  • I don't know how you guys feel but when I hear the start of this song, imaginary disco balls start rotating in my head. Just the perfect song to bring back the 80s disco feel.

  • @auswanderer2004 Hahahahahah yes. yes. yes. I concur.

  • i miss the creativity in music. such a creative era, the alterative 80's and this song was one of the best

  • Pure Electronic Music.... I love it :D

  • after 29 years this song still pumping my soul

  • R.I.P. John McGeoch ☸ڿڰڿڰۣ—

  • Man, makeup never had it so good!

  • New Wave - 80's artists using synthesizers but where the synthesizer did not dominate the guitar. The guitar dominated or was equal to the synthesizer

Synthpop - 80's artists either using solely electronically synthesized sounds or the synthesizer was totally dominant.

I know new wave was a term used before the 80s but generally, that's my take on how you split this type of music

Pet Shop Boys, OMD - Synthpop

Duran Duran, The Fixx - New Wave

  • @22ndWave Hey! Let's throw the concept of New Romantics in there and really confuse everybody :)

  • @aliasxr Well the New Romantics were really a sub-genre of people and music that several new wave and synthpop bands fell into but several didn't. It definitely spurred the attitude of the movement though and got it rolling. Duran Duran were originally very New Romantic (Nick Rhodes in Planet Earth) but moved away from it whereas bands like The Fixx were never really new romantic. Visage DEFINITELY were. New romanticism was about music style but also fashion and attitudes to expression, love etc

  • @aliasxr All in all the subgenre-ing of new wave and synthpop is really only good for organizing things on your Ipod. All that truly matters is that new wave, synthpop and the genres that branched from them were creative, cerebral and expressive milestones in music history that were in a word, breathtaking. Its such a shame that several factors led to the downfall of the new movement, (particularly the emergence of grunge and the coming of popular hip hop). God I love my taste in music!

  • @22ndWave That's pretty close, only thing is that many acts were New Wave who didn't use any synthesizers.

  • I remember hearing this KZSU and thought, wow this sounds good, so different than anything of the 70's. a whole new sound for my era, 80's

  • I love the 80's!!!

  • Mr. Strange certainly lives up to his name!

  • You see his half brother, John Arsehole

  • Oh,wait..she's just echoing the guy, except in French, isn't she?....

  • What is the girl going on about in the middle of the song? She just uses random phrases like "Desole" (sorry), "Valise" (suitcase) and "Deuxe yeux" (two eyes)....

  • This to me, was a groundbreaking song for a tune that came out 30 years ago. Could this have been the song that started the new wave era?

Synthesizers weren't being used to my knowledge up until the early 80's.

  • @hobnob34 Synthesizers had long been in use by the early 80s, dating back to the early 70s by bands that today are referred to as "prog rock," but rarely used exclusively. In the mid-70s, exclusively synth-based music began to be made by Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre, Cerrone, Giorgio Moroder, etc, the latter two employing them to make disco music.

  • @hobnob34 In the proliferation of music subgenres that followed punk in the late 70s/early 80s, one was called technopop or synthpop at the time and was synth-based: Depeche Mode, OMD, Ultravox, etc. Visage was a late, dance-oriented offshoot of Ultravox. Though the term "new wave" is now used to mean something like "early 80s synthpop," it dates to the late 70s, when it was applied to the skinny-tied, sort of powerpop, 60s-influenced guitar bands that followed punk.

  • visage from montreal true or false?

  • without the eccentricities of artistes such as Steve Strange / David Bowie / Boy George etc , music would be so flat, uncreative and monotone...just my opinion of course - but i'm right!!!!!! Long live the new romantics!

  • Very true jarmankartman - a shame todays music business is so dull.

  • Must be the most iconic videos made?

  • well said sir. one of the most iconic electro vids for sure and bollox to anyone who thinks otherwise!

