This is not the whole song. Jeannie dies because her parents go out drinking, leave her alone, and to punish her parents God burns down the house and kills the little girl. It's a very creepy song. I saw it performed live by DP and PW in Nashville in the late 60s.
i heard this song at a slim whitman sjhow in aberdeen it was sung by jeannie denver the yorkshire rose the best ive heard yet and that was in the early seventies
My dad is a singer and he plys this song all the time for all ten of us. We just love this song. But does anybody know how Jeanie died? it never says.
Oh gosh, don't start me on Teddy bear, Red Sovine....I'll be crying myself to sleep tonight!!! What fantastic 2 songs, wow. Takes me back to being a kid again...Oh please, take me back...Just for one day, just for one more cuddle :(
It does not matter how many times I hear this song,...I will cry every time.I love the sad story behind it and the eternal flame that took care of the fear.God bless porter and Dolly :)
i love this song and when i lost my baby as a stillborn.....i put solar lights on her grave ........so she will never be afraid

@1932jeannie That doesnt make any sense. You can't die just because your afraid of the dark! Something IN the dark would make sense

What a sad song. Almost brings tears, thinking of Porter, who was the master of sad songs & Dolly very good too.
