God all the freqbox does is bitch and moan. Cant see why so many love it. I feel that every source that runs through it eventually sounds like my wife.
I've got a Virus B and a Freqbox and would love to get this kind of thing going, could you recommend any alternatives to the mpu-101? They seem to be quite hard to find... thanks :)
@Duarfunk - Kenton electronics makes several midi-to-cv converters. Also check out the Encore Expressionist and any of the Doepfer models. You should be able to find one on ebay at most any given time. I hope that helps!
this is really cool..i recently became very interested in looping and using moogerfooger equipment. i have a ring modulator and am considering purchasing either a murf, freqbox or low pass filter next. any suggestions?
The drums are from the Sony "Weak As Fuck" drum loop library. Sound designers courageously hired some of Jerry's kids to play percussion. Unfortunatley the kids were unable to grip a drumstick for any extended period of time. Engineers were able to however record some sounds when a shipment of electric wheelchairs fell off the Ryder truck. The parents threatened a lawsuit but later dropped it when they were all promised a guest appearance on the Labor Day telethon.
Hey, I totally get tweaking. That's where ideas come from. If this is a piece/song (which I don't think it is) it doesn't work. When screwing around take the snippets you like. I found the snippet I liked. Thanks for the demo, but I mention the ONLY part I liked and would move on with. I do this with friends and they give me the same feedback (critique). I hope you don't take my comment negatively, but if you did let me know. I'll adjust my tude accordingly. Nice, movement title :P
very creative use of the virus as a gate man. I dig I dig. You're employing the MIDI-CV bc you are sequencing off a computer I assume? Very cool. I see you are also getting a bit of hair off of the drive on the foogers as well, but most of the grit is from the Vox?
How well does the osc track on the freq box? I'm a bassist and I've been thinking about coming up on one of these but getting the grace notes to track is always a pain.
I am actually using an old roland MC-50 to sequence stuff since its much easier to use for these demonstrations.
The Freqbox is not really designed to track pitch like the Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro-Synth. Its killer though when you put it in the sync mode. You can mix in that synced oscillator sound with your original tone and you should be able to come up with something pretty fat. Most of the grit is coming from the Vox. I now use a Damage Control Demonizer. It rocks!
I agree--they are expensive. I had to sell some vintage analog synths awhile back and I was able to pick up the pedals. i would love to have the Moogerfooger Analog Delay but $700 for a 1 second delay pedal is insane! however - if I win the lottery I'll buy it along with a Voyager, Little Phatty, and...etc!
hey man cool shit but i dont understand... why are you using a midi-to-cv converter? i looked it up what it was but i still dont get why you need it for the moogerfooger stuff...
From what i understand, if you would stick the guitar straight through the Virus on its own, it would just chop the sound up without changing the pitches. The midi-CV converter alters the pitches and the mooger fooger plays with the frequencies for different sounds. Someone correct me if im wrong!
Hi. The Moogerfooger stuff has inputs in the back for control voltage expression pedals. The conventional way to use them is to plug the pedal into the frequency input on the lowpass filter. That way you can get a "wah" effect. You can also plug the lfo out of the ring modulator into the another Moogerfooger and modulate it that way. Its all done with control voltages. My midi-to-cv converter lets me use midi to control the various parameters. I'mm running out of space here..
i hate the "word limit" thing! So now I can write a pattern on my sequencer to control things rhythmically. Would it help if I posted a quick "how-to" video showing exactly how I do it?
i think i understand, but it would be very awesome if you did. but just to test myself, so basically INSTEAD of an expression pedal, u rigged it up to a midi controller and wrote out a modulation pattern?
yes...with a midi-to-cv converter the lower notes on my keyboard send out a lower control voltage. The higher up you play the more voltage...so you can write a pattern that gives you not only a rhythm, but it effects whatever parameter in stepped increments.
I'd be interested in learning that part. I have the same midi to CV box and have used it just for analogue patch thru in the past...would be very interested in the sequencing side.
Is that Roland converter the one that came out around the time of the Juno-60? I may have to get one since I also have a 60 with no midi retrofit, and my 106 makes fun of it.
The Roland MPU-101 is strictly a midi-to-cv converter. The Juno-60 has a DCB connector on the back...so you need a midi-to-DCB converter. That would be the Roland MD-8. It works really well (as long as you have the DCB cable with it).
MP3? Please?

Great vid!
How do you rout the virus to the lowpass filter? Is there a way to get stereo?
I would probably do an aux send/return to and from my mixer, but then the signal would be converted to mono?
any tips?

I would suggest trying the new MidiMurf - it comes with a ton of synced filter sequences in it. It would sound cool thru the ring mod.

Excuse me for the noobie question.. but wouldnt there be alot of latency ,if you record through all those pedals to the computer sequencer?.
how would you deal with that, if say your using other parts of a song in the DAW? cool sounds your making i want to use pedals to!
nagchumpalot 3 years ago
well the pedal or effects boxes are dedicated to their purpose and so therefor designed to be very low latency so it would be fine.
