  • whoever flagged this video needs to have their account deleted. I mean seriously!! What is it about this video that makes it age-restricted?

  • Anyone going for their road ranger licence should stop fearing the box and start fearing this. I didn't spell licence wrong, you're just American.

  • A top Operator. My late Dad drove a H model one of two in Australia and he was the same. Get it right and more important don't break the gear. Nobody makes any money when its' sitting on the side of the road.

  • It had to be a Jackass Catnut, someone who knows nothing about quadraplexes.

  • use to drive an old 1967 international with a quad box drove it the same way that was like 24 years ago but did get you some attention when some older drivers saw a young kid driving that thing

  • Who the fuck flagged this video? Some automatic transmission pansy?

  • @caterpillarnut

    Most likely.

  • Anybody got any opinions about the Renault B18 box? I used to love it. On light load start on 8th, then straight over to 12th, then over to 14th - in city conditions the occasional splits. On a freeway, 14 >16, then a split ->17, then 18 and 115 kph up. Oh I loved her!

  • thats the way it was back in the day my dad had to do it

  • thanks that is some of the finest triplex shifting i have seen in a long time

  • look at all these comment GET INTO THE 21ST CENTURY PEOPLE DRIVING IS NO LONGER A BALL AKE AND I FOR ONE SAY THANKYOU GOD.

  • someone sell me a truck with a quad box tranny in it im 27 and facinated with them , any moron can drive a single stick, back in the day a quad box was what made a man a man that and no power steering

  • @smokey213964 Your 27 when the ink is dry on your licence you can preach to me my friend .I have skidded further than you've driven PRE A.B.S of course.

  • @smokey213964

    You said it.

  • Anyone remember 318 yamaha's with a 5 and 4, 2000 rpm split? 5" straight pipes and loud useless jake?

  • I wish they had two stick trucks today maybe that would get rid of some of the drivers of today that don't have a clue how to drive they the trucks idiot proof today automatic everything any jackass that needs a job can drive a truck and it shows with the quality of drivers on the road.We need more truckers that have a love and passion for their job that's where the skill and profesional comes from not more drivers like were getting today .

  • @900LKENWORTH

Good point! Many drivers have put a seocnd transmission w/stick behind a roadranger [the more low reduction and the more gears to shift].

  • No offence intented to the driver of this video but he is making it look alot harding than it actually is. i own a b61 with a quad box and both me and my father shift both sticks with one hand at the same time. its so much easier

  • Triplex.

  • I'm not trying to dish those old behemoth trucks, but face the facts, the technology is obsolete otherwise even new trucks would have double, triple or quad sticks. And about truckers knowing how to drive.. I think its better to let the truck do the shifting, and letting the driver concentrate on the road ahead...

    safe driving...

  • maybe yes, maybe no. i do like the autoshift myself, BUT htey scare me sometimes, while going downhill, also more stuff to break too, well maybe more electronic controls and stuff. is what im trying to say. anyhoo drive safe

  • Its a proven fact that people who drive standard are better drivers. This is because you need to pay attention to everything going on around you to be able to drive! That old tech may be "obsolete" but it sure is cool and still gets the job done just as well today!

  • Shifting beccomes second nature. It doesn't distract from the road. A driver that knows how to use a twin stick is more than likely to be the most experienced driver in a fleet.

  • @1BEAVIS13

    Good point. Very good point.

  • dude they will never have automatic trucks that will overtake sticks. its too unefficient or however you spell it. truck drivers know what gear and rpm to be in for minimal fuel usage and for going up hills. get yoru facts straight man these guys are trained

  • @creborn

    Someone mentioned

    Volvo Logging truck Sumatra"

    Does anyone have the video?

  • @SteveCarras

I saw it once.. and nothing special,. 2 ( or 3 ) axle truck transporting logs on a dirt road... absolutely nothing special about it.. not even a cab view..

  • well, I know I'm gonna get hit with everything you old truckers have, but, this guy is spending more time shifting than steering the truck. Why was it necessary to have so many gears? the space between gears is so short it seems he could shift every second or third gear.

