How fast can those DMUs go? They are planning to use those DMUs on the eBART extension from Bay Point to Antioch. They should be using DMUs for Caltrain and ACE as well.
@Tremolux59: The Siemens Desiro DMU's have top speeds from 120 km/h to 160 km/h (70-100 mph) depending on the model and design, but when I rode it, it felt like the Sprinter operates them at 50 mph max?
@cchan006 50 mph was probably the max speed the track can safely handle. Don't forget most of the pax rail in this country runs on freight tracks. Pax rail done right has trackage suitable for higher speeds with gradual curves, grade separation, shallow turnouts and passing tracks. The whole idea is to keep the speed of the train up. We'll probably never see it in the US.
That's how they ran when they were the San Diegan's under Amtrak, except with an F40 PH, that was until the renaming to Pacific Surfliners, new equipment and extension of service all the way to SLO.
@Deathcult82 yes the Desito in Germany also runs with 2 units (also sometimes 2 or 3 times this unit), and also without side mirrors. Also different are the lower lights: here we got 2 white and 2 red instead of 4 white with 2 changing to red light.