  • Steve Strange is the Singer. He was Part of the New Romantic Movement. That was around in the early 80's. He is also in David Bowie's 1980's Video Ashes To Ashes. And also Friends with Boy George

  • there are so many storys about Visage,Steve Strange, ultravox singer song writer has the authorethy about this song, this songs rocks their balls

  • oh was you a personal friend who took it up the bum

  • yeah

they take no. 1 songs and just change the tune a bit

and make up words for it

  • it kinda sounds like cold cave - youth and lust i guess this where they got inspired

  • i didnt know that la roux used to be a man. i learn something new every day.

  • This record is so great it could drive you mad listening to it. Who cares if Steve can't sing and the lyrics are twaddle, it's a sonophiliavs paradise. DWWOOOOOO!!!

  • Who says he can't sing? It fits the song perfectly. The point to synthpop wasn't really impeccable vocals.

  • Apols, that should have read: "sonophiliacs paradise".

  • This is my second favourite record of all time after 'ghosttown' by the specials.

This song is so sad yet so beautiful at the same time. Bit like supporting West Ham Utd I suppose.

  • I just listened to ghosttown and I don't get it. Fade to Grey is the best song I've ever heard. Ghosttown was completely lack luster. Fade to grey is fricken perfect! I'm glad you like this one but i'm having so much trouble reconciling your love of the other. It just doesn't compute to me?

  • message a cent pour cent : pendant la seconde guerre mondiale jean moulin c était le sosie de merlin l enchanteur , georges augustin bidault est que maestro henri , laure diebold est que neil oleson mitzrael .

  • New Romantic 4 ever...

  • Sadly the video doesn't do the music justice. This song is exquisite! Can't believe that this song came out in '79. They were pioneers with this sound. Still one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've heard to date.

  • Sorry man, this video is great.

  • I'd fuck Steve Strange.

  • Well you are a man so you got that going for ya...

  • long live the uk SNR movement for the immense infuence they had on the future of music that did follow on from them

  • The make up styles in this vid are ahead of its time. Its Fantastic!

  • Doesn't Kelly Osbourne do a cover of this song? X[

  • It wasn`t a cover !!!

the song is One word" and i love it but i must admit she copies this songs both sound exactly the same

  • May i put in two cents- i guess i qualify as a "young punk". I do agree that many are being narrow-minded and quite rude. Personally I love many artistic videos both modern and older. Remember not to generalize-I feel that that can be one of the downfalls of so many societies. Enjoy the song and just respect one another (at least in the name of music and art)

  • fantastic song of 80's

    psychedelic make-up

  • The video is New Wave. It was a rejection of all things hippie from the 1970s. Great song. A shame that Steve Strange has had such a tough time since.

It was really Duran Duran who started the big budget videos which were like mini movies.

  • Yeah this video is gross, but you can see they had a low budget.

  • I've always liked this song, but I've never seen the video. It sucks! Still love the song, though :)

  • The video is of its time.

You young punks expect some silly slut to be pole dancing to every fucking video in order for it to be watchable.

Young fucking wankers ruining the concept of art!!!

  • Those kids today!!!!

  • You're... so narrow-minded. Not every 'young punk' enjoys the delights of the easily pleased mainstream masses. In fact, there are many who aspire to much greater, but you have your blinders on, I'm afraid. And this video... calling it 'art' is also a bit narrow-minded. If you'd like to see some true art from more modern music in videos, look no further than Isis or Tool or Neurosis or... well, there are a lot. Expand your horizons, old timer! :p

  • Thanks for the sermon.

Are you a young punk, is that why youre offended?

If what I said doesnt apply to you then why get all snotty about?

  • Although I do find this video to be on the artistic side, it was considered the basic art for it's time, in the 80's. Those with a more adventurous taste would consider Tool's videos to be art and not just some "weird garbage". But there can be more simple forms of art that are actually very creative for the less open minded. Sometimes, you can't break one of that habit. More fortunate for those whose taste isn't limited by religion and the mainstream. So in a way, I highly agree with you.

  • What'd they say?

  • Hey, I'm a young punk and I put the video up! >:(

  • @takalua911

    I agree with you!!!