  • @creborn

It's simple really. The more speeds, the less space between gears, the less space between gears, the easier the engine can climb RPM's, the easier the engine can climb RPM's the less strain on it. This is especially important on a diesel that doesn't make much torque above 2000 or so RPM. On a gas engine you can just let it scream then shift it because the power curve doesn't flatten out at high RPM as much as a diesel.

    Hope this helps!

  • @UprightsRule895

I know all that, but I'm just saying that the technology is obsolete.

  • Why in the hell does my swivel chair tip to the left ever time you change a gear? My head is getting tierd of hitting the wall.

  • Comment removed

  • It's easy all you are doing is splitting the main box with the aux, the aux is an "n" pattern, and we seldom used 1st and 1st unles I was loaded heavy from a dead stop uphill. mostly used 2nd and 2nd and 2nd an 3rd and 2nd and 4th loaded. and shift the main 3x and finish with the brownie to get to 4th and 4th. used these for many years in the mountains of Idaho, Oregon and the rest of the NW. simple and fun.

  • The differance between Truck Drivers and Wheel Holders is how you shift your truck. Anybody can drive a airshift. Volvo even has a 12 spd automatic. Be a MAN and drive a tri stick or like in this video, a twin stick. That is how you learn to drive a truck.

  • Good point. The fine art seems to be lost..

  • is that nescesary?

  • just imagine if one of todays truckers climbed into this beast. theyd be so lost suicide may come into play

  • Much respect to you but I only saw up shifting. And you must have bein in lite traffic. The Frieghtliner I run is an air shift 10 speed. To get around traffic and the mountain roads, You have got to nail your shifts like that just 2x faster. I love down shifting with the jake on. Peace

  • Kinda hard to downshift when I'm only running around town. Not enough time to work two sticks and actually stop too.

  • CLASSIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awsome shifting!!! To me that looks like a pain in the ass to drive. Mabie if you drive it every day you don't mind, I'll take a airshift any day. I'd love to have something like that to show but not my everyday driver.

  • god now this takes talent lol cant learn this in a week lol

  • Man, does this bring back some memories! Although I never drove any, I rode shotgun in several for the the highway contractor (Mashuda Corp, Evans City, PA USA) I worked for. The driver was an expert on the B-61's and putting the arm through the wheel and shifting with two hands was THE WAY it was and still is done. We hauled CAT 773's on a low boy behind those machines. Those trucks would pull anything you put behind 'em. I'm gonna get one the first chance I get!

  • uncle of mine had a b model Mack , could shift with two or from what dad told me he could use two , bloody queensland legand , over a million miles on the old girl ,

  • Wow, memories. I got pretty good with the Quad box on an old DM800.

The worst is when the shifters would bind and you had to crawl under the rig to knock it back in neutral.

  • damn no power steering is the utilmate work out

  • who uses two hands

  • 98% of the old timers shifted with 2 hands, because you gotta be quick. So you just rap your left arm threw and go. Its the way i was thought and many others. gotta remember trucks back then had strong arm steering (no power steering)

  • The steering on those older heavy trucks is very stiff. So, they dont swerve when you let go like newer power assists do.

  • @CidHighwindFF7

That's because there IS no power steering on those, no more than autos!

Guess what? They are putting old transit-style Allison VS-2 series 1967-1970 automatic transmissions in ALL trucks now...just F N R.:)

    [do you THINK I'm serious?:-)]

  • great video on the old 4x4. drove a acar in the oil fields that had a 13spd with the 4spd brownie behind it. has 300,000 gross on it and it never wavered in double lowwhen it took off.

  • "Crazy4diesels (1 year ago) Show Hide +1 Marked as spam Reply | Spam A lost art from back when you really had to drive a truck - not just operate it! "

AnNd you were a MAN if you knew how to shift gears, and double cluch, too, PARTICULAR a twin stick one--and any gears at all on buses., which almost never had "two" sticks.

  • Man...that is old school!:) [As someone else said.]

