@PikachuCLS7 you can touch the plant and become unstuck its really only about as sticky as snot the biggest thing it could hold on to is maybe a small frog.
@Piranhaboy01 No, it is not getting very much light :P
I live in the Netherlands, and our summer was just like: clouds, rain, rain, wet sun, clouds....
so, not bright at all, and not very much, I think it is in the sun for 5 hours / day :-(
Any Idea how to fix that? (cheap and efficient, would love to let the solution have space for a pretty big nepenthes aswell (A) but that's not really needed for the neppy)
I want to get a pitcher plant. I live in the midwest. Usually when I get a carnivorous plant, it dies after a few weeks. I kept a Venus flytrap in the little greenhouse thing it came in and it lived a little longer but still died. Any special conditions for a pitcher plant that would keep it alive for longer?
HELP! my drosera aliciae & pinguicula unknown has been hit by frost, i left them in my greenhouse while i was away for a couple days, when i came back they were all red & black, what should i do? will they comeback next yr??? pleasee help :@
@DJSamization it all depends on how hard they got hit. if it was just the leaves, they should still have the root system and come back. if the moss froze most likely they are done for. either way, try and rescue them anyways - it's the only way to tell for sure if they survived.
@DJSamization the carnivorous bromeliad... no but I've had many other bromeliads. They all will consume insects, some better than others. Any bromeliad you find in shops are mildly carnivorous. That is, they collect water and some insects will fall in, or dead ones will, and decay. Many small animals also live and die within the pockets providing nutrients.
Would you recommend only letting the plant digest whatever it catches or should I feed it every so often, I imagine it can catch plenty on it's own. And how big would a 7-10 year old traps be? Pretty big?
@dorano103 if it's catching its own food, don't bother feeding it. it's far more enjoyable watching what gets attracted and trapped on its own. an old plant would be the same size as this one. actually this one is perhaps 4 years old. they don't get bigger, they just keep reproducing by seed.
Bulbs i use for lizards. That good for the VFT? I am a beginning cultivator and am looking to add carnivorous plants to to my current hobby list :P so far only hobby I have is reptiles lol. Again any help would be great :]
@dorano103 i would think these bulbs would assist other lamps but you can't grow it under them alone. some UV rays will help bring out the color but the plant needs good strong visible spectrum lighting to do well
@Piranhaboy01 So are we talkin like crazy bright lamp bulbs? Or reall bright fluorescent lights? And I have heard 2 differed things let me know if you know! Is I good to keep the pot in a half inch of water as long as it has drainage holes? Some people are saying leaving it in a tray of water will make it rot but 20 % humidity and 110 degrees they're gonna need a ton of cool water right?
@dorano103 the brightest you can find. there are 40 watt compact fluorescent lights that emit over 200 watt of equivalent light. i have some plants under 400 watt High Pressure Sodium lamps. as far as drainage holes. it seems to work for others but it doesn't work for me... or my plants. in your conditions, i'd definitely have my pot filled with water right up to the plant. and this water will evaporate very quickly with such heat and low humidity and will need to be replaced every second day
Dionaea muscipula is what I have recently acquired. I will be getting it within 10 days, i assume at 8ish years it will be well established and hardy. But u would love some great advice. Any help is appreciated
Ps
My climate is hot and dry. Average temp is from 80-115 depending on time of year. Should I keep out of a tank, or in one. Cuz I have a 45 gallon with a great fogger. Again any help is very good!!!!
@dorano103 the flytraps could easily live under that heat as long as it's roots are kept very wet. never grow a flytrap in a terrarium as they need to be outside or at least on a table under as bright lights you can find
@DJSamization don't worry. It will get sticky in a matter of days, and a tip by me: your plant is probably under stress, so i would say - not to feed it. In a few weeks, you can try feed your drosera aliciae.
@DJSamization just like a mechanic i need to know the species you are discussing. Some need low light and others need high light to produce mucilage and enzymes. is it a D. alicia??
@DJSamization adapt it to sunlight over a week or two either in partial shade or increasing lengths of exposure and keep the moss soaking wet. you might need to water every day in intense sun. don't get the leaves wet if you can help it, that'll allow the glue to build up. it gets washed away in frequent rainfalls. and have patience. new leaves will adapt
@Piranhaboy01 the thing is my sundew is a large clump of many smaller sundews so its a little hard so i put a tray underneath & put the water in there also it adapted a bit to sun but some of the sundews turned red & idk what to do i need help please
@DJSamization ok, you'll have no other choice but to put it in a tray of water. Once in a while, perhaps every 2 weeks, spray water over the tops of all the plants to wash minerals down and away. This will remove the glue but after growing outside, it will quickly return. they will turn red in the sun. watch for new growing leaves, they will be adapted to sunlight.
Very beautiful plant...

I've got a help request :-)
My Sundew is not producing any dew :O
(humidity problem?) the leaves close to the ground (they are like 1 CM above it tho) die everytime, and the top is making new ones like hell.
Any Idea how to fix this? it is already for like 5 months.
just as info: it just became automn
Martijnhaah 5 months ago
@Martijnhaah are you growing it in bright light? they will produce lots of soft light green leaves with no dew if they don't get enough light.

I know, I tried that, and my drosera alicae rolled for about 2 days, from catching that insect. So is that normal?
Donciulis 1 year ago
@Donciulis yes, it'll grow more leaves. keep lots of light and water to its roots
Piranhaboy01 1 year ago
How long does it take to aliciae sundew to "roll" ?
Donciulis 1 year ago
@Donciulis small insects won't make it roll. it needs a large prey item before it rolls.