  • @takalua911 the seeds were sewn in your generation

  • @takalua911 You couldn't be any more correct. I appreciate stuff. I was 5 years unborn when this video came out. My mum was still in art college. Old synthy stuff is grand!

  • great song.!! thanks

  • The synths on this were pretty special.

  • OMfG I can Tell That Kelly Osbourne got ''Ideas'' when she recorded One Word!

  • Ajá.

  • this song is suitably pretentious with it's french monologue and should be called 'Steve Strange Is Gay'.

  • I dont think it matters if he's gay or not, its still an awesome song.

  • An all time classic, way ahead of it's time as per the comment below. Luv it.

  • A pumping beat years before its time, i recall then how music the artists made statements about them thru art/image/lyrics cared enough what was happening to people on the street ,the world thru politics, yes their was shit as well in music .But you dont get take that singing about injustices of the state.

    psychedelic make-up of the 80's

good mix of french english lyrics

  • That's a very, very powerful track

  • It's what the term '80s classic' was invented for.

  • I think I prefer YouTube rather than the (old) MTV,because now I can play any videoclip I want, anytime I wish to.I'll never forget sitting through the whole 'Greatest Hits' only to see Depeche Mode at the end of the show for instance.I still miss '120 minutes' and 'Party Zone' though..

  • Love the hook singing

  • ke video mas guapo!!!!!!

  • Ahead of his times.Steve Strange the inventor of the NEW ROMANTIC scene, was my inspiration next to Pete Burns.this video proved it.

  • I agree. I don't think we have anything as weird and oiginal these days.I remember he was a real talking point and some people found this video weird and perturbing. Now I think there is a feeling we have seen it all. I don't think people really discuss pop stars in the workplace or school as much as they used to.

  • You should change where you work or study then...

  • We don't have T.O.T.P. anymore, when half the nation would have the collective experience of sitting down and watching the stars whose records they had bought.

X factor is good and attracts 12 million viewers, but most participants are largely forgotten within a few months.

  • To be honest I'm probably not that fussed about not discussing current musical people much anyway, I don't find too many of them WORTH talking about. We talk about music a lot where I work and it varies from old to new. I know it's always been a part of the biz, but I think disposability has become an industry by-word these days. Plenty of other young hopefuls waiting in the wings when this batch has reached their use-by-date. 'Scuse my cynicism.

  • Yes,I agree.Take Boybands for example,to me they seem to have been all interchangeable from about 1990 onwards.

  • You should see it here in Japan, the land where originality is non-existent. One of the most popular girl bands has a revolving door recruiting policy that keeps them all below a certain age(give or take) and their Svengali wannabe manager rakes in the cash.

  • WOOOOH WE LOVE PHOEBE SHE ROCKS

  • Come on New Zealand radio stations, how about playing some of these great 'ol classics instead of bashing the same 'ol stuff over and over....

  • Really liked your comment, exactly what

i sometimes think, did they skip a whole

period here with the Eurithmics etc....?

    Regards from Auckland

  • great fade to grey you no your music

  • shades of one of the first trance records ?

  • I still love the 70, 80, music.

    psychedelic make-up

  • loved the eighties....great charismatic clip..

  • Steve Strange is on the dole nowadays...unbelievable

  • This must have freaked out people who didn't understand it back in 1980!!!

  • Eternal music... claudia - portugal

  • I remember being mesmerized watching this sitting in front of the tv. watching night-flight ... and so happy when this came on ...back when i was 15 ys olde ...

  • uniue 80`s anthemn

  • Sacrée bonne chanson!

  • Classic. Billy Currie on form (again.....)

  • I want steve's makeup!

  • very gooddd

  • Hit the charts in Nov. 1980

  • Denna låten är bäst!

  • in response to the guy who dissed Visage:

Dear God but this is good. One of the many things it's got going for it is, it's not by Manson. There's bad stuff out there, but this is for the early goth scene. The only thing strange (no offence) about Steve where his clothes. Go on. FWH: you call it Vis-arse? I call it Vis-AGE! Cunt!

