Actually as lot of re-enactors in England are rubbish too. They think they are in a movie most of the time and do things which, historically speaking, would be wrong. Its no doubt they look good, but they dont look right.
This is sad...and there are manny good ...verry good reanactors and living history people in belgium...But seems that museeum officials stil don't have a clue what they are dooing...go and take a loock in france and england guys...and stop mak us loock like idiots
@nockyboy88 Thank you for informing me, I have read about this conflict and this battle in Barbara W Tuchmans "a distant mirror". Its a rebellion of flemish burghers against the french king if im not mistaken.
I assume they believed if they filmed close enough to the faces we wouldn't be able to see how bad the fighting is. Strange idea being there is no story.
@slayerfromabove: templars were all around in those days...they had gathered a fortune during the crusades and were bankers and entrepreneurs, as well as a warrior guild. Every major city would've had at least some templars around...
yes, but it's known that templars were never allowed to fight against fellow christians, and above all, Templars had their HQ in Paris, so it's quite odd they would side with the rebels
@slayerfromabove: they were allowed when Christians did acts that would go against god. So the templars were allowed to fight Christians, on some occasions. Also note that, by that time, the templars were less of an army for Christ, than a warrior-band of entrepreneurs. Later on, the Pope would wage war against them. Also note that the Flemings weren't rebels, but freedomfighters. They fought to liberate their own lands from foreign occupation, which separates them from rebels.
But no mentally stable 'entrepreneur' would ever fight against France in the middle ages, because the French were a leading faction in matters of trade and banking. robin hood was a thief, Vlad Drakul was a mutilator, and the Flemish at 1302 were rebels.
@slayerfromabove: the Templars were richer than France (in fact, the Templars came to an end, because they bankrupted a French king), and they had diplomatic immunity. So if the cause was just (and the purses filled), they'd fight even the Pope himself. Also note that Flanders was also better at banking and trade, which is why France wanted it.
The Flemish in 1302 were freedom fighters, not rebels, because Flanders was invaded by France and occupied and the Flemish fought to liberate our land.
@slayerfromabove: to clarify the difference between freedom fighters and rebels: freedom fighters had their country invaded and occupied, and want it liberated again. Rebels already belonged to the country, but disagree with some policies. The actions are similar, but the motives are not. To give an up-to-date example: a Muslim flying a plane in a building is a terrorist, an American standing up against the US government is a rebel and a Iraqi fighting Americans in Iraq is a freedom fighter.
@slayerfromabove There were templars stationed in the "landcommanderij" of Alden Biesen in what is now Belgian Limburg and they did take part in the battle at the side of the Flemish. Also, more often than not the Templars were at odds with the French crown, being so rich and powerfull and all.
I know it is a common legend, but it has recently been put aside by several famous historians, Templars could not interfere in conflicts between european landlords, as declared in the Papal Bull of 1119. Some Flemish monks made that up to make it look like their struggle for independence was like a crusade. The templars did have conflicts with the French king, but they did not go as far as go to war with him, becausehe was the second most important Church leader after the pope
@stijntje28 "they were rich- we were poor" Please learn some history. The Flemish vasal states were among the wealthiest in Europe at the time. Ghent for example was larger than Paris, where do you think all those grand buildings come from? The Flemish being poor was due to all the foreign invasions - more than half of our national treasures are displayed in French, Austrian, Spanish and other countries' museums, they stole our phat lewt.
@zwerverbeer Our ancestors would be REALLY unhappy with this, why aren't these people equipped with REAL armour and re-enactment weapons as well as trained in AUTHENTIC re-enactment combat?
I saw me uncle Tim,he stands out of the crowd. How the hell do you fight when you don't know who's on your side? Or maybe it doesn't matter, just do the american thing and "Kick some ass".
this is by far not the way a medieval battle goes,
it is also a more of a story to tell infants. the soldiers in these times did not have nice clothing and colourfoul armor and shields, they were filthy and often drunk.
The battle itself is not logical either, in these times there were still lines. where is this film from?

Things i learned from this video:
1- War with a low budget looks less brutal.
2- A Medieval battle is an event where angry people makes weird movements with blades.
3- Medieval battles are a perfect field for some MIDI music composers.
