I had this footage on pause (UPS at the door), only to later find my fifteen year old son had taken my place on the ear buds. I'm like "..hey, I'm listening to that!". My son says, "You know Dad, out of all your 90's bands, I actually like these guys".
i can't help but notice that he must have left his guitar tone with the Gang when he quit. His tone never sounded that good on his solo or Eagles stuff.
No knock on the person who posted this, but can't anyone film a band from the front. I want to see him play the lead solo from the front . Is it against some moral law to show his fingers????!!!I I've noticed this a lot.
Is that the Les Paul that Jimmy Page bought for 500 US Dollars off Joe Walsh in the early seventies? You can just feel the sustain, perfect tuning and pitch out of that axe. Looks like there's a wood Leslie speaker cab hooked up next to the other Marshall cabs. Still, a guitar only plays superbly if the player knows how to play it well. The drums are totally incredible too. What a gem of a video. It's almost like a time warp.
Didn't know too many Leslies that weren't wooden cabinets. Looks like a D122 model. Most were used by Hammond organ players. A lot of guitarists played through them as well when they started to get creative with various effects. Our keyboard player had two of them hooked up. Sometimes played a piano through it on different songs but mostly the organ.
LOL ... man oh man ... I saw these guys open for The Who in Athens, Ohio in 1969 and in Cincinnati at Music Hall in 1970. Both great shows. They look typically 1970s. For those of you who wonder what the 70s looked and sounded like ... watch this video ... LOL.
this is freaken awesome, thanks for the upload. just great quintessential james gang. loved this album. saw him many times out in denver in the early seventies.
I was at a friends house who was a couple of years older and he put this on and I remember loking at the Live at the Filmore cover with the horses hitched up and reading all the liner notes. Wow those were the days.
@jpo2084028 yeah... little known... but well documented fact. besides... I really have to give credit to Dennis Leary... I lifted that line from one of his standup routines when he was ripping Don Henley for his environmental (and whiny) stance. Always thought it was a hilarious line... also when you compare the two's solo work... Joe rocks harder - HANDS DOWN.
@kevin122380 its a joke Denis Leary once used years ago about how cool Joe Walsh is compared to Don Henley... just 'recycling' the laughs... I'm not anti-environmentalism... I'm pro-laughing and not taking ourselves too seriously.... and rocking with awesome guitar tone.
@lodownX I can't stand arrogant ass Henley, he can go fuck himself, Nothing he did with the Eagles compares to "Pretty maids all in a row". There's another two words for Henley!
@jamesdewer That's just a Les Paul plugged into a Marshall turned all the way up - not much to it. They didn't have many pedals back then, anyway. Wah pedal, primitive distortion boxes maybe...
seems like someone is one line away from a heart attack, actually. great powerful vocals, great band. also this band has always had great pulsating bass lines.
@60spastlife Glad someone else noticed. I was initially dismayed when I heard Joe joined up with this middle-of-the-road SoCal band, but it's nice to know he made a lot of dough adding a little "punch" to their stuff ...
Try to imagine Joe, with his own band (with at the very least, Joe Vitale on the kit), doing "Desperado."
Saw these guys in 1970 at a club called Papaliski's in Dayton, Ohio. Small, intimate - just like in this video except no cameras. Joe bantered with the crowd. Dale Peters was new with the group and constantly watched Joe for what looked like a confidence boost - but his bass was rock solid. Jim Fox was, well, what can you say - tight, precise and a real mix-up for this three piece group. (Fox once said that the JAMES GANG "was either the biggest small band or the smallest big band" in the world.
@ckelley63 Long time ago.... In a land far away... but before us is the proof it did exist! It was a small club in the back of "a shopping center." Right next to it was another, mainstream nightspot I believe was called The Lion's Club. In Papaliski's was a huge carpet with pillows here and there. I was laying on the floor with my feet about 3 feet from Walsh's mike stand. (There was some seating if you preferred.) The opening act was a band called Balderdash.
@DAVESIV Wow that's awesome, I've seen a few bands in my days but I can't really say that I've seen any as they were up and coming. The James Gang were a great rocking band you were lucky to have been able to see them back then that up close and personal. Are you from the Dayton area? do you play? Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Before the show they played Neil Young's first solo "album" over the PA. (First time I had heard it.) Back then, these guys were not known in the mainstream. Walsh used a Fender TWIN Reverb AMP, an ECHOPLEX, and a clear Ampeg guitar - the one with changable pick-ups. I think he also had a fuzz and wah. Peters used this same Telecaster bass and a TRAYNOR amp with two cabinents. This is all true kids!
vocal mic too hot? ... probably, the stage volume was so loud the PA had to carry the vocals mainly ... this is obviously recorded from the board ... I'll bet the mix in the room was good
this song is the definition of american hard rock... just like good times bad times should define british hard rock in my opinion... the james gang was so awesome and unique....didnt there used to be a video of The Bomber too?
the grainy 'early 70's biege vid makes it better on this! I think Geddy Lee's Voice dominated in the b/w "Live in Parrasic"(All the world's a Stage) Bastile day, bad audio, the music is better than the voice. though the audio record corrected that.
I loved the gritty style that Joe Walsh and the James Gang had. Take notes; three piece bands like this are all but dead....damn shame too!! Joe Walsh and company absolutely kicked-ass in concert!!
they dont make music like this anymore. Everything today is so polished (I know this is live), this is raw. You can hear the mistakes in the music, and that is what I love about it. It's real musicianship. I love this song!

Definitely Top 50...Just pure power and finesse...You're a Joe Walsh fan and you can't leave this out of his Top5...A great one to be sure...My Top 10 guitarists of all time...
3 masters of their respected instruments. Joe Walsh is the shit. Pete Townshend himself claimed Walsh as one of the most underrated guitarists out there. I can't argue with that. Raw ass-kicking guitar is what Walsh has delivered for 40 years now and will continue to do. JAMES GANG RULES!!!!!
A great, great power trio that was very underrated in the early 70's...Joe Walsh is a total master of guitar even this early in his career...Been a big fan since almost day one...As a music teacher i would play this song for every music class I ever taught in high school and university and then watched as the kids jaws dropped...To quote Joe Walsh 'Made Loud to be played LOUD'...

Walsh is the least skilled musician in that band. What ever happened to that great rhythm section?

One of the top 100 classic rock songs. Maybe top 50.

Definitely Top 50...Just pure power and finesse...You're a Joe Walsh fan and you can't leave this out of his Top5...A great one to be sure...My Top 10 guitarists of all time...

@baridaddy I agree, Joe Walsh is definitely in the top 10, but he was woefully under-rated by the pussies like the Rolling Stone Mag. and others.
