  • Does anyone know how to turn off the similar Motionflow for Sony Bravia?

  • dear God, Thank you for this. I was going to return my television if I didn't find this video.

  • It still looks like a soap opera in your tv. I think I'm just going to avoid HD TVs. I haven't been impressed with Blue Rays either for the same reason.

  • I like the soap opera effect it

  • i have a question , 2 tvs ,one with 200 hz cm and the other with 400hz cmr (all other feautures are identical) will look the same with this option turned off ? and which one do u recommend , 200hz or 400hz , for movies and games , and thank u

  • I am thinking you are asking about a Plasma tv. In that case go for higher hz. However, keep in mind that LED tvs are recommended if you want to save your utility expenses and picture quality is much better.

  • thx but had 2 wait for over half the video for u to explain the solution

  • Thank you so much!!!!!

  • if u put it off the picture is not so smooth. but yeah the soap opera effect is annoying

  • Easy guide at xcorrect com

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was this close to return my brand new tv.

  • Panasonic's Blur Reduction creates kind of a smoother picture, but still keeps the movie look. I personally tried motion interpolation on my computer, and there was just too many artifacts with it.

I guess Blur Reduction is motion interpolation without the soap opera effect. It's not so smooth, that it looks like it was shot on a camcorder.

  • Thank you! I can't believe that when I googled Hi Def TV "soap opera effect" I actually got so many hits! It was so annoying, I was ready to pull out my old TV. Now I just have to figure out how to smooth out the picture a little more without the "auto motion" off.

  • Only we the chosen "few" are able to see this effect, it would seem ;-)

Thank you - nice to know that there are solutions to avoid this v. annoying effect that makes movies look artificial. Why haven't they come up with a better technical solution yet, since it IS nice to avoid the judder as well and have smooth motion.

As far as I know all the brands with high Hz have this problem to some degree,

What happ. to scanning backlight? Wasn't that supposed to make movement look more smooth?

  • i agree

i hate this effect. it feels like i'm watching a doc. of someone shooting a camera behind the scenes, it does not feel very theater like

i tried to get used to it, but I just can't. Whether it's because I grew up with movies that feels like a theater, idk, but man, i hate it. its ok watching this effect on a sports channel or whatever, but on simple movies, everything looks fake!

  • I actually like that effect. More lifelike.

  • I appreciate watching movies I've seen a hundred times with the effect on. It's like watching a whole new movie. I watched back to the future and the shit looked like a brand new movie.

  • Omg.

    Two words. Thank. You.

I went over my friends house, and I was wondering about that effect, and just now, this movie has this.

  • I hated that about my new TV, The movies lost all their "atmosphere" . I couldn't enjoy them, because the entire time I'm obsessing about how it looks so wrong. No one else in my family notices it. But I have to turn off the auto motion plus when they aren't looking in order to enjoy a movie. Movies are filmed at 24 frames per second, they should be VIEWED at 24 frames per second.

  • Yes I noticed that too when shopping around for a tv. The salesman even told me that you cannot turn that feature off. I was dissapointed and couldn't believe it. Thank god for finding this video after searching around for people with a similar problem. I cant believe that a lot of people like this effect.

  • @mikkister

    im so with you

I hate these soap opera effects as well

It feels like I'm watching a behind the scene movie rather than the actual movie

also, all the computer generated scenes looks super fake, thanks to this effect! it seems like its so clear, its exposing all the fakeness of the cg, yknow what i'm saying?

  • I like the soap opera effect am I the only one????

  • has any one else watched 2012 with the motion thing on in the tv??? lol looks soooo gay... i had to turn it off

  • Oh thank you!!!!!!! My boyfriend just bought this TV and watching it has been driving me insane, like lterally insane. Films dont looke like films anymore - I have been going mental, it looks like tape! He doesnt notice it and I dont understand how he doesnt!! Im praying he lets me change these settings coz I cant watch movies on it, I just cant!

    Pray for me :)

  • @jkwarrener

So what happened? Did you survive? ;-)

I can't believe some people are unable to see this weird effect - very annoying once you notice it.

It will ruin any film, making it look like it was shot on a cheap Video-8 system.

  • thankkkkk youuuuuuuuu

  • Same thing happened to me. I almost returned the TV until I finally figured out to turn off the auto motion. People thought I was crazy....they couldn't understand what I was talking about and it drove me nuts!

BTW...turn back on the auto motion for Video Games ;)

  • You people who actually like the Soap Opera Effect are idiots! It ruins the movie, acting, and special effects. Those of you who don't notice a difference at all are idiots as well! Thank god for people like myself!

  • guys are we talking about that blury effect you get when the picture is complex? or just speed? I don't have the automotion setting, but I do have true motion, and I think it's kinda the same with the crapy blury effect

  • @cocofuria Trumotion is LG's technology for making the picture more smooth. It makes the image more smooth, and less stuttering (because of the original 50/60 hz image) but that also makes it more Soap opera / handheld camera / fast moving picture - like. So, yes it is the same.