  • Them old mack thermodyne engines are music to my ears

  • Mattster2k6 sayeth:

"Because trucks need many gear ratios because they are larger and carry loads and 4-6speeds like cars have just isn't enough to get it moving from a stop. "

He's referring to rigs, naturally. THE [cap intended] old highway, once dominant GMC, buses are basically the same size/length as Class 6-8 everage big rig, ut only need & have 4-speeds and a few other bus makers had 5, (some of the old Crowns are another matter. ). [Referring to the manaul trannies, not autos, natch]

  • Weazell:

Back in the days tow sticks was high tech cutting edge.:)

    Xobunoli & BunringSaviour:

Mack had a 6 speed that is a 4 speed but a Low Low and Rev. both two-ranged..

  • I would cry if I had to deal with that every day

  • i shift a twin stick just fine without using both hands....wats the purpose of that?

  • While I find this guy amazing, and pretty cool.. I think i will keep my Eaton Super 10 thanks you very much :) only 5 gears to shift thru, and the last two it does automatically since its a lightning series... not putting the old school stuff down.. just would not want to deal with that day in and day out...love the coordination thou.. this guy has talent for sure.

  • Wat rührt der alle man inne gänge rum

  • The last thing I need is a Hanna-Montana type with a pink cellphone behind the wheels of an automatic transmissioned big rig!

  • twin-sticks and toothpicks!!!

  • this is insane.

  • the funny thing is he split fifth gear

i wonder how long he expects his quad to last

number one rule in a quad box... splitting fifth gear is a big nono

  • yes but this is a triplex

  • no its a quadbox read the title.

  • the title is wrong my young friend ask 59mack as this is is truck and I happen to have one of his videos posted here as well.

  • Why is that? Is it because in overdrive the trans is essentially under greater load and if you try and use the compound box too it just gets overloaded as well? Sorry not quite upto scratch on these matters

  • BTW re:automatics in trucks...I think many bus drivers hated automatics i their 1950s transit buses and many years later in intericty ones.:)

  • I had only driven a 3 speed in my life and I got stuck with a 10 speed, it was a ruff day but I figured it out.

  • Comment removed

  • Mack did make a truck with 5-6 gears. I think it was because of the engine design. I think they called it the Maxidyne or something like that. It had to do with the engines torque. I remember reading something like that in Diesel Power.

  • Are you talking about the 5 speed plus low range Maxi-Torque transmission? Company I used to work for had one in an RD688S mated to a 300 horse motor running a quad axle. I only drove it a couple times.. never got too comfortable with it, as my normal truck I drove had an 8LL.

  • I can imagine how weird it would be to drive something with only five gears. I'm personally used to 18. I noticed that they almost always pair either a low power engine with a trans with a lot of gears. Or a high power engine with less gears.

  • Alot is determined by the powerband of the engine. Mack made quite a few torque rise engines that only required 5-6 gears, rated at 300+ hp. They would pull from 1100 rpm to 2100 rpm. Older engines would only pull from 1500-2100. Much narrower band, requiring more gears.

  • I drove for 12 years(schneider) I got to drive one of these once. I loved it!! I can no longer drive I had a seizure about 10 months ago, now I cant drive for 10 years according to the DOT. Thats if i dont have any more seizures. good job on the shifting!

  • I'm sorry to see that you had a seizure, i know how you feel, they royally suck ass particularly when it comes to a carrier like this here, i would almost do anything to get rid of my epilepsy so i can try and at least get a CDL, but good luck to you, i hope you clear this up.

  • that is so cool i want a tranny like that for my jeep....

  • Thanks for the post of this, when I was younger my Dad used to drive an old International Dump truck with the two gear shifts, brings back some memories of me being glued to his hands as he did it. steven

  • thats a 20 speed right? does any one know where i can locate a 15 speed im looking for one for a 71 r model

  • That is amazing. I don't think I would be able to quad box shift no matter how long I practice. Great job man. Steve

  • Reminds me of a 24 speed bike.

  • "dude! what is that all doing?"

