This is not the whole song. Jeannie dies because her parents go out drinking, leave her alone, and to punish her parents God burns down the house and kills the little girl. It's a very creepy song. I saw it performed live by DP and PW in Nashville in the late 60s.

i had an album of theres called just the two of us

and it had the song jeannies afraid of the dark but there

was another song on it called the party which refers to them going out and drinking and coming home to a fire at there house
