  • I had a go at some tricks. Check out Ato and Ati Supernatural Powers

  • Great thanks.

  • Thanks man!

  • Anything more on duration. New to this prpogram from iMovie and this one is killing me

  • Do you use compressor?

  • I'm coming from using Avid for years to FCX. In Avid, I was able to hit "+"or "-" and enter a frame value that would move my cursor to the value I typed in. I figured out how to do it in the timeline, but can't figure it out on my clips. Can you help? Oh and another question, is there a way to spin an image or graphic 360 degrees? Yet something I was able to do in Avid, but can't seem to figure out in FCX. Thanks!..Oh yeah, get videos on FCP, keep them coming!

  • you can actually just highlight everything and pick the effect you want and double click it and it applies it to all clips. let me know if this helps?

  • Thanks sooooo much. I was wondering how to do exactly those things for about 3 months... =)

1 more question: Once you finish a project, do u keep it in FcpX or do u delete it and store it somewhere ... ?? What if u want to do some more Editing later on? Thanks.

  • @actingasjia wow, sorry for the typing mistakes...^^

  • @actingasjia fcp pro x is pretty cheap on the apple store... Fcp pro 7 used to be 1000$!! Fcp is the best editing software, it's is NOT at all like imovie. It gives you all the tools you need.

  • Hi. I got Final cut express 4 about a year or 2 ago, and i'm just starting to use it. Its really confusing, and i just keep going back to iMovie. This looks really similar to iMovie. DO you think I should buy this final cut or stay with the old one/imovie? By the way I make artsy videos and music videos. Thanks! :)

  • How would I change the duration on thenes and transitions? Do you have a video on that?

  • @RichardMoreno24 I think right click and there will be an option for duration control.

  • fantastic and easy to follow video for a newby. Thanks

  • Great change from the other tutorials I've been watching. I'm going to check right now, if you have other final cut vids, i am subscribing. Thank you.

  • That band-wipe is ugly.

  • When I export in H.264 I only get audio in one of the speakers! Why, and what can I do about it?

    Informative and good video! :)

  • @NordicSpartan I know I'm not matt but I might be able to help.

first things first, are you using a stereo or mono microphone?

  • @hobocamptheater For the project I refered to I used both my camera (NIkon) audio and audio recorded with the internal mic on my iMac. I haven't had any problems with these microphones using iMovie. The strange thing, however, is that when playing the project in Final Cut Pro X sound is played in both speakers, it is first when exporting it fails. Thanks for your help!

  • @BergeMusic I can't really help you there, I just can't seem to find a reason for such a problem, sorry.

  • @MattsMacintosh Sorry about the noob question but what do u do to get the red dot where you click ???

  • awesome! thank you!

  • OMG i have that SLR Film ... it was my dads

  • How do you add a color border and shadow to a pip?

  • hi. great vid, helped me a lot. But how do you get up the animation tab?

    /Lisa

  • Hey Matt, I updated to Lion, and now my Canon programs (From CDs that came with the 60D) doesn't work and there is no updates I can find. Is there an alternative or something? THANKS!

ps. I need the one that allows to control the camera from my Mac.

  • What program do u use to record your screen???

  • can u uncompundclip a compound clip?

  • @endlessitaly21 Right click the compound clip and click "Break apart clip items".

  • @MattsMacintosh this video is but vids like "steve jobs fun facts" was WAY to small. Plus there were not that many fun facts in the video - i guess your vids are just so good that i want to see more. At times 1 min 30secs just doesnt seem long enough

  • Matt, I have a prob with uploading to youtube via FCPX. everything goes perfect but then at 95 perfect is just stops and doesn't move at all. What could cause this? What should I do?

  • This probably has already been asked, but is it general consensus that FCP 7 is much better than FCP X?

  • A clip within a clip within a clip? CLIPCEPTION!!!!!

  • Thanks for the help Matt you're awesome what would you recommend more? FCP X or Adobe After Effects?

  • great vid, knew most of it, but I still learned some thing :) I do have a request. like how to make ("chapter" markers) is this something that FCP X does not support any more or do I need compressor. the old FCP and iMovie will let you. Just thought Id ask. Thanks

  • Can you do some Movie Maker and/or Movie Maker Live tips? I don't want to waste money on a program I won't use all the time.

  • This was great, i've just switched from iMovie to FCPX, any more tips like this would be great :)

  • Thank you.

