Agreed ... a curve probably wasn't required on this shot. Going rail first is also another option here. Although, the point of the video is still good ... it is relatively easy to curve the CB a controlled and small amount when necessary.
haven't really tried by purpose but i've noticed that a masse can be done with topspin and elevated cue, or atleast it has think that's what has happened to me a few times..? going to try it next time i play pool
Most coin-operated "bar boxes" use a strong magnet in the return chute to pull the cue ball down an alternative path. The cue ball for these tables is made with embedded pieces or filings of metal that is attracted to the magnet.
Other approaches include using a slightly heavier and/or slightly large cue ball to allow separation mechanically.
who is giving this 3stars? these are very useful shots for beginners. if you are bagging on this because you are so damn good at pool why are you watching tutorials??
Why do pool players always call these shots massé-shots, it's a swerve. The cueball slides on the cloth because it encounters more friction on the one side, it doesn't grab; so it's not a massé but a swerve shot. Massé either grabs the cloth or reduces the speed by spin, but swerve shots are a special effect because they slide for reasons that have to do with rollin(back) to the side with least friction.
You can play swerveshots elevating your cue to the sky, and you can play massé shots with less elevation, it's about what makes the white go around the ball. In the case of a massé shot it's the ball pushing into the cloth, in the case of a swerve it's a case of the white taking the easiest way through the cloth.
The camera angle is a little deceiving. There was not clear shot (without maybe going rail first with running English ... but then it would be tough to "hold" the cue ball if required for the next shot).
where is the massé?:) it is a simple shot.

Dear Dr. Thank you for you prompt response. i was always wondering how it worked and was not able to concentrate on the game.
Now that i know i think i can play better.

I'm glad you mind will now be on the game instead of the ball-return mechanism. :)
Get your mind out of the gutter. :)

what is the mehanism

it did nothing.

You're right ... the curve probably wasn't necessary for this shot, but the principle is still valid.

I'm not sure why some people don't like this video. I hope they let us know. Maybe they think it is too basic and too short.
Thanks,
Dr. Dave

hi nice video!!!
i have a question, where do you hit the white ball? on the top and a bit left?
mail back thx!!

In this shot, I used bottom-left English ... hitting the CB low and to the left to get a curve to the left.

A masse shot is just a swerve shot with a lot more cue elevation.
