@Ikatono it can be done see it depends what system you use some people roll d20s, some role 4 d6 then remove the lowest score some roll 5 d 6 and minus 2 lowest scores. my first character I ever made which I still have the sheet for we used the 4 d6 minus the lowest one and I got 3 18's 1 17 and 2 16's

chances of rolling the following with 4d6:

6x18: 1 in 55 billions

3x18,2x17,1x16: 1 in 1.8 billions

and with 5d6

6x18: 1 in 875,658

3x18,2x17,1x16: 44,751

why? chance of rolling 18:

4d6: 1.6%

5d6: 10.2%

conclusion: rolling that high with 4d6 sounds to improbable for me to believe, rolling it with 5d6 sounds amazing but not unbelievable, this was calculated by brute forcing all combinations with a python script (took less than 0.01 sek)

but when rolling a character in 3.5 you roll 4d6 then take away the lowest number. this eqation isnt a normal one because you have to account for variable change because the lowest one is always taken away. it doesn't mater what the 4th die is it is still taken away .

@coreydm676 I know, I made an algorithm that calculated all dice rolls from 4x1 to 4x6, for each combination of rolls I added the all but the lowest together, so I have taken this into account when calculating the above odds, the totals to 6^4=1296 dice rolls, only one of those combinations lands a 3, where 21 combinations yields a 18, therefore the chance to get all 18 are 1 in (1296/21)^6 = 55 billions, I can upload the script and the result file if you are interested.

This is about the same level of funny as ordering two pizzas for a session (weird pizza, veal parm and "boardwalk", which had whiz and fries.....really weird) and when they got there, our DM asks if we finish the battle first and the resident fighter says "I VOTE WE ATTACK THE PIZZA!!!!!!!!"

The best part was the DM actually rolled a die and then raised his arms like a evangelical priest and says "Free 20's for everyone!"

We were tired and high on sugar and caffiene, so yeah.......

The part about Scott (Galstaff!!!) not wanting to "use up" the detect magic spell reminded me of how back then how different the spell system is since a mage had to rest for x hours to be able to cast spells. After spells were cast, they have to rest again (thus making battle-ready fighters wait) so they had to be conservative/decisive about it in dungeon situations where they can't afford to rest where in modern day RPGs, it's mana based and a caster can drink a mana potion and be ready again.

@night524 As a DM, let me tell you that yes, he got power hungry at the end, but those characters deserved it. Note to DMs: Always start your characters together, or send the rest out of the room so you can focus on the actual encounter. But really? Those PCs were crap. At least, when a dwarven barbarian tried to spend his enchanted adventure-hook coin at a tavern, he was in character, not being stupid.
