No offence intented to the driver of this video but he is making it look alot harding than it actually is. i own a b61 with a quad box and both me and my father shift both sticks with one hand at the same time. its so much easier
I'm not trying to dish those old behemoth trucks, but face the facts, the technology is obsolete otherwise even new trucks would have double, triple or quad sticks. And about truckers knowing how to drive.. I think its better to let the truck do the shifting, and letting the driver concentrate on the road ahead...
maybe yes, maybe no. i do like the autoshift myself, BUT htey scare me sometimes, while going downhill, also more stuff to break too, well maybe more electronic controls and stuff. is what im trying to say. anyhoo drive safe
Its a proven fact that people who drive standard are better drivers. This is because you need to pay attention to everything going on around you to be able to drive! That old tech may be "obsolete" but it sure is cool and still gets the job done just as well today!
Shifting beccomes second nature. It doesn't distract from the road. A driver that knows how to use a twin stick is more than likely to be the most experienced driver in a fleet.
dude they will never have automatic trucks that will overtake sticks. its too unefficient or however you spell it. truck drivers know what gear and rpm to be in for minimal fuel usage and for going up hills. get yoru facts straight man these guys are trained
I saw it once.. and nothing special,. 2 ( or 3 ) axle truck transporting logs on a dirt road... absolutely nothing special about it.. not even a cab view..
well, I know I'm gonna get hit with everything you old truckers have, but, this guy is spending more time shifting than steering the truck. Why was it necessary to have so many gears? the space between gears is so short it seems he could shift every second or third gear.
It's simple really. The more speeds, the less space between gears, the less space between gears, the easier the engine can climb RPM's, the easier the engine can climb RPM's the less strain on it. This is especially important on a diesel that doesn't make much torque above 2000 or so RPM. On a gas engine you can just let it scream then shift it because the power curve doesn't flatten out at high RPM as much as a diesel.
It's easy all you are doing is splitting the main box with the aux, the aux is an "n" pattern, and we seldom used 1st and 1st unles I was loaded heavy from a dead stop uphill. mostly used 2nd and 2nd and 2nd an 3rd and 2nd and 4th loaded. and shift the main 3x and finish with the brownie to get to 4th and 4th. used these for many years in the mountains of Idaho, Oregon and the rest of the NW. simple and fun.
The differance between Truck Drivers and Wheel Holders is how you shift your truck. Anybody can drive a airshift. Volvo even has a 12 spd automatic. Be a MAN and drive a tri stick or like in this video, a twin stick. That is how you learn to drive a truck.
Much respect to you but I only saw up shifting. And you must have bein in lite traffic. The Frieghtliner I run is an air shift 10 speed. To get around traffic and the mountain roads, You have got to nail your shifts like that just 2x faster. I love down shifting with the jake on. Peace
Awsome shifting!!! To me that looks like a pain in the ass to drive. Mabie if you drive it every day you don't mind, I'll take a airshift any day. I'd love to have something like that to show but not my everyday driver.
Man, does this bring back some memories! Although I never drove any, I rode shotgun in several for the the highway contractor (Mashuda Corp, Evans City, PA USA) I worked for. The driver was an expert on the B-61's and putting the arm through the wheel and shifting with two hands was THE WAY it was and still is done. We hauled CAT 773's on a low boy behind those machines. Those trucks would pull anything you put behind 'em. I'm gonna get one the first chance I get!

