  • The fuck you put music over his patter -____-

  • A LEGEND AT WORK!

  • He does this perfectly. I do magic myself, and I know every move this guy does. But I can't see at all when he does them. They look perfectly natural.

  • I can not figure this guy out whatsoever.

  • @javimirage You are mistaken sir. This was not very good and the plinky plonky piano music was dreadful. If you watch artists such as Paul Daniels, Chris Angel and David Blaine you will see they are much better.

  • I like this. Johnny Paul's cups and balls routine is unique also!

  • what's the song called? it says it's erroll garner, but could you tell me the title? :) thank you!

  • @MadamePetrarca haha thank you. i found out. it's 'misty'.

  • I knew the famous Kaps Subtlety was good, but I never thought how good until I saw him use it so brazenly just now.

  • Comment removed

  • @quintopia You still haven't seen him use it. the Kaps subtley was more for coin work than anything and isn't well suited for other objects. The Kaps or as it is often called now the Malini, Vernon, Kaps subtley is not used in this routine at all.

  • @RS1963 I think I meant to write Ramsey subtlety. Either way, it looks really good.

  • @quintopia Ah well that would make sense then.

  • Can somebody tell me who is playing this long version of the song "Misty" ?

    Thanks.

  • @GaryOuellet The music is TERRIBLE. It sounds out of tune and stops and starts, really slows down and loses its way in random notes etc. It RUINED the routine, I would have preferred to hear Bram Bongers patter.

  • Comment removed

  • @RS1963 Yes, thanks for agreeing with me. This CRAP music totally ruined this clip. It wasn't even played on an in tune piano.

  • @GaryOuellet oh it's 'misty'! haha i was looking for the title :) the description says it's by erroll garner.

  • 5:17 his right hand !!

  • @MsPwninG Yes you are right, he just did a ball vanish into his left hand, and really had the ball in his right. He then brazenly turns a cup mouth up and drops the ball in there, you can see it! This is not magic at all it's terrible! All these people saying this guy is brilliant are quite wrong.

Also, I HATE that music on the plonky planky old piano. I'd get a sledgehammer and SMASH the piano to shut the music up, HAHA.

  • check 5:17 his right hand ;)

  • awesome :)

  • SHEER PERFECTION FROM THE GREATEST PERFORMER IN MAGICAL HISTORY!

How 2 people have given this clip the thumbs down defies belief.

Yes of course Fred would normally have pattered to this effect but it's aimed at magicians - hence there's quite a bit of 'jazzing' within the routine.

I perform/prefer Ken Brooke's routine - but words cannot convey Fred Kaps ability demonstrating this magical classic.

  • Superb is not a good enough word but close to it! WOW!

  • who plays Misty ? both performances are stunning

  • who plays Misty on the piano that too is genius both are stunning

  • This is an awesome routine. Its a masterful, very well thought of sequence. Movements and palming were minimized. After watching many times, I learned the routine and performs them myself. In fact, I will be doing this routine next month for close-up competition. I change some parts, especially the last part to fit my style. If you want to see my version of this routine, search cups and balls fred kaps

  • you know when I decided to get into magic I just didn't want to do tricks but I wanted to be a true student of the art. I wanted to know the greats who paved the way and what a wise choice because Fred Kaps is truly awesome. I have caught a few things he did but i won't ell. This is just to beautiful to screw it up by telling people look here and look there. Simply enjoy the magic and beauty that it is.

  • @Hardeen31 At 5:21 he gets the first lemon from his pocket and loads it in at 5:29 . At 5:43 he gets the second lemon from his pocket and loads it in at 5:48 . 5:56 At he gets the third lemon from his pocket and loads it in at 6:02 . Hegets the tomato at 6.23 fumbling in his pocket with his left hand loads in the tomato at 6.28 under misdirection of the lemons appearing.

This was really quite a lame perfomance, I saw it all on the first viewing.

  • @heelfan1234 Hey asshole, let people enjoy the magic.

  • @JorickHorn Don't worry it's mostly magic students or magicians viewing these vids. laymen aren't going to get involved in the technical stuff. They can watch the vid without reading the comments and even if a laymen read my comments he won't understand them. If you do the C&B yourself, you should be interested in not only being entertained by Kapps but also learning from his technique, which you can't do if you don't understand the routine. So just regard it as a teach-in :)

  • @heelfan1234 Wow, someone has a swelled head doesn't he?

  • @pbug If you want me to explain any part of the routine for you, feel free to ask! Actually I don't think this is a brilliant routine as set to music. The finals were slick but telegraphed, & in the initial phases, with no patter, it's not always possible to understand clearly or remember where the ball is "supposed to be" especially from a lay perspective. So when it turns up somewhere else, the wow factor is dampened. The routine requires more concentration than modern day audiences will give.

  • @heelfan1234 Sorry to dissagree with you. This was filmed in Southern Frnce while Fred Kaps was visiting a friend (Phillipe Fialho) .Yes there were few flashes, but he performed the routine for friends. The routine is ingenious and laid the way for many new magicians to do more (best example is Latimer's routine which is very strongly influenced by this one).Modern time audience is blown away by this routine(show it to someone).Fred is the only magician ever to win Grand Prix FISM three times

  • @stobysorrento I'd lay the same criticism on Latimer's routine. It's not always obvious where the ball is *supposed* to be or what is supposed to be happening. FISM competition is judged by judges who are magicians themselves. They judge on 6 categories only one of which is entertainment value. Since they are not lay people they can't judge even that from a layman stance. The only thing that matters from an audience perspective is entertainment. Technique/originality etc is irrelevant,

  • @heelfan1234 Cups&Balls have being my passions for years.I've studied the subject from all sides and I red viewed or owned almost everithing that hit the market last 20years.This routine is one of the most original and I really woud've liked to see it with the original patter which knowing Fred's abillity to entertain would've made it a hit.Try to watch Tommy Wonder C&B with no patter and you'll hate it.With it it's one of the best.Today's audience is more aware of tricks don't underestimate it!