  • Matt can you PLEASE tell me what memory card reader you were using on your office setup video? PLEEASSE :D

  • @rodrigosendas I don't have it anymore and don't remember. I'll check my past orders on Amazon and get back to you

  • Hi Matt! I have problems with the sound, i record my videos in clubs with loud music, with a Rode video mic pro, all the settings are correct, the sound after rendering the video is excellent but when i upload it to Youtube it distorts like hell...so i was wondering what are the correct sound settings and how much can i boost it in order to have it clear on youtube?

  • Hey matt, do you think could do a video on what settings you use on screenflow?

  • Great video! Could you do some iMovie tips and tricks.

  • @MacDude2020 he's done some already. :) check out his playlists.

  • How can I get that wallpaper,Matt?

  • Nice keep them coming

  • Helpful as always Matt awesome vid!

  • I love you and I would bear your child into this wicked crazy world. Keep doing fcpx videos!

  • Oh wow, you have to go through an extra menu to add a transition to a standalone clip if it's not in the main "storyline"? Another reason why I'll stick with FCP7 then. Haha. I really hope there are some updates soon that give back some functionality. I really want to use FCPX but there are just too many things I use a lot that aren't there.

  • Thanks Matt, the first one really helped me a lot, I couldn't understand why every time I put a transition, the audio went out of sync, thanks for solving it. The other tips were great too, but why no 1080p?

  • Great video! Even though I'm somewhat familiar with the program, I didn't know how to add transitions to the top row of clips. I now know to make that a storyline! Thanks for the tips! I look forward to more videos.

  • Hey Matt, is there a video effect you use when you're transitioning a clip from blur to focus? or do you normally just do that with your camera lens while filming?

  • @ducksfood Normally just do that with the camera, but there is a blur transition

  • Great Video Matt!

  • Thank you!! Besides using the basic video animation options, I was wondering how to implement video transitions. Now I know to turn my clip into a storyline. Awesome tips!

  • I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 it has the fastest render and expert speed at full quality and render depth on my 2006 MacBook White with a Intel GMA 950 FCPX won't even run on that lol

  • Matt can you make an advanced video

  • hahahaha inception style

  • MOR E MORE MORE

  • damn that looks complicated.

  • Most of those tips were actually verryyy useful too me! :) Thank you so much, those transitions and picture in picture tips were just what I needed!

  • Great! Thanks!

  • i just comment to make you money. thanks

  • I am thinking about final cut upgrade from imovie, but dont want to spend all that money, could you please do another video like showing all the things you can get out of imovie

  • @MACmySTUFF I've done a lot of videos showing all the awesome things iMovie can do. Check out my channel if you are interested.

  • Inception!

  • More FCPX tutorials please! They're awesome. =)

  • You are a genius.

  • inception style :D

  • Another great video.

  • hello plz read this im try to do a shot were u have the camra focust on a persone and in the back ground u have like slow mo people or super fast like all these people behind walking in fastford and the persone is just their normal speed can u show us how to do this

  • Woah, as soon as the video began to play I thought it was iMovie. -_-

  • how did you get your dock like that?

  • @njmalone26 An application called Mirage or Mirage Dock, I guess.

  • "h.264 is obviously the standard compressioning codec for internet-based video" shhh, don't tell Google!

But seriously, I was wondering if there was a way to manually alter the curve between two keyframes. By default there's a straight line, and you can alter to curve on one side, the other, or both, but is there a way of adjusting the rate of the curve?

  • @LOTRzagorath Hmmm... that's actually a great question. I'll see if I can figure out a way to do it.

  • @MattsMacintosh Cool, thanks!

Keep up the great videos :D

  • so helpful !

  • Adding transitions without clips moving around is a hide help to me, I've spent a long time trying to figure out how to do that.

  • How do you get no lag when running Final Cut? I have a Macbook Pro core i5 and Final Cut eats my memory like candy. You got any tips Matt? Thanks! :D

  • @thecheetodude24 He has a rather powerful Mac Pro, that's why.

  • @thecheetodude24 Oh, just noticed he was using a MacBook for this.

But he does have a Mac Pro.

  • @thecheetodude24 I would open Activity Monitor and see what aspect of your system is causing the lag.