While I find this guy amazing, and pretty cool.. Why is that? Is it because in overdrive the trans is essentially under greater load and if you try and use the compound box too it just gets overloaded as well? Sorry not quite upto scratch on these matters
Mack did make a truck with 5-6 gears. I think it was because of the engine design. I think they called it the Maxidyne or something like that. It had to do with the engines torque. I remember reading something like that in Diesel Power.
Are you talking about the 5 speed plus low range Maxi-Torque transmission? Company I used to work for had one in an RD688S mated to a 300 horse motor running a quad axle. I only drove it a couple times.. never got too comfortable with it, as my normal truck I drove had an 8LL.
I can imagine how weird it would be to drive something with only five gears. I'm personally used to 18. I noticed that they almost always pair either a low power engine with a trans with a lot of gears. Or a high power engine with less gears.
Alot is determined by the powerband of the engine. Mack made quite a few torque rise engines that only required 5-6 gears, rated at 300+ hp. They would pull from 1100 rpm to 2100 rpm. Older engines would only pull from 1500-2100. Much narrower band, requiring more gears.
I drove for 12 years(schneider) I got to drive one of these once. I loved it!! I can no longer drive I had a seizure about 10 months ago, now I cant drive for 10 years according to the DOT. Thats if i dont have any more seizures. good job on the shifting!
I'm sorry to see that you had a seizure, i know how you feel, they royally suck ass particularly when it comes to a carrier like this here, i would almost do anything to get rid of my epilepsy so i can try and at least get a CDL, but good luck to you, i hope you clear this up.
Thanks for the post of this, when I was younger my Dad used to drive an old International Dump truck with the two gear shifts, brings back some memories of me being glued to his hands as he did it. steven
Oh, going through about twelve or fifteen to sixteen or twenty gears.
"
When they sent me out with one of the older guys to learn how to drive it, I was really jazzed (hey...I was 19) He looked at me and said, "It ain't no f**kin' honor, kid". LOL! "
Double LOL! I thought somewhere along the way ya hadda be least 21.
Ha, ha! I learned to drive wheeler in a B61 with a quad box. (36 years ago) Beautiful paint but the inside of the cab was a horror show. No floor mats so my feet roasted waiting in the pit. When they sent me out with one of the older guys to learn how to drive it, I was really jazzed (hey...I was 19) He looked at me and said, "It ain't no f**kin' honor, kid". LOL!
Watching this sure brought back some memories. I drove B-81 and B-83 (Cummins 220 motor) tandem dump trucks when I started driving in the sixties. It was cool to learn how to run and shift those trucks, but after an 11 or 12 hour day I was happy to jump into my car with an automatic! I do remember that you learned how to downshift on a long hill with a Quadraplx, because if you missed a gear you were pulling over and starting all over again....after doing that a few times you learned quickly!
Phew..no one should work a vehicle that needs constantly two hands to change a gear. And a non-synchro box? When I die, they'll probably put me behind the wheel of one like this. Oh how I wish I had taken a video of my old works Renault G260 with an 18-speed box. Easiest, though clumsiest vehicle to work with.
hey mate have you ever heard of blokes (guys) bending the gear sticks in these? a mate of our family taught me how to drive and he told me they used to bend them so it was esier and pretty much opperate the gears with one hand.
@59Mack ; What engine was in your 59 mack? Just curious. I think dad's 59 kw had a 185 cummins, with straight pipes. pretty loud climbing hills. A long ways from today's 525 cat
@cowboyblue55 It still has the original 673 Mack(normally aspirated), 180 hp(give or take). It has a small muffler under the cab and twin pipes. Pretty loud and yes, far from todays power!
wow. that's pretty impressive. i use to hear the old heads talk about these tran's, but i had no idea of what they were talking about .wow!!!! is that normal driving, cause it looked like you were hotdogginit. damn fine show!
i had noticed this. Ihad actually made a effort to count the gears and thats when i realized it was a 5x3. Cool truck regardless. Do you still haul with the truck, or is it more of a keepsake?
I thought it was a 4x4, since no one uses the 1st gear which make it look like a three speed .Dont hit any pot holes! You got it down pretty good, dont forget to turn left!
Uncle Welda is more than a driver, he'z a truck freak, a mutant trucker, clutch who needs a clutch??? I like using my Jakes when I up-shift, faster, smoother, better...unless you're a dingaling. All the guyz I've driven with do the same, even my Daddy who raised me from 4 yrs old in trucks.
Ah yes, truck porn. I love it. Now that's a skill and a talent few posses today. Good job, and to think they used to do this all the time. Now, were's that sodie bottle I've got to pee.
The max rpm of a typical diesel engine is 2100 rpm. Unlike a car engine that can run up to 5500+ rpm. Thus you need alot of gears to be able to get up to speed. Most gear changes are only about 400 drop in rpm.
So it's a quad box not a tri-plex ? It's been 20 years so I was not sure but I thought the QUAD was a H pattern and HIGH was bottom right. Anyway I sure would love to drive one again once in a while. You can drive that with manual steering u can drive anything. Mine used to freeze up and I would have to get out with a crowbar and pry on it!
Why does that not seem like a quad box. It seems he is shifting from LO to HIGH, then DIRECT. Instead of DIRECT then HIGH. Of course LO-LO is not used except in the mud for reverse and 1st only. Could this be a triplex ?
when I first started we ran Chev tandems 427 gas motors and 5+4 trans about the same horsepower as the 711 half the torque if them sticks had of been knitting needles I would have Knit alot of socks the gas engine was easier to drive more RPM's to work with. The guy in the video knows his stuff I was never much into the arm through the wheel stuff just every now and then on a down shift just to prove I could, thanks for the memories
I guess the closest you'd come to a quad box these days is a 14 speed Spicer with 5 gears on the main and 4 speed air-shift, which makes it a helluva lot easier doing a compound change. But even then, most people look at that blue Spicer gearshift knob and don't want to know. They'd be stuffed with twin sticks. We've sure come a long way over the years with big power, comfortable trucks, and now autos.
That guy is a pro, he makes it look easy. I just drive once in awhile for fun and got pretty flawless on the flats but the hills can be hard especially when it's dark you have to just guess how much the truck will speed up or slow down in the time you take to shift. Sometimes you're forced to skip gears. I don't know why people start hollering at me when I say I like automatics, not that I can't shift it's just laborious :-)
I used to drive an old R-Model Mack with the 5& 2,but my uncle used to Drive for Dufferin Concrete and drove a B-Model with a 5 & 4.
Love Reverse Low...it was so slow i figure I could put t in gear at full revves, get out of the truck and go the washroom and i bet that dam thing would hve moved 10 feet...Great memories..Thanks.
The reason why there are so much confusion on how to shift a two stick transmission is because there are so many differnt combinations. I have had a Triplex and Quadplex, which are married transmissions and I have had a Mack 5 speed with a Spicer 4 speed behind it. I have also had a Roadranger 10 spead with a Spicer 4 speed behind it. What I'm trying to say is back in the day, with low horsepower and low torque, we would try anything to get the load over the next hill.
my father had one of those and he used to travel to the rural places of nicaragua going uphill, downhill on dirtroads through rivers mudd with a load trailer and that's what i call skills
well he used to transport all kind of cargo all over the country (nicaragua) i was a kid back then but i have very fresh memories of him transporting bulldozers,d-10 and all kind of construction machinery and when the truck was stuked they used the d-10 to get it out it was very impresive there is where you put a truck to the test and see the tremendus power it is unbelibeable.
Hey man, you do what you gotta do, when you gotta do it. You wanna see some truck torture in tropical jungles, type in "Volvo Logging truck Sumatra" in the search on Youtube, and watch that video. Thats where you see the shit get separated from the real deal. Thats a cool story. thanks for sharing. Have a great 2008. Check out my videos when you get a chance
about 10 years ago I worked up in Bute Inlet , BC canada at a logging camp and the off-highway lowbed they had moving the road crew equipment was a 1974 Hayes HD that was converted to a Cat 3406 Natural with a 4 speed auxilary and a Fuller 18 speed main. That truck had so much reduction. Unbelieveable. Took a while to get to 40 km/h though :P Cpuld move a D8K Cat like fuckall though, especially on all-axle lockup
Jeez talk about a stick shift! Man you are old school. They are starting to build semi-trucks with automatics now. Such a shame! We dont want old grannies or ditzy teenage girls behind the wheels of big rigs do we? Yeah id like to see one of those pretty boys that call themselves truckers drive this!

