I actually thought this movie was a bit better than what allot of people give it credit for. Although it did have allot of problems. I have always thought that the main problem with it was not the movie itself but the choppy way it seems to have been edited together. If all the personal scenes had been in the first half leading up to the battle and the second half had all the battle scenes, like in Pearl Harbor, it might have had a smoother flow to it. I really liked it anyway.

I think a big part of it that people miss is that perhaps the North and South just didn't like each other (and still don't to some extent ) they were just waiting for an excuse . @Shafeone People always call it the "Lost Cause" but what convinced many to join to fight was not to fight for slaves many joined feeling they were fighting for their rights, not to own slaves as many that fought never owned slaves but they felt the government was becoming to powerfull. When Grant and Julia married, Colonel Dent gave them slaves upon their marriage. Grant and Julie moved to Missouri, where slavery was allowed. The state of Missouri abolished slavery in January 1865, Julia did not free the slaves till the 13th Amendment. Grant only had to look at his own house to find slaves. I enjoy the irony.

I actually thought this movie was a bit better than what allot of people give it credit for. Although it did have allot of problems. I have always thought that the main problem with it was not the movie itself but the choppy way it seems to have been edited together. If all the personal scenes had been in the first half leading up to the battle and the second half had all the battle scenes, like in Pearl Harbor, it might have had a smoother flow to it. I really liked it anyway.

I think a big part of it that people miss is that perhaps the North and South just didn't like each other (and still don't to some extent ) they were just waiting for an excuse . I see photos of Conf soldiers with signs in front of them , holding a huge bowie knife , that say "Roseville Yankee Killers" etc. This is at the start of the war .Something had been brewing for years and tariffs and slaves etc . are just straws on a strained camels back . The South relied on selling imports to foreign countries. When Lincoln was elected he started the Morril Tariff which raised import taxes from 20% to 47% so many went bankrupt.

When Grant and Julia married, Colonel Dent gave them slaves upon their marriage. Grant and Julie moved to Missouri, where slavery was allowed. The state of Missouri abolished slavery in January 1865, Julia did not free the slaves till the 13th Amendment. Grant only had to look at his own house to find slaves. I enjoy the irony.

Lee went to him more than once to ask him to surrender the army of Virgina during the siege of Pettersburg. On that matter, In war there is no such thing as "Rules of engagement" it has been that way since time began. Sometimes in order to shorten a war atrocities are committed to kill the will of a country to fight on. ie dropping the atomic bomb on Japan. Wars are fought by an army but are lost when the will of its country/people is broken. ie we lost the war in Vietnam but won most of the battles.

The last two weeks of the war, there were so men left who had not run off, the South agreed finally to draft SLAVES. though none ever were processed in time.

But it also become an argument of culture and race and some sought to remove the African race through colonization, be it back to Africa or somewhere in Latin America.
