i think you were a scientist in another life...have you ever tried kosher salt? I am going to give that a try. I don't think you ruined any of those silk - it just changed the character :-)
I have tried. It did not make much difference. Maybe I need to study more and try more with Kosher salt. From what I know now, the structure, dryness and size of salt make the pattern different. Please let me know your result.

How about sea salt?
I've done painting with salt before, only with watercolor paintings on paper--the effects were different every time!

Most salt are from sea anyway. It is the size that matters.
It can be used in watercolor or Chinese painting, anything that has a lot of water.