Are you talking about the 5 speed plus low range Maxi-Torque transmission? Company I used to work for had one in an RD688S mated to a 300 horse motor running a quad axle. I only drove it a couple times.. never got too comfortable with it, as my normal truck I drove had an 8LL.
BurningSaviour 3 years ago
I can imagine how weird it would be to drive something with only five gears. I'm personally used to 18. I noticed that they almost always pair either a low power engine with a trans with a lot of gears. Or a high power engine with less gears.
Xobunoli 2 years ago
Alot is determined by the powerband of the engine. Mack made quite a few torque rise engines that only required 5-6 gears, rated at 300+ hp. They would pull from 1100 rpm to 2100 rpm. Older engines would only pull from 1500-2100. Much narrower band, requiring more gears.

I drove for 12 years(schneider) I got to drive one of these once. I loved it!! I can no longer drive I had a seizure about 10 months ago, now I cant drive for 10 years according to the DOT. Thats if i dont have any more seizures. good job on the shifting!
ktumbleweed 3 years ago
I'm sorry to see that you had a seizure, i know how you feel, they royally suck ass particularly when it comes to a carrier like this here, i would almost do anything to get rid of my epilepsy so i can try and at least get a CDL, but good luck to you, i hope you clear this up.

LOL!

You have some serious skills man!!! Damn good shift work. I haven't seen someone work a quad box since I was a kid. Kick ass job!!!
Bikerbro2007 3 years ago 2
Watching this sure brought back some memories. I drove B-81 and B-83 (Cummins 220 motor) tandem dump trucks when I started driving in the sixties. It was cool to learn how to run and shift those trucks, but after an 11 or 12 hour day I was happy to jump into my car with an automatic! I do remember that you learned how to downshift on a long hill with a Quadraplx, because if you missed a gear you were pulling over and starting all over again....after doing that a few times you learned quickly!
trainwayne 3 years ago
you can make that mack hum good good job from an old timer
seashull 3 years ago
Phew..no one should work a vehicle that needs constantly two hands to change a gear. And a non-synchro box? When I die, they'll probably put me behind the wheel of one like this. Oh how I wish I had taken a video of my old works Renault G260 with an 18-speed box. Easiest, though clumsiest vehicle to work with.