  • @stobysorrento I agree, the orginal patter was needed. This so-called "music" was HORRIBLE and lost its way in random notes. It was a SIN to remove the commentary of Mr Bongers, even though some of the routine was a bit naff.

  • @heelfan1234 Couldn't agreemore. I had a chance to talk to few people who knew Fred and none of them remembers seen him perform Cups&Balls. I wonder if he developed this routine for self satisfaction or just to fool his friends. I'll probably try to find some info from people who'd know more (like Pete Biro). Yes routine have some flaws and it is expected to and the music is pathehic at best.

  • @stobysorrento There were many things that Fred's friends don't remember seeing him perform since he often wouldn't do certain things for everyone. I agree the C&B's seen here may have been designed for mostly magicians. Fred had a vast catalog of magic that he could do. It was larger than most magicians at that time. Pete Biro may have seen him do this in person. I'm not sure of that however. I know Pete also has this clip on his site

  • ummm? lol

  • Some magicians have said that using sponge balls for the cups and balls is not a good idea since the balls are not solid. Indeed, the use of sponge balls with the cups and balls has fallen out of favor of late. It used to be quite common. Kaps made it work, and work like a miracle. The balls completely fill the cups. It looks so impossible! Strong performance. Excellent misdirection. Beautiful routining. Few weak spots. This is a wonderful, brilliant cups and balls routine!

  • stunning, forever genius

  • smooth

  • Masterful!

  • Unreal.

  • I've watched it three times. Unfrigging believable!

  • best of all!!!!!!!!

  • I understand the routines of great magicans...but this one i don't understand

  • Pura magia.

  • at 2:06 you can already see all three balls in the cup

  • @supersamuririce You can not. Maybe you can see one but you could not see all three at that moment. That is a fact.

  • damn him, it's original from beginning to end. not like the traditional cups and balls at all, except in effect. fred, if you can read this from where you are: chapeau!

  • My brains were kicked in the balls. This is the best cups and balls routine I've ever seen.

  • UNBELIEVABLE!

  • O_O wow !

  • hi everybody , where can i get the explanation of this routine ?? thanks

  • @anthonykaia

Fred Kaps is performing this routine great but it is not dificult to figure out the moves. Sponge balls can be loaded or stealed the same way as the pea in Three Shell Game. Fred starts the routine with two balls in cup #1 and one ball in cup #2. If you'd still have dificulties to figure out some moves, let me know and I'll send you a copy of my notes. It is not by chance they call him "The Great Fred Kaps"

  • @stobysorrento Hi, just wondering if you still have your notes on this routine. I am looking to learn a cups and balls routine and trying to decide between this (or something close to it) and Lavand's Breadcrumbs... If you have a copy I would love to take a look. Thanks!!!

  • @papagersh Hi, Just searched my computer for 25 min and can't find my notes. I believe the routine is available on Pete Biro's website. If you can't find it let me know and I'll rewrite it for you

  • @papagersh If you can't work out this routine just by watching it a few times, you don't deserve to be performing it! Why would you need notes if you've any experience in magic!

  • this is a perfect example of what happens when one loves to practice, practice, practice and then perform. Fred we miss you.

  • Pure class,,,, pure inspiration,

  • This was the greatest cups and balls routine I have seen yet. I can figure most of them out, but Kaps completely fooled me.

  • @JorickHorn Don't worry, if you look at my other comment I exposed all of the loads for you. He used the loaded lift at 6:16 to 6:18 to show the cups empty. The lemons were already in, he held them up with his pinky finger right hand.

I got all this first time through, but then I perform the effect and am very experienced in it so don't worry if you didn't pick it!

  • @heelfan1234 I perform the Cups and Balls myself. As a magician, I tend to be good at picking up on most of these routines, so when a better magician is able to completely fool me, I'm very excited. I don't want to know how it's done. It's a magical experience, not a puzzle. You're doing it wrong.

  • @heelfan1234 experienced at what? I bet it isn't 'tact and diplomacy'. Wonder if you are a member of IBM either? Hmmmmm.....

  • @pbug Yes I am a member of the IBM actually ... British Ring 25. But I'm a member just for business purposes. Some parts of the organisation are very old fashioned.

  • Simply ingenious!! Thanks for posting!

  • I appreciate what you have to say, but I sense this is not a silent routine. The music may have been added to the video, rather than during the original performance. I think studying the whole routine would be more useful. Tommy Wonder - and I think Mr. Kaps would agree - argued that close-up should never be performed silently because the performer loses a powerful tool for connecting with the audience.

  • Whoa ...master at work.

  • breathtaking. Thanks so much for posting this...

  • Great and Great!

  • Superb ! And I like the fact that the accompanying music is "Misty" by Erroll Garner and not some bullshit techno nonsense like they do these days...

  • Superb magic

  • wow...great

  • Brilliant!