  • i think this track influenced fans of a whole range of genres, from goth to house....

  • Yeah, I always thought so, too, only it got categorised as synthpop, but in the intro, they list it as "special goth".

Obviously, I meant my comment before this as sarcasm towards the user "finestwineshumanity". The dude insulted the track and even called it "Vis-Arse" (he posted WAY before me), so I just responded by re-wording his comment. Hope that doesn't offend people here...

  • Won't hear a bad word said against this song - it's an absolute classic and sounds as good now as it did in 1980. Pure brilliance. New romantic music was fantastic until Culture Club showed up and ruined it. Visage never made a better record than this and I still have the single and still play it.

  • Cool to hear that a lot of people like yourself still like this great track.

I brushed the dust of my 'ol 45 the other day,and she still sounds great.

  • i think that culture club made the whole scene a little too happy...

Im not saying their music is bad, it just didnt fit well into the new romantic style

  • essa pra mim e a melhor musica do visage nota 10.0 para a banda que fez esta musica!!!!!!!!

  • This a good way to start the eighties....miss it heaps....

  • I like this music clip :D

  • It is ART

  • ABC good stuff? They were like Spandau Ballet or Duran Duran, the most commercial & easy doing music in the 80´s & the less creative.I prefer music like this song of Visage, special, different, unique, like songs of Yazoo,Ultravox,Kraftwerk,John Foxx,OMD,16 bit,New order, etc etc

  • seriously this guy lives behind my house in a council flat. he is totally fucked up now, on benefits, heads completely gone!

  • super song, kann ich nicht oft genug hören. cooles lied, nightrider

  • schönes altes lied. gam

  • VuIii fEin!! Hö hÖ Xd XD

  • Steve Strange is the sex. He's still gorgeous. He's truly the beauty in Visage- Midge Ure is the brains.

  • he did great at the hairdressing on e4 for charity well done this song is timeless and love it

  • He went to the same school as me!

Not at the same time though sadly...

    Born way latter...

  • I agree 100% sylvainsatori, this song was played in most nightclubs/bars/wine bars. Its a shame that there just isnt bands like this today but then again, would Visage fit in to the current UK/European scene?......

  • Visage in itself is a masterpiece of ART Avant Garde in it's purest form. Steve Strange being the face of Visage encapsulated the spirit of the band as well as blazing a trail in the 80's. I doubt anyone could of predicted the inpact 20 years later how we would still be talking about this magnificant band. Though they did not have the commercial success as Boy George or other's from the Blitz era did. Visage & Steve Strange will for ever go down in history as the trend setters of the 80's

  • Absolutly right! but the "Damned Don't Cry"...

  • absoulutely awsum song...and i was born in 1990 lol

  • wow... fantastic memories... this is the first record i ever bought. timeless, and just love the video... i feel like i am 10 years old all over again.

  • What a really strange song... still wonderful after all these years.

  • No music video ever transfixed me like this one - pure brilliance!!

  • great video...and the girl is impossible sexy!steve strange rules...thank's from portugal.

  • The girl is a DJ/Blitz Kid called Princess Julia.

  • thank you,i didn´t know it!

  • she's still gong strong and DJs at house parties by the way....

  • steve is welsh...sang this song and then toook drugs! he now lives with his mum in a flat in south wales!

wat a waste with his talent! love him!

great 80s music...why cant music now be like this?

  • Steve Strange ..... a very apt name

  • Briiliant....the best new romantic song ever.

  • true..

  • My favorite new wave title forever...It embodizes the whole genre. And, as a French,I particularly appreciate the two languages medley...

  • truly one of the best new romantic songs

  • New Romantic: best mouvement ever! God bless Steve Strange!

  • Love the music, the clothes, the people... :)

  • So do I!!!

  • Visually well done considering the time it was made, the song itself is a class act! Steve was ahead of the curve.

  • VISAGE FOREVER

    Love this song