  • @MattsMacintosh 4GB RAM are not enough.. i started working but it really slowed down and there was maybe 10MBs ram left.. but thanks for another GREAT video

  • @MattsMacintosh It looks like kernel_task is taking up about 300+ mbs of my RAM. Do you know anything about it? I did a google search and it seems like it's an important thing for running Lion. Thanks anyway. :D

  • @thecheetodude24 My i7 macbook pro even lags loads with FCPX and it's new. While it's background rendering, I find the audio keeps taking massive losses on playback and such, so it's not really background :P I still end up waiting for the thing.

  • @RobertJFreemantle Yeah, but my problem is that when I open it, the cursor starts fading in and out. I believe it's a RAM problem, but 4 gbs of ram is a lot for me... lol

  • I'm moving from iMovie and those were just perfect tips for me (especially the last one :D ) thanks for the tips!

  • Excellent tips Matt

  • another helpful tip for me Matt, thank you once again

  • Question::::: How do u make someones face blur out of the clip so the persons faces gets pixalated?????

  • @funnymanorityy Just use the censor effect.

  • You should work for a movie making company

  • Matt, What lenses are you using now?

  • @thebluecollargeek Mostly the 24-70mm, but I've been using the 50mm more often since I've been shooting in all natural light.

  • @MattsMacintosh Yeah, thats almost 2.5 stops of light your losing with the 24-70. I've been thinking about getting the 24-70 but I just don't want that f4 limitation! Probably gonna go with the 70-200 f2.8 Sigma. Which is going to be my dedicated photography lens.

  • @thebluecollargeek f4? it goes to 2.8......

  • @TheSlimeBox My bad! I was thinking he had the IS version at f4. Wonder which one is better?

  • @thebluecollargeek actually the IS f4 and version is a 24-105 lens and I believe it has macro capabilities.

  • Please help me. I can't move the text.

    /watch?v=rcRe20JQgiA

  • @iPhoneiPadReviews Tweet me, @applehockey -- I can help you

  • Thanks for listening to my request :)

(adding the translation to 2nd picture)

  • Matt...I look forward to your videos. Keep the final cut pro tutorials coming. I just bought it (coming from imovie) and your videos are very helpful. We appreciate your work.

  • Did you do this on your MacBook Air or your Mac Pro?

  • @hjmeix I did this on the Air. My Pro is packed up right now to move.

  • @MattsMacintosh try mac tracker from the app store it has all the mac histrroy

  • Great video, Matt!!! Could you do a video on lighting? I find that I can never get the lighting right in videos...

  • Thanks for the h264 information I was having that issue

  • That looked like it was going to export pretty quick for a MacBook Air.

  • I'm gonna upgrade from iMovie.

  • I have not used FCP X yet, for applying for example color corrections to multiple clips, is there a way to do this without creating a compound clip? in final cut 7 you can simply copy a clip and then highlight the clips you want and then 'paste attributes' which allows you to copy certain elements of the original clip, such as 'filters', 'basic motion', and 'pan' is there an equivalent of this in X? thanks for the vid matt.

  • question. can you motion track text in final cut like after affects? just text and no animations or both.

  • @drakeknowstechnology Nope, there is no motion tracking in Final Cut

  • I don't know why people use FCPX, it sucks.

  • @thenerdal For a digital based workflow, I would argue that FCPX is actually the best editing software available today. It absolutely does not "suck".

  • @MattsMacintosh Lack of EDL, XML, OMF,

  • @thenerdal Yeah? How often have you needed any of those? I assume you must work in a large editing house that does a lot of traditional work if those are critical features to you. Which one is it? I bet there's no way you just read those terms on some disgruntle TV editors review of FCPX and therefore came to the conclusion it must "suck". All joking aside, only a tiny fraction of people who edit videos need those features, so for them FCPX sucks, but for everyone else it rocks. Hard.

  • Is it worth going from FCP 7 To FCPX?

  • @TechTimeWithNoah at this point, with apple not releasing 'pro' features such as mulitcam, EDL, XML etc... and the difference UI along with little support for tape based workflows it is at this point a tool in an editors tool box, you need to evaluate what you want out of your editing software and pick what is best for you.

  • @TechTimeWithNoah Do you work in broadcast TV? Then no. Do you make digital works or short films? Then yes.

  • @MattsMacintosh Thanks Man, And Keep Up The Good Work!