Oh, going through about twelve or fifteen to sixteen or twenty gears.

    "

When they sent me out with one of the older guys to learn how to drive it, I was really jazzed (hey...I was 19) He looked at me and said, "It ain't no f**kin' honor, kid". LOL! "

Double LOL! I thought somewhere along the way ya hadda be least 21.

  • dude! what is that all doing?

  • Ha, ha! I learned to drive wheeler in a B61 with a quad box. (36 years ago) Beautiful paint but the inside of the cab was a horror show. No floor mats so my feet roasted waiting in the pit. When they sent me out with one of the older guys to learn how to drive it, I was really jazzed (hey...I was 19) He looked at me and said, "It ain't no f**kin' honor, kid". LOL!

  • stuff that i have enough trouble with an 18 speed road ranger

  • looks like areal pig of a thing to drive

  • Quad boxing while floating the gears in a non syncroed tranmission, some one need to give you a fuckin award.

  • You have some serious skills man!!! Damn good shift work. I haven't seen someone work a quad box since I was a kid. Kick ass job!!!

  • Watching this sure brought back some memories. I drove B-81 and B-83 (Cummins 220 motor) tandem dump trucks when I started driving in the sixties. It was cool to learn how to run and shift those trucks, but after an 11 or 12 hour day I was happy to jump into my car with an automatic! I do remember that you learned how to downshift on a long hill with a Quadraplx, because if you missed a gear you were pulling over and starting all over again....after doing that a few times you learned quickly!

  • you can make that mack hum good good job from an old timer

  • Phew..no one should work a vehicle that needs constantly two hands to change a gear. And a non-synchro box? When I die, they'll probably put me behind the wheel of one like this. Oh how I wish I had taken a video of my old works Renault G260 with an 18-speed box. Easiest, though clumsiest vehicle to work with.

  • @Rekku9

Well, back then they did...as already mentioned here.

  • I love this truck, I drive the same one at work and its fun as hell!

  • might get old after a while

  • OMG...

  • hey mate have you ever heard of blokes (guys) bending the gear sticks in these? a mate of our family taught me how to drive and he told me they used to bend them so it was esier and pretty much opperate the gears with one hand.

  • Nice clean shifting. Good driving, i rebuild transmissions for a living would love to see inside one of therse twin sticks

  • Nothing more then a 5 spd and a 3 spd hooked together(married).

  • @59Mack

    Quadbox is a 5 and 4.

  • @Asstacular

Yes, I know. This truck has a 5x3 which is a Triplex.

  • @59Mack ; What engine was in your 59 mack? Just curious. I think dad's 59 kw had a 185 cummins, with straight pipes. pretty loud climbing hills. A long ways from today's 525 cat

  • @cowboyblue55 It still has the original 673 Mack(normally aspirated), 180 hp(give or take). It has a small muffler under the cab and twin pipes. Pretty loud and yes, far from todays power!

  • wow. that's pretty impressive. i use to hear the old heads talk about these tran's, but i had no idea of what they were talking about .wow!!!! is that normal driving, cause it looked like you were hotdogginit. damn fine show!

  • By the way very nice shifting. Nothing like the good ole days. ;)

  • Is that a 4X3, or a 4X4 trans?

  • 5x3

  • i had noticed this. Ihad actually made a effort to count the gears and thats when i realized it was a 5x3. Cool truck regardless. Do you still haul with the truck, or is it more of a keepsake?

  • I use it most every weekend all summer long to pull my race car trailer(40ft'r)

  • Cool, what kind of race car is it? I'm a big drag racing fan, and love cars in general.

  • 5 10 15, i thought it said it was a 20 speed. 5 10 15 20. that is five on 4.

  • Duplex is 5x2(10 spd), Triplex is 5x3(15 spd), Quad is 5x4(20 spd).

This truck is a 5x3(15 spd)

  • I thought it was a 4x4, since no one uses the 1st gear which make it look like a three speed .Dont hit any pot holes! You got it down pretty good, dont forget to turn left!

