First of all the trend is not only religious. Everything is getting extremer these days. Just look at topics as 'youth culture', 'criminality', 'commercials' etc. I think the subject rather than "running back to safety" as you states it, is about group mentallity. People in a 'group' tends to be pairtial for the 'cause' of the group, meaning that they tend to listen mostly to information that supports the 'cause' (so: more overall information -> more extreme).
@3ncoctmebreu Definitely a good point, and it's something that should be noticed. Herd mentality is herd mentality, no matter how special one thinks their herd is.
While everyone may find comfort in something familiar (because they expect the same outcome,) some enjoy experiencing new things. But as you pointed out, it may just be instinct vs. intellect. Intelligently, we are delighted by an unexpected outcome (a new joke which a punch line we didn't see coming results in laughter.) However, some people will not use intelligence in place of instinct, and it's in this mode we seek shelter.
Off note: Most information we're bombarded with is Bullshit.
On a completely separate note than the one I previously mentioned, what you said about our continuous gain of knowledge brings my mind back to a favorite verse of mine from the song 'Shaping the Masterpiece' by Born of Osiris...
I clearly see why there's no answers for me
Cuz I'm falling asleep at the wheel of discovery
Chasing a dream that outruns every being
You look soon enough, but you'll never start seeing.
Making a lot of sense here. This gives me heaps to think about. And you're right, there are many of them that aren't stupid, but psychologically they revert to the most comfortable thing they can think of. In their religions, they are given 'saviors' that seem to be comforting characters which is why people still cling to religion even though they have a wealth of information to keep them away.
I think it's part of the post-modern condition -- everything's relative, human's interaction with machines, distance and time have been reduced, we're as cynical as we've ever been about human potential and yet we want a simple answer. Going backward seems so comforting.
@TheDystopiaInside Good point. We do always want the simple answer. The problem is that the answer is rarely ever simple.
You know, you reminded me of a line that has always humored me, though I used to hear it in a different context: "We've all come out of the hole, only to spend the rest of our lives trying to get back in."
religion, in one form or another, will always be an aspect of human cultures. its natural to fear the unknown to some degree. as you say, life is full of unknowns. religion offers answers, or claims it does, and the temptation to bite that hook, especially where there is so much social reinforcement, must be hard for many to resist.
Thanks for this vid. It help me bring myself back down to earth. I agree, that I fallinto that same trap of thinking theists are stupid, and even call them that.
Not just because I really do think they are stupid, since they still supoort their belief regardless of all the info that's out there for free (I'll admit that). But mainly it's because when I see attrocities and animosities brought on by and due to their religions, that's what drives my impatience with these people.
@Domzdream Hey, don't feel bad. I do the same thing. :p
It just helps every now and then to get some perspective and realize what's really going on. Ignorance is the problem, and we have to combat it. but we are also dealing with our own natures, and that's always been a constant struggle in the human condition.

That's true in more ways than one.
