ithe use of arpegiator is the only thing that keeps this thing plausible for piano like key roll oh and a key or swartznator max for live plug in. I think as far as launching live clips and midi modulation its great i can imagine sweeps and transposing bends but not piano.Id change name no piano involved.
Whats the point of this instrument. Much rather have a proper piano. Even though I don't play myself we do have 2 electric pianos in the house that my daughter and husband play... Sounds much better too!
How does it read the presence of your hands? Can it be triggered by motion from machines, etc? I could see some pretty cool things being done with similar technology and random inputs from movements of people and objects around it in the environment.
I wouldn't use this in a studio or as an instrument, but as a live-act midi control surface it may be actually pretty good. 3 sets of 8 midi signals could be useful. For example: 1st set would be controlling singal modulation, 2 set would be controlling effects (signal distortion, phaser, unison, echo, reverb, etc.), 3 set would control a simple 8-pad drum machine/sampler/loop player). Make it affordable/cheap and you will have a winning product for the beginner/semi-pro market. Cheers! :)
This looks like the coolest instrument since the chapman stick. I am a composer producer and multi-instrumentalist and this look to be an amazing and useful interface. Lots of possibilities can't wait to get my hands on it.
Seems like just another controller and a pretty cumbersome one at that. Although it may look cool, I doubt it has the 'granularity' that musicians need and there are plenty of controllers out there that do. I'm sure it'll have its place but it'll be a limited one.
I'm MUCH more interested in a similar type device which makes instant sounds. I'd like to see an actual demonstration video of this with the same (but easier) functionality of a real piano. This video didn't impress me much, but it would if you played Fur Elise or something more complex and melodic instead of a simple tune.
the only problem here apart from the obvious lack of tactile response is the lack of any on device visual feedback ...im not sure how feasible it would be but it would be awesome if you could integrate maybe a grid of red leds on it just so you can tell where your hands are maybe with a colour fade or brightness fade if its distance/velocity sensitive
i didnt meen to come off negative, its only that i'm betting you need to program all the midi messages, which again means it´s just a big controller limited to 24 signals, that take up both your arms. Real musicians kind of need to be able to do as much as possible with the ten fingers we have. I could be wrong, but imo your video demonstrates a big fancy hunk a junk regarding actual usability in music performance. Just seems kinda gimmicky. Feel free to prove me wrong!
i believe the AirPiano will be interesting for different kinds of musicians, but of course not all. The advantages i see are first the user experience which is fun and magical and could also appeal beginners (unlike other instruments which are more complicated to start with), second is the performance element for DJs, a controller that lets you get a bit away from the screen and be in motion, and third the experimental possibilities by arranging the matrix however you want.
he didn't say it wasn't cool. it is rather useless in respect to all the other technology you can use...its not practical, its cool piece of technology tho.
Very funny !! Looks like he just rehearsed the hand movements to the song and performed it... i'd like to see the ableton file move with his hand movements. Also the air piano looks like a 1by4 with some plastic on top and a fake cable attached... nice try wise guy.
this is amazing, i love it. how do you know which keys youre touching though? im guessing its somewhere in the front or do you just know once you practice?
There are 8 keys horizontal times 3 keys vertical. You will learn the position of the 24 keys very fast as you practice. Additionally, there are LEDs on the board that provide visual feedback.
So what are we to conclude from your wonderful one word of wonder?
Are you displaying your extreme observational skills in spotting the link between this and a Theremin? If not, then what can one conclude other than your are implying this is like a Theremin, in which case maoristereo's comment was a quite reasonable response to yours.
If your so appalled by being misinterpreted then how about making your statements a little clearer in the first place?
Oh I see, your observation makes perfect sense. Were you trying to save on time then? Or just trying not to wear down your keyboard too much by over typing? Maybe your fingers were tired?
You say he criticised you for no reason? Is that what really happened? Wasn't he innocently trying to correct what he thought was a basic error?
Lastly, please don't swear at me, surely we can resolve our differences without the need to descend to obscenities. The English language is so much better than that.
It's just a piece of wood, people. I mean, seriously?

If you call this a piano people will expect an actual musical instrument as opposed to a cool midi controller.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Yes i knew that, thank you for fixing my comment, which wasn't broken in the first place.
Your comment has managed to salvage this resounding failure that is the one word "Theremin" i used in my first comment.
Your amazing ability to read between the lines of ONE WORD to interpret that i have no idea what this video is about simply astounds me.
THANK YOU

I was making the observation that the instrument makes sound without being touched, just like a theramin.
Im not appaled at being misinterpreted, but I do hate so idiots who assume things and feel the need to critique me for no reason whatsoever.
Maybe you should shut the fuck up and let this puppy go?

My only problems with this video are really quite trivial:
-Better loops/instrument patches.