  • i saw that guy broke down on the side of the road yesterday & all this steam wuz comin out from underneath

  • You didn't see this truck on the side of the road yesterday, it's safe/sound in the garage.

  • just kiddin' man. good shiftin'

  • Somehow..I could tell there was some sarcasm in that........

  • thank goodness i'm too young to having to drive one of those!

  • The proper name from Mack is RQ720 Quadruplex,

Uncle Welda is more than a driver, he'z a truck freak, a mutant trucker, clutch who needs a clutch??? I like using my Jakes when I up-shift, faster, smoother, better...unless you're a dingaling. All the guyz I've driven with do the same, even my Daddy who raised me from 4 yrs old in trucks.

  • I read somewhere on the internet and it said that trucker perfer manual over automatic. Is that true and why?

  • because they will not hold a gear going up hill it will constantly down shift

  • My Hats off to ya sir. bet your glad when you get into top gear. good job on running the gears in that beast.Keep on a truckin

  • screw that ill stick to a 10 speed. haha im not even a truck driver

  • Ah yes, truck porn. I love it. Now that's a skill and a talent few posses today. Good job, and to think they used to do this all the time. Now, were's that sodie bottle I've got to pee.

  • A lost art from back when you really had to drive a truck - not just operate it!

  • I heard about these when I went to driving school...

  • fuckin spot on mate!!!

  • I really want to drive one of these someday.

  • why so many gears on semi-trucks?

  • The max rpm of a typical diesel engine is 2100 rpm. Unlike a car engine that can run up to 5500+ rpm. Thus you need alot of gears to be able to get up to speed. Most gear changes are only about 400 drop in rpm.

  • oh ok thanks

  • wow nice shifting..i have a 1965 B-75 with a quad box and im not near as good as he is!

  • wow nice shifting..i have a 1965 B-75 with a quad box and im not near as good as he is!

  • So it's a quad box not a tri-plex ? It's been 20 years so I was not sure but I thought the QUAD was a H pattern and HIGH was bottom right. Anyway I sure would love to drive one again once in a while. You can drive that with manual steering u can drive anything. Mine used to freeze up and I would have to get out with a crowbar and pry on it!

  • "HIGH is bottom right..." It depends on the gearing (overdrive/Low) pattern and model...

  • Why does that not seem like a quad box. It seems he is shifting from LO to HIGH, then DIRECT. Instead of DIRECT then HIGH. Of course LO-LO is not used except in the mud for reverse and 1st only. Could this be a triplex ?

  • lo to direct in most of them was a U pattern with the direct in rear right, low in the left rear

  • ah lad brings back memories good and bad of driving around NYC with a 69 Mack over 10 years ago and same truck is still going, nice changes lad.

  • ah lad brings back memories good and bad of driving around NYC with a 69 Mack over 10 years ago and same truck is still going, nice changes lad.

  • OMG Never seen anything like that, THat's wild.... TKP

  • what the hell?!

  • when I first started we ran Chev tandems 427 gas motors and 5+4 trans about the same horsepower as the 711 half the torque if them sticks had of been knitting needles I would have Knit alot of socks the gas engine was easier to drive more RPM's to work with. The guy in the video knows his stuff I was never much into the arm through the wheel stuff just every now and then on a down shift just to prove I could, thanks for the memories

  • I guess the closest you'd come to a quad box these days is a 14 speed Spicer with 5 gears on the main and 4 speed air-shift, which makes it a helluva lot easier doing a compound change. But even then, most people look at that blue Spicer gearshift knob and don't want to know. They'd be stuffed with twin sticks. We've sure come a long way over the years with big power, comfortable trucks, and now autos.

  • two hander

  • That guy is a pro, he makes it look easy. I just drive once in awhile for fun and got pretty flawless on the flats but the hills can be hard especially when it's dark you have to just guess how much the truck will speed up or slow down in the time you take to shift. Sometimes you're forced to skip gears. I don't know why people start hollering at me when I say I like automatics, not that I can't shift it's just laborious :-)

  • his missed 4th gear at 2:32.this is a 15 speed.right?

