He's not "giving his back" he's in motion. The pause you see is for our viewing pleasure so we cab see the technique. He's moving his center like a rotating top, taking the opponent for a ride then dropping him off before he can adjust.
Novices approach things with an empty cup mindset, novices also have experience with other movement disciplines like sports , or even dance, novices are nit dopey 98 pound uncoordinated weaklings.
I disagree about the movies being able to pick this up. It depends on the teacher. This s about technique timing and sensitivity, al, of which can be taught. So stints a novice learns even quicker because he's not so busy trying to show his instructor ho what he's being taught relates to his art too...
@TheSubwaysurfer in bagua you don't turn for the sake of turning. seasoned fighters know not to commit fully so they can change if things don't go their way but the whole concept of bagua is change and motion. Think of the spinning top. everything it hits gets bounced of or redirected. the turning is done as a means of escape or redirectig. even if you get hit the continuous motion is supposed to keep you from taking full brunt of the force.
Good techniques but novices must practice hard or turning one's back foolishly to a seasoned opponent will be a mistake. The kick escapes are very cool.
Pa kua is one of those arts that one must practice many years before it is effective. I like the style, but honestly, will you give your oppenent your back like pa kua does so often. Its not for the novice.
@WDTripps Little pisses me off more than people -especially Bagua people- that think Bagua fighting involves turning your back to your opponent! Never ever do it! Bagua seeks the advantageous position, to then be able to take him out while keeping oneself somewhat safe. Shifting direction side to side to blind-side the opponent is a main tactic. Once you're on his back side and got a good grip around his neck, THEN you can spin to take him down -or to break his back!
@piaten There are plenty of motions that you give your back, yet by doing so in your actions your opponents back is also given, miss the timing and youll get corn holed. That is why its not for the novice.
@WDTripps Certainly not for the novise! Spinning is usually applied at touch, in which case the maneuvre should always leave the opponent in a weaker position than yourself. Turning your back to an opponent who is balanced and correctly angled is obviously suicide. Against several opponents some of them may be able to sneak around to your back, but you should never actively seek that position! If however they jump you from all sides, it's sometimes a good idea to spin them off, or spin out of it