@59Mack ; What engine was in your 59 mack? Just curious. I think dad's 59 kw had a 185 cummins, with straight pipes. pretty loud climbing hills. A long ways from today's 525 cat
cowboyblue55 1 year ago
@cowboyblue55 It still has the original 673 Mack(normally aspirated), 180 hp(give or take). It has a small muffler under the cab and twin pipes. Pretty loud and yes, far from todays power!

wow. that's pretty impressive. i use to hear the old heads talk about these tran's, but i had no idea of what they were talking about .wow!!!! is that normal driving, cause it looked like you were hotdogginit. damn fine show!

5x3

i had noticed this. Ihad actually made a effort to count the gears and thats when i realized it was a 5x3. Cool truck regardless. Do you still haul with the truck, or is it more of a keepsake?

Duplex is 5x2(10 spd), Triplex is 5x3(15 spd), Quad is 5x4(20 spd).
This truck is a 5x3(15 spd)
59Mack 3 years ago 2
I thought it was a 4x4, since no one uses the 1st gear which make it look like a three speed .Dont hit any pot holes! You got it down pretty good, dont forget to turn left!

The proper name from Mack is RQ720 Quadruplex,
Uncle Welda is more than a driver, he'z a truck freak, a mutant trucker, clutch who needs a clutch??? I like using my Jakes when I up-shift, faster, smoother, better...unless you're a dingaling. All the guyz I've driven with do the same, even my Daddy who raised me from 4 yrs old in trucks.

why so many gears on semi-trucks?
CamaroTBI 3 years ago
The max rpm of a typical diesel engine is 2100 rpm. Unlike a car engine that can run up to 5500+ rpm. Thus you need alot of gears to be able to get up to speed. Most gear changes are only about 400 drop in rpm.
59Mack 3 years ago
oh ok thanks

So it's a quad box not a tri-plex ? It's been 20 years so I was not sure but I thought the QUAD was a H pattern and HIGH was bottom right. Anyway I sure would love to drive one again once in a while. You can drive that with manual steering u can drive anything. Mine used to freeze up and I would have to get out with a crowbar and pry on it!
edcardinal 3 years ago
"HIGH is bottom right..." It depends on the gearing (overdrive/Low) pattern and model...
SteveCarras 3 years ago
Why does that not seem like a quad box. It seems he is shifting from LO to HIGH, then DIRECT. Instead of DIRECT then HIGH. Of course LO-LO is not used except in the mud for reverse and 1st only. Could this be a triplex ?
edcardinal 3 years ago
lo to direct in most of them was a U pattern with the direct in rear right, low in the left rear

when I first started we ran Chev tandems 427 gas motors and 5+4 trans about the same horsepower as the 711 half the torque if them sticks had of been knitting needles I would have Knit alot of socks the gas engine was easier to drive more RPM's to work with. The guy in the video knows his stuff I was never much into the arm through the wheel stuff just every now and then on a down shift just to prove I could, thanks for the memories
jonesjco 4 years ago
I guess the closest you'd come to a quad box these days is a 14 speed Spicer with 5 gears on the main and 4 speed air-shift, which makes it a helluva lot easier doing a compound change. But even then, most people look at that blue Spicer gearshift knob and don't want to know. They'd be stuffed with twin sticks. We've sure come a long way over the years with big power, comfortable trucks, and now autos.

minidakota318 4 years ago
That guy is a pro, he makes it look easy. I just drive once in awhile for fun and got pretty flawless on the flats but the hills can be hard especially when it's dark you have to just guess how much the truck will speed up or slow down in the time you take to shift. Sometimes you're forced to skip gears. I don't know why people start hollering at me when I say I like automatics, not that I can't shift it's just laborious :-)
castirondude 4 years ago

Looks like a video game, ill stick with 3-6 speed trannys
Fastazzhe11 4 years ago
The reason why there are so much confusion on how to shift a two stick transmission is because there are so many differnt combinations. I have had a Triplex and Quadplex, which are married transmissions and I have had a Mack 5 speed with a Spicer 4 speed behind it. I have also had a Roadranger 10 spead with a Spicer 4 speed behind it. What I'm trying to say is back in the day, with low horsepower and low torque, we would try anything to get the load over the next hill.

well he used to transport all kind of cargo all over the country (nicaragua) i was a kid back then but i have very fresh memories of him transporting bulldozers,d-10 and all kind of construction machinery and when the truck was stuked they used the d-10 to get it out it was very impresive there is where you put a truck to the test and see the tremendus power it is unbelibeable.

about 10 years ago I worked up in Bute Inlet , BC canada at a logging camp and the off-highway lowbed they had moving the road crew equipment was a 1974 Hayes HD that was converted to a Cat 3406 Natural with a 4 speed auxilary and a Fuller 18 speed main.