  • Wow this really helped me out. Still a noob at FCX. Thanks alot! Love your videos more and more.

  • @alexey2Kde Awesome. Glad I could help.

  • Great tutorial, but FCX is such a disappointment.

Stick to FCP7 or switch over to Adobe Premier, don't purchase this.

  • Do you recommend FCP for a student? Or just stick with iMovie?

  • Hey, great video, it was pretty helpful to me. I have one question though, I thought maybe you can help me. I tried exporting videos as H.264, but they always come out as such crap. As in, either the video is not working or there are other bad issues with that so I always do it through the compressor. Do you have any idea what might be causing that?

  • @missbuttercup90 I'd have to know more about your original footage. Shoot me an email with the info on it and how you are importing.

  • So what is your editor of choice?

  • @romshua I've been using FCPX, but have nothing against the others at all. Like with most things, each has its strengths and weaknesses. Its all about picking the right one for your needs.

  • @MattsMacintosh Personally I like it too. I think its great, and I don't really know why other people hate it....but as your said its about picking the right one.

  • Sweet video!

  • Glad to see this Matt. With all the negative reviews about Final Cut Pro X, I've hesitated purchasing. But you are showing how easy it is to use ... with great features. Love your channel.

  • holy crap. i have that camera. how much are they selling with the shutter button broken?

  • @appleAddict240872 About $10 broken, about $50 working

  • thanks for the video this helps.

  • My video production class requires that I export my footage as a .avi file. Do I need to use compressor for this? If so then how? Thanks, and keep up the great work!

  • @LandonGerrits Yep, you'll need compressor, or a third party transcoding app.

  • Wow Matt this video was great. Really helped me with with a few little problems I was having. I love the simplicity with which you pack so much pertinent information.

  • Hey Matt great video - can u do a video about frames per second for cameras I'm a little confused on that subject

  • what is your job ? You make great videos .

  • @costumATX I'm an unemployed mercenary right now, but I'll be going to film school in the Spring.

  • is there a workflow for adding dvd chapter markers? I still do that for clients.

  • Great video. Thanks Matt.

  • inception style!!! =P

  • love the video, but when i make a compound clip and i have some overlapping audio or something, it creates a compound clip that messes with my main storyline especially if the audio doesn't end exactly when the clip does. any help?

  • ahh this really helped, thank you :)

  • Motion tracking and also muzzle flashes in Motion 5

  • Can I do that compound thing in iMovie? Don't have FCP!

  • Incredible video Matt. Was extremely helpful for when I edit in FCPX :-)

  • Matt, Watching your videos has really helped me start to edit and make good videos!

  • Thanks for the tutorial! My question is: When I will have the pleasure to go to a cinema to

Watch a film by Matthew Pierce (did I spell your name correctly?

  • OMG! You have a Pentax ME Super? Me too! Awesome Camera! Analog rocks ;)

    :)

  • @powerpaul1996 oh crap, it's a Canon! It really look similar to the Pentax ME/ME Super

  • great video

  • Hey Man There is a intro builtin to Final Cut Pro Can you make it for me dont have a mac... (yet) for a shout out it is built in and will take like 30 seconds just edit the text it is in the titles tab tutorial if need youtube.com/watch?v=ONhV2NO46MM THANKS MATT LOVE YOUR VIDS!!!

  • Matt – this was great, very helpful, thank you.

  • the picture and picture tip REALLY helped me!!! :D

    Thanks man :)

  • @Xeyad1 No problem

  • Hey Matt, would you say After Effects is worth the money? Please reply...

  • @Snc6475 I can't answer that without know what you want to do with it. Its an amazing program with great features, but its only worth it if you have a need for it.

  • @MattsMacintosh I would use it for special effects, so... can you answer it now?

  • @MattsMacintosh what editing program is your favorite

  • @Snc6475 why does someone ask this question every time he posts a video

  • Your channel rocks!

  • @thiagoarantes Thanks! You rock for leaving a comment.

  • 153

  • Matt every time I export in H.264 from FCPX the audio is always stuck to the right speaker..... I have no idea what I'm doing wrong lol please help :D

  • @iamtimthegreat What are your audio export settings?

  • @MattsMacintosh just whatever the default are. I just bought the software itself so I'm such a noob with it

  • @iamtimthegreat The default is set by the first clip in your project. Go to "window"- "show audio enhancements" and see if both channels have audio.
