  • The problem with this analysis is that it tests the accuracy of the reported mass of a serving rather than the calories per unit mass. These companies don't have any incentive to give you extra food. You need to test whether the calories per serving is being reported honestly, not the weight of a serving. A scale won't tell you how many calories you're consuming if they aren't honestly reporting the calories per gram served, which is where they're most likely to be deceitful.

  • The importance of knowing serving size (SS) is that often times people either greatly overestimate how much constitutes an accurate SS or food manufacturers deceptively label rediculously low amounts as a serving (i.e. 1 Serving=.5 oz.). After accurately knowing how much a serving is you can then find out the caloric content of said food via a number of books or websites.

  • I've been training people for ten years and I know one thing to be absolutely true: Weight loss is about 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. You can kill yourself on a treadmill for an hour a day to lose weight but the weight will come back. The only way to keep it off is by putting most of the focus on the diet.

  • PS. You can consume "more" and lose weight. But make sure it's protein -meats, fish, eggs, dairy, whey protein shakes, etc. along with lots of vegetables. Substitute soda with water or flavored water. And NEVER eat processed food that comes packaged in a box or bag.

  • All this counting calorie stuff can get thrown out the window if people eat lots of good protein from various sources, good fats and cut down their carbs to 100-200 grams per day. Veggies should be part of at least two meals a day and no carbs at all after 3-4 p.m. except for veggies/salads. Grains/sugary carbs should only be consumed in the mornings or to fuel heavy physical activity. This way you're guaranteed to lose weight without scales which nobody would do anyway.

  • The 20% variation is 400! You are correct, but it could also be 200 calories below 2000, so if you think you are eating 2000 calories you may be eating 1800-2200 without knowing it...

  • Yes, but I'm just the kind of person who likes to be as accurate as possible. Some bagels ARE a bit bigger than others, and apples are ALWAYS different sizes, so I can't be accurate unless I have a fancy scale like that girl in the video, and even then you never know!.... I'm just crazy like that. So I stick to my own diet and try to eat as close to natural as possible.

    @kinggzz: What's wrong with measuring and weighing your food? :/ If you don't then all you're doing is wrongly estimating your caloric intake. You could be off by hundreds, and when you find out the truth you'll just feel incredibly stupid.

    I measure out my food and estimate a hundred or so above, just in case.

    When you say Trail mix is hard to measure.... too true...there are different things in there that weigh differently... so you'd have to find the proper ratio of things to measure as per the actual trail mix ... mix... lol.