  • @cocofuria

No, not the blurry or judder effect or lack of smoothness!

This Soap Opera effect makes even the most expensive and normally awesome Hollywood film look like it was shot with a really cheap handheld video camera, bec. of all the artificial frames that are

interpolated and inserted in between the real frames to create a more smooth and judder free motion.

So does anyone know if this SO-effect is even worse on the high frame rate TV's like 240 Hz ( 200 Hz here in Europe) and above?

  • I dont know why you would want to turn that off??? you shouldn't have bought that nice of a tv if you wanted to view films the old school way, you shouldve bought the tv that cost half the price so you would not have had to tinker with it.

  • @wadu18

Nonsense - obviously you have no real clue what the problem is.

Not much gained if it ruins a great movie with a really cheap look, is there?

This function works fairly well for some types of programs ( normal TV , sports ... ),

but not for movies shot in 24 fps.

  • Thank you so much. You saved Christmas!

  • Yea! THANK YOU! This was so annoying! I've had this problem for a very long time, but everyone I talk to has absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. Then I watched Good Will Hunting with my family, and they all agree with me! Perhaps it's a genetic thing. It feels like you're watching them film the movie. It's hard to pay attention to the emotion of the characters, because it all feels like poor acting. Special effects look ridiculous.

  • Man, my parents just bought a new TV and were watching Avatar. It looked like it was shot with a home camera. So basicly, if you reduce the HZ on home camera video, will it look like professional footage?

  • Why do they manufactorers do this? Most people will never know how to fix it.

  • Thanks for posting this. It saved me a ton of time and hassle. I have a Samsung 46 in. LCd and as soon as I plugged the TV in I felt like everything looked like a soap opera. I even tried to get Best Buy to take the tv back. This post helped me fix my picture.

  • I noticed the same thing on our new Vizio LCD, and I even said to my boyfriend "It looks like the picture is sped up, it looks like a soap opera!" and he said I was just insane and he didn't see anything different, and told me not to mess with the settings. Well luckily I figured it out and went to the settings and fixed it while he's not here, and if he didn't notice the effect before, he won't notice that it's gone now ;)

  • @KuramasLolita

My wife still does not understand what I am talking about. So, you are not the only one.

  • Thanks!

  • on a serious note.. Just put your "Auto motion plus" to "CLEAR". Picture looks really nice and no more jittery picture with soap opera effect.

  • you explained it to your "WATCH" and your watch is right there?? hhahah

  • Is it ironic that the movie playing on his tv, 2012, was shot on a Panasonic Genesis, a digital camera which tends to give movies a Soap Opera look anyway? Even when shown in theatres.

  • Is it the LCD 120hz tv's that do that "Soap Opera Effect"?

  • @Creationcreed LED 120hz and 220 hz BUT just change the Auto motion plus to clear. OR turn the game mode on. Turning game mode on will take away the soap opera effect but picture wont be as clear as it is without game mode on..

  • I think 120hz tvs do too. However, I assume those tv also should have option to change the effect.

  • @rajib1080 Recently I turned it to a mid-level, and I prefer that instead. Yes I finally got a 32' 1080p 120hz tv. It took a while to research and find the best price. This works fantastic with games. Bluray movies show up very clear, I like the soap opera look, lets say King Kong, but it can get annoying though.

  • Thanks alot!

  • @ewill40

    My Pleasure (*_*)

  • My Pleasure (*_*)

  • Dude thank you so much! I have been complaining about this and described it as a soap opera effect and nobody else saw it or understood. Like @spokmage said everyone thinks I'm just complaining for no reason. So much more enjoyable now.

  • @PickledPictures

Thanks Dude! I hate the so called "fluid, crisp motionflow" effect krapthese new hdtv's have! Its because of the increased artificial frame rate, which duplicates images. It was wasn't filmed like that so i don't want to watch it like that! Its nice to know other people don't like this effect either.

  • I am glad you have the same view as mine.

  • I hear you. It is really ironic how people get so excited with new stuff and ignore the noticeable downside.

  • Most people I know don't seem to notice, and they think I am just complaining for no reason, but it's really awful to sit through a movie when everything looks so uncinematic!

  • I bought my tv just for this effect. Most people that come over are just amazed.

  • @cbo02 I agree with u. I really think that the effect adds a lot more clarity and definition to the viewed content plus making it look much more fluid and smooth. I was amazed too when I first seen it.

  • Enjoy.

  • Thanks for the info. A friend was telling me he saw a movie on a new 60" TV and the movie looked like a reality show. Then by co-incidence 2 days later, at Walmart, I was looking at 2 LCD TV’s with the same movie and one looked fine and the other was EXACLTY like a soap opera. I was like “holy crap” this is what he was talking about. I was looking back and forth between the 2 TV’s thinking, What the hell is making it look like that. Thank God I’m not the only one seeing this.

  • @DarthHater100

No, you are not the only one.

  • Thanks dude. That soap opera effect is horrible.
