Interesting video, thanks for posting! Maybe if you get back there, take a photo of the profile compared to worn out track, and we'll see if that Napa cop was telling the truth! I guess ideally when the profile is right on straight track the contact area between the wheels and rail is very small?
We passed this rail grinder at West Reno yesterday (11/27/10) on #5. We got bogged down inside the shed at West Norden and had to clear ice/snow off the engines brake pads before we could proceed. It was kinda fun but I got really dirty!
@hoorider13 WOW!!!!!! Yeah the Amtrak guys that worked the Zephyr from Winnemucca to Reno they said they saw this rail grinder doing lots of work around Vista, Nv.
Amazing that you got bogged down inside of the snow shed.
@CoastStarlight11 Ya, we rolled into Truckee ok but as soon as we started up above Donner Lake, the engineer reported the brakes were really sluggish so we had to stop and inspect the train. It was a really good exercise but my uniform got incredibly dirty!
@Lightwolf333 Yep. This was the very first time ever shot a rail grinder in action, major historical footage right here since this was my first rail grinder.
That's got to be a delicate job in those surroundings. They already have to be vigilant to keep from setting off lineside fires; I'll bet they really have to step it up when they're surrounded by open grassy/brushy space like that.
@FastFlyingVirginian Yeah the Nevada desert is desolate. One thing also crossed my mind. I wonder how these rail grinders keep from setting off hot box detectors, or do they set off hot box detectors? You would think with those fires and all that heat they would set off hot box detectors but who knows.
@CoastStarlight11 They probably do set them off, but I would think the right people would be in the know of the grinder's whereabouts at the time one went off, and so they would know to ignore it.
@UnionPacific18 Thanks!!! I got a new job and have been super busy putting in insane hours so I have not had much time for railfanning and video uploading.
@CoastStarlight11 Just tell them that your railfanning is all part of your 'personal program for fostering employee wellness'. They'll eat it up, I guarantee.
@xxxDeath9572xxx Thanks!!! I had no time to get to the sunny side of the tracks. Plus if you stand on the sunny side of the tracks all the trees and stuff are in the way. You can see the town much better on the shadow side of the tracks.
cool!
