LOL I built mine for like HALF that much. Asus P6T, Intel i7 950, Intel Network Card, 24GB RAM Corsair, 3 1TB Seagate SATA Drives, and that's it. No CD/DVD, no Video, no keyboard,...
P6T ($99), Intel Card ($30), 24GB ($300), i7 ($200), Power Supply ($50), Case ($50)... Total: 750 and change! beat that! (ohh,.. and an Adaptec RAID Card... for $50 on eBay!
All You missed was that INTEL CPU has to support VT-X virtualizaton FLAG. AMD CPUs also has to support special virualization CPU flags to get things work good.
@blacksiddis : "White Box" means that the server was assembled by the end-user from components, rather than having a vendor (such as Dell or HP) provide you a fully assembled and integrated system.
ESXi is the free version of VMWare's ESX server, the operating system provided by VMWare to run virtual machines on a given physical server.
@CopperCheetah, Technically, ESXi is VMware's hypervisor without the RHEL console OS. It's not a matter of a free vs non-free in that there are two versions of the hypervisor, since ESXi can be free or it can be licensed for use all the way up to the Enterprise Plus license with all the great VMware features like DRS, vMotion and HA. ESX (without the i) is end-of-life with the last version being 4.1. Only ESXi in all its versions will be available now-which is a great thing for sure.

Cool vid. I'm thinking of setting up something like that in my home for a web development server (prolly running Ubuntu Server) and a FreeNAS storage server. What would u suggest as minimum hardware for smooth runtime?
Also what is the song heard while on the fast forward of the assembly?
I think I spent around $1200 on mine and that's with a storage upgrade this past month with enterprise sata drives and a new larger case. 45w dual core AMD CPU + ASRock mobo 8 Gb DDR2 3.25 TB of storage for VMs IDE drive for ESXi Dual gigabit ethernet (Intel Pro 1000) Antec 300 Case Scythe S-Flex fans 520w Corsair PSU 4 port Sata controller Most of my VMs are not heavily utilized (as they are at home) - I've had 16 VMs running with no issues at all :-)
I built an ESXi server for under 1500 CAD. Core i7-920, 6GB of OCZ RAM, 4x500GB Seagate 7200.12 HDD, Foxconn Renaissance motherboard, 750W Antec Earthwatt PSU.
Where is the Sense of putting the OS on a single flashdrive instead of some logical raid volume of about 5-10gigs ? IF 3ware is a real hardware based raid controller it should be no problem handling booting linux however the disks are stacked into the enclosure. so why seperate it to its own boot drive ?? there will be no fault tolerance with that. BTW: i prefer ICP VORTEX (aka Adaptec SATA Raid controllers). Audio Alarm, 100% linux support out of the box, great console/cli tools. great manuals
ESXi install as an image and so you want it on a seperate drive (otherwise your VMFS partition gets wiped if you reinstall). RAID is really not required for ESXi installations (IMO) because the install is so fast and ever so easy.
Having said that, I gave up installing ESXi to a jump drive on my ESXi whitebox as the system would hang for some reason. But hey, most of my hardware is not supported, and now that I have returned to booting ESXi from a regular drive I have zero issues again :-)
The asus P6T doesn't have a built in card, hence no video output. The server doesn't need a monitor once it's setup, but I think it would be a challenge to install windows w/o output
This could have been great if you would have taken more time demonstrating hardware install and setup AND actual install of ESXi. What was the rush?
