steph and diana both amazing. Diana put more acting into this while performing live, and steph did more vocal gymnastics, bigger range than Diana but Diana has a tone that is amazing on her money notes, harmonic and unusual. One of a kind.

this is miss ross at the peak of her vocal powers—so fragile even when she whispers, so chilling when she sings to the person in very last row of her concert hall. i can't get enough of this video and miss ross's version of home. i'm glad glee is doing her songs (she should appear on an episode!); it means her talent lives on and miss ross's songs will be discovered by another generation of music lovers.

I absolutely loved Diana in the wiz and since she played in the motion picture next to other great legends this song to me is hers. I know other artist have sung it and probably better but Diana owns. cus she had the perfect emotion right along with it in the movie.

I love Diana, but if you listen to Whitney singing this song, man, Whitney gives every word in the song a meaning, she sings every word as if it is precious, Whitney bring every word, every note alive in each song she sings, she brings a sparkle to every word and note, unlike any other singer I know, even Diana (I do not mean it bad, I do love Diana too. This here is not the best version but I have notyet seen someone sing this better then Diana herself. Melissa Moultrie does it quiet well considering her age.

@houyee76 No she didn't. Stephanie Mills was Dorothy in the broadway version of the wiz around '75. The Movie with Diana and Michael was made in like '79 based on the broadway version. So Stephanie was the first to sing that song. In '89 Stephanie RErecorded the hit for an album but it was originally hers. :)

@MJBKfan4ever all depends on what style of singing you prefer whitney's voice was more powerful, diana's to me was prettier and more versatile when she really wanted to sing. whitney had the black gospel singing style & that was her thing, diana's voice was more suited for pop/ r&b & even jazz/blues. diana has a role in shaping american culture in a way whitney never can surpass. you'd have to go back and look at diana's career historically to understand what I mean.

this is miss ross at the peak of her vocal powers—so fragile even when she whispers, so chilling when she sings to the person in very last row of her concert hall. i can't get enough of this video and miss ross's version of home. i'm glad glee is doing her songs (she should appear on an episode!); it means her talent lives on and miss ross's songs will be discovered by another generation of music lovers.

There are instances of different WHITE stars doing the Movie Wizard of Oz in a play/live; yet white people are not bashing/comparing their STARS. Actually it's not YOUR song, Diana. It's Stephanie Mills song from the original play THE WIZ. Diana Ross and Michael Jackson did the movie version some years later. So don't take credit Diana like it was YOUR song. Give proper PROPS to Stephanie Mills. Thank you.

I love Diana, but if you listen to Whitney singing this song, man, Whitney gives every word in the song a meaning, she sings every word as if it is precious, Whitney bring every word, every note alive in each song she sings, she brings a sparkle to every word and note, unlike any other singer I know, even Diana (I do not mean it bad, I do love Diana too. But Whitney just has that magic, I don't know....If you agree give me a tumbs up.

@Questionoflove I disagree. Whitney is a superior singer normally, but for me Diana brought out more of the meaning of the lyrics. Especially in the film. Whitney was just "singing" it in a gorgeous voice.

I guess it has to do with perception as I feel exactly the oposite. I could never listen to Whitney as to me whitney is only a technical singer with no real heart in it. This here is not the best version but I have notyet seen someone sing this better then Diana herself. Melissa Moultrie does it quiet well considering her age.

I've noticed diana is getting a lot more positive comments on her videos..there was a time a few yrs ago when people were attacking her on every video saying she couldn't sing.. etc.. glad those fools have moved on and diana is becoming really popular again or people are recognizing what an amazing talent she is.

@houyee76 No she didn't. Stephanie Mills was Dorothy in the broadway version of the wiz around '75. The Movie with Diana and Michael was made in like '79 based on the broadway version. So Stephanie was the first to sing that song. In '89 Stephanie RErecorded the hit for an album but it was originally hers. :)

@sista005 Stephanie Mills was the original Dorothy in The Wiz. Her version won 7 Tony Awards and the Grammy Award for Best Original Cast Album. Because of the show's success, they decided to make it into a movie in 1978, but since they changed so much of what made the original successful, the movie flopped at the box office and lost money. @MJBKfan4ever all depends on what style of singing you prefer whitney's voice was more powerful, diana's to me was prettier and more versatile when she really wanted to sing. whitney had the black gospel singing style & that was her thing, diana's voice was more suited for pop/ r&b & even jazz/blues. diana has a role in shaping american culture in a way whitney never can surpass. you'd have to go back and look at diana's career historically to understand what I mean.

One of the things unique about diana is she is one black woman who chose not too sing black gospel style.. that's what distinguished her from aretha, gladys, patti, and just about all the other black female singers in her era. there are other kinds of music besides gospel.

I hope you post about how the show was in May... she's 66 yrs old now so it's doubtful that she'll be at the level of excellence and pizazz that she's showing here on these clips. Will be interested in hearing your take on her current show. she's been getting great reviews for her shows over the last couple of yrs.

Nobody seem to bother about whom other female singers have slept with. There are very few virgins who perform in this world. There are even fewer monogamous entaertainers. Many of you who are criticizing Diana's life could not stand for your lives to be scrutinized. It is the age old story where we need to take the moat out of our eyes before we take the speck out of Diana's. Diana's voice is sweet, beautiful and recognizable. Many louder voices have been forgotten, lost in the crowd.

@alcidedavidson Let's get something straight. You have your opinion and I have mine. I believe that the only reason she got ahead was because she was fucking Berry. The story of Dreamgirls IS the story of The Supremes. She wasn't the original lead, but after Berry hit, she was. Period. It wasn't solely based off her talent. And many famous black female singers have strong voices and won't be forgotten. To name a few: Aretha, Patti, Tina, Gladys, Chaka, and Etta.

yes i agree with you about powerful voices.But diana had a quality to her voice that none of them could copy. The Black girl with the raspy loud voice geets played out sometimes.Dianas voice is MAGIC and thats y shes legendary.On another note...i just saw stephanie mills sing live in Georgia...it was AWFUL...i was so upset cause i love her.Another thing,Diana instilled emotion into her voice an songs...and thats hard to do