  • Ya, I skipped over 2nd-lo, just went right to 2nd direct.

    It is a 15 spd.

  • Masturbator! :) How so now appropriate was your comment.

  • who what????

  • classy...but I think I'll just stick with my Roadranger..

  • I used to drive an old R-Model Mack with the 5& 2,but my uncle used to Drive for Dufferin Concrete and drove a B-Model with a 5 & 4.

Love Reverse Low...it was so slow i figure I could put t in gear at full revves, get out of the truck and go the washroom and i bet that dam thing would hve moved 10 feet...Great memories..Thanks.

  • Looks like a video game, ill stick with 3-6 speed trannys

  • The reason why there are so much confusion on how to shift a two stick transmission is because there are so many differnt combinations. I have had a Triplex and Quadplex, which are married transmissions and I have had a Mack 5 speed with a Spicer 4 speed behind it. I have also had a Roadranger 10 spead with a Spicer 4 speed behind it. What I'm trying to say is back in the day, with low horsepower and low torque, we would try anything to get the load over the next hill.

  • my father had one of those and he used to travel to the rural places of nicaragua going uphill, downhill on dirtroads through rivers mudd with a load trailer and that's what i call skills

  • man, thats pretty cool. i'd like to hear more.

  • well he used to transport all kind of cargo all over the country (nicaragua) i was a kid back then but i have very fresh memories of him transporting bulldozers,d-10 and all kind of construction machinery and when the truck was stuked they used the d-10 to get it out it was very impresive there is where you put a truck to the test and see the tremendus power it is unbelibeable.

  • Hey man, you do what you gotta do, when you gotta do it. You wanna see some truck torture in tropical jungles, type in "Volvo Logging truck Sumatra" in the search on Youtube, and watch that video. Thats where you see the shit get separated from the real deal. Thats a cool story. thanks for sharing. Have a great 2008. Check out my videos when you get a chance

  • I just typed in "Volva Logging Truck Sumatra" and guess what - there's no such video.

  • Steve, try Volvo Logging Truck Sumaltra

  • And AGAIN, Silverfox605, "No videos found for Volvo Logging Truck Sumaltra .

Thanks anyway. You should reupload it if you'd uploaded that.:-)

  • @silverfox605

    Sorry, not there.

  • about 10 years ago I worked up in Bute Inlet , BC canada at a logging camp and the off-highway lowbed they had moving the road crew equipment was a 1974 Hayes HD that was converted to a Cat 3406 Natural with a 4 speed auxilary and a Fuller 18 speed main. That truck had so much reduction. Unbelieveable. Took a while to get to 40 km/h though :P Cpuld move a D8K Cat like fuckall though, especially on all-axle lockup

  • I once rode with a dude who ran all 20 gears...by the time he was in 20th speed we still were barely doing forty..man that is too much like work

  • Roadranger Transmissions are easier to shift.

  • Damn he makes it look easy!!!GREAT sound too, there is nothing like it-and "look Ma, no clutch!" (except for takeoff...)

  • What you don't see is that he only went one block!

    ;)

  • I am confused!!! Please explain the two sticks.

  • Right stick is main box, the left is the compound or "splitter". The new trucks use air cylinders to do the same thing.

  • Man, that's cool. I've always wanted to do that. :D Love the sound too.

  • lo direct hi

  • 5 on what, 4.. 5x4= 20.. i believe..

  • Jeez talk about a stick shift! Man you are old school. They are starting to build semi-trucks with automatics now. Such a shame! We dont want old grannies or ditzy teenage girls behind the wheels of big rigs do we? Yeah id like to see one of those pretty boys that call themselves truckers drive this!

  • The sad part is an old granny would be more likely to know how to drive one of these things than most of the younger generation today.

  • It's true DX *is 17, drives a 5spd*

  • You mean also shift these two sticks as well?

  • LOL--Of cours every large buses had automatics put into them around 1970s but it only took off in the 1980s...good point.
