Certain roms have this feature so take a look at cyanogen roms but make sure that you have read thoroughly what is involved in flashing custom roms. The underlying rooting process is a risk u take

hey i got the Magic a few days ago, it only flashes white when the phone rings, how can i get it to flash for different notifications and alerts, or even change the color of the light

Yes you are absolutely correct. A new message waiting will be indicated by the glowing trackball. It is not as rapid a blink as during the ring of a phone call (really meant to get your attention), it is just a gentle reminder to check your messages.
