Just checked. The 1964 Toyopet Crown, 35 miles to the gallon. 1964! Ancient technology! 35 miles to the gallon, largish car. And nearly 50 years, an oil crisis, the Kyoto protocal etc. later, the Prius; the best the world can offer in 2011, and it only gets 41mpg? -with an electric ancillary motor! Something odd about that.
They are too expensive. I have owned a 1.6 Fiesta for 2 years and average 46MPG which includes mainly town traffic jams and some motorway and its quick and cost nothing near as much as these cars. I would only consider one if the price came right down.

please convince me how a prius is better than my 10-plate bmw 318d in m-sport spec? is it cheaper? not much. mine is better built, 50+ mpg, better ride (even with m-sport suspension), faster, more stylish (opinions differ i know), better spec, and just the better all round similarly sized vehicle. in fact, any decent modern tdi saloon with a nice spec is the better buy, and will do better mpg all day
1st- you cannot compare a 1.6 with a 1.3, and if you want to drive green you would use the econ driving on honda and you cannot compare how the people look the cars, prius has more time on the market so obviously it is more popular, some aspects that cannot be compared.

@masterobed Wrong, the Prius was first. It was built in 1997. However the Insight was the first hybrid to come to North America (1999). Neither was a copy of the other, since hybrid technology has been around since the late 1800s. Nevermind the fact that Toyota's HSD system is much more advanced then Honda's IMA system.
It's cool man, but confusing how someone's life experience is somehow wrong. Did I mention I live in Northwestern Washington in the mountains, and YES $20 is not a FULL tank but does get me 500 miles, cause out here with all the downhills, my consumption monitor shows a consistent average of 58 MPG. But that poor little truck only got me 12MPG. If this is still confusing, please ask me some questions before assuming things and I will gladly clarify. Just trying to put out good info to help. :)

Now I have $100 ins $350 loan (cause my credit is 700+) and spend $40 dollars a month in fuel. That's right $40. Which is 2 tanks of gas or 1000 miles. That's $340 in my pocket.Plus a ten year warranty, four doors and a trunk. So in a nutshell what I am saying is some people by Prius cause they are SMART! Just sayin

@tonakis68 Top speed limiter what happened when you hit 110 did youre fuel shut of or did youre RPM range didnt go farther than 5000RPM you should try changing youre ECU and installing new camshafts and headers or maybe a sweet turbo oh and a new cold air intake new fuel rail high floow fuel pump port polished heads and also blue printed block you would gain some 200 or 300 or 400 hp depends on what youre engine is capable of and the qualaty of the parts

Nah... no point. It would actually make the car worse. I just drove it to Italy and back, through the mountains, and it didn't even do as much as stutter. Just a perfect smooth 1700 miles trip.
What WOULD be fun though is putting a powerful electric motor at all four your Nissan wheels and a light-weight battery pack that boosts it for the lower speed range so you have 100% torque at 0 mph! You only need it until you go 20 mph and flow right into the turbo's peak performance!

Road Density : 500 000 vehicles for 2000 km roads

I have an Insight and I get 52 MG (real not calculated by the computer); the car is very quiet so your noise comments are just baffling to me, and the Insight drives much better than the Prius - the only advantage the Prius has is indeed its large motor. The Insight can be anemic going uphill.

@masterobed Wrong, the Prius was first. It was built in 1997. However the Insight was the first hybrid to come to North America (1999). Neither was a copy of the other, since hybrid technology has been around since the late 1800s. Nevermind the fact that Toyota's HSD system is much more advanced then Honda's IMA system.

It's cool man, but confusing how someone's life experience is somehow wrong. Did I mention I live in Northwestern Washington in the mountains, and YES $20 is not a FULL tank but does get me 500 miles, cause out here with all the downhills, my consumption monitor shows a consistent average of 58 MPG. But that poor little truck only got me 12MPG. If this is still confusing, please ask me some questions before assuming things and I will gladly clarify. Just trying to put out good info to help. :)

Hybrids are a status symbol and nothing else.
Burning slightly less fuel isn't going to make up for the all the environmental damage those massive batteries caused during mining, refining, production, and disposal.
Anyone genuinely interested in saving money or the environment would already be driving a small car from the 90s that has been reliabily getting 40-50mpg for decades.

@luminaeus Hello, I used to drive a Ford Ranger 04' no warranty left, and costing $500 in fuel plus $270 loan. and $160 ins. That's $830 a month with no security and no practicality. Now I have $100 ins $350 loan (cause my credit is 700+) and spend $40 dollars a month in fuel. That's right $40. Which is 2 tanks of gas or 1000 miles. That's $340 in my pocket.Plus a ten year warranty, four doors and a trunk. So in a nutshell what I am saying is some people by Prius cause they are SMART! Just sayin

Driving 1000 miles a month in a Ford Ranger will cost $166. To burn $500 of gas in a month you have to drive 1750 city miles.+27
You fudged the insurance numbers too. The ford is cheaper to insure than the prius.
Let's see the real numbers.

Prius: $510

@tonakis68 Top speed limiter what happened when you hit 110 did youre fuel shut of or did youre RPM range didnt go farther than 5000RPM you should try changing youre ECU and installing new camshafts and headers or maybe a sweet turbo oh and a new cold air intake new fuel rail high floow fuel pump port polished heads and also blue printed block you would gain some 200 or 300 or 400 hp depends on what youre engine is capable of and the qualaty of the parts

Damn, your English is terrible. Anyway: it performs when you want it to. Setting it to power mode it has a mean kick-down. It of course doesn't mean it's a race car. Besides that it has a lot of other virtues and it would last ages longer in any road trip than your Nissan. Not that Nissan isn't a good company, but you probably messed the car up.

Nah... no point. It would actually make the car worse. I just drove it to Italy and back, through the mountains, and it didn't even do as much as stutter. Just a perfect smooth 1700 miles trip.
What WOULD be fun though is putting a powerful electric motor at all four your Nissan wheels and a light-weight battery pack that boosts it for the lower speed range so you have 100% torque at 0 mph! You only need it until you go 20 mph and flow right into the turbo's peak performance!
