@eurasianchica I do keep the filter but i do not need it. My primary biological filtration occurs with the plants and the soil/substrate. The "quick" filter attached to the powerhead just helps with the larger particles. I never run carbon because it kills the dissolved organic carbon in the water. For me, the primary purpose for my powerhead is to move the water around and oxygenate it via surface agitation to keep it from getting stagnant, etc... And the rainbows love the current too.. lol
Thanks for the comments! I have a nice list of plants, but sometimes they are hard to find at the LFS and I have to order them. I just pick up some Anacharis which is my alternate for Hornwort as a fast grower. I have that rooting and floating. I also added some Water Sprite as a floater and with the duckweed I should be set for fast growers. On the nicer side, I got 3 Anubias nana and 2 java fern. Eventually i want only the anubias, java fern, java moss and the red root floaters.
If you poke your substrate and into the soil once or twice a day until you get some stems and the start actively growing you should be fine though. =]
You'll want a LOT more stem plants though and I'd get some quickly.
I say this is b/c stem plants like Water Sprite, Ludwigia, Creeping Jenny, and Bacopa suck up ammonia and nitrite so they help detoxify your tank where slow growers like moss and root growers like crypts don't.
They also aerate the soil which is REALLY important b/c if your tank goes anaerobic you're screwed. :[ My sister's went anaerobic because she didn't have Malaysian Trumpet snails and her stems weren't actively growing. :[
The Java moss won't really suck anything up as moss is a slow-growing plant. I mean it will but not a significant amount.
Could it be Ludwigia Natans? =]
I LOVE your drift wood and rocks! I'm setting up two walstad tanks a 2.5 gallon and a 5 gallon. I wish I could find some cheap small drift wood (I really want the tanins and drift wood is gorgeous) but I don't know where to find any LFS in DC as I'm new to the area.
I'm jealous of your pond.

Do you have a filter on the tank? And if not does it have problems with stagnant water?

@eurasianchica nevermind, I saw the filter in the next episode.
