I could get SO FRUSTRATED with my Dad sometimes, who's now in his mid-80's. But one listen to this song and I'm able to set aside the frustration and look at his true heart and motives in what he says and does. No, no one's perfect, but it just reminds me that Dads - good Dads - bear the responsibility of husband and father, to protect and teach and lead, and be a good example.
Please everyone viewing Dan and his music. Please sign the petition on his web site to get him in the Rock and Roll Hall Of fame. They just voted in the Beastie Boys. Now tell me why Dan was left out?????? Pas this on and the more people vote we can puy pressure on the Hall of Fame!!!!
A true pure musician has been presented in this video. Nothing will ever be as pure as one person, one guitar. Nothing else. Anything more is a waste. Today's music. No comment.
one acoustic guitar and one real musician with a universal theme: fathers and their sons and the eternal push/pull/love/struggle for independence/need to be 'different'/ultimate loss - so the message is this: its never too late to say 'I Love You', UNTIL, they're gone. Then, it really IS too late. Stop wasting precious time.
These kinds of music touches my soul and inspires me to write something about life and love.. btw im a writer in my way, though not a professional one but it is still my talent, i am too very lucky to be given this opportunity to love old musics and to grow up with.
I wasn't born yet in this year where he performed this concert, i was born on 1st day of feb year 1993, and im 18 yet I love this one! though my friends say im an old school to music and could not blend to modern ones, though i like some of modern musics but im in love with older ones :)
@MrSuperpm1 my 22 year old beautiful daughter also loves older music, she says it makes more sense and tells a story and better music--So you're ahead of your time, be glad : ) good TASTE! because DF was and is a legend and a humble man of great heart
I only wish this younger generation would listen to him........ too many songs these days about total crap!!!!!!!! I am 60 now and wish peace and love to what is left of this world............
Dan Folelberg hsa been a gentle soul who's voice has brought me so much comfort for so many years. He will always be a part of my life & I love this great man. So Sorry he's not gracing the earth. Surely he's still singing & making beautiful melodies. No other musician can compare
Saw Dan solo at The Opry House in Nashville in about 1978 or 1979. He played this and "Run for The Roses" and they were both released a short while later. Was sitting on the top row in the back but there's not a bad seat in that whole place and it was an amazing show!
This song means so much our family. This is the song my sister danced at her wedding with our father. My father died last Friday and was in the hospital for for a week and a half. We made a up a CD of his big band favorites but we put this on first. The song could have been written about my father. He was the leader of our band. When I got the call my father had died. I played this song over and over on my drive to the hospital to see him, it gives me great comfort. A truly wonderful song.
I heard and fell in love with his music at 17yrs old. I cryed from my heart feeling each word as if it were I who wrote them. I am almost 50 now and his songs still touch me in the deepest part of my soul. You are missed Dan. God rest your beautiful soul.
@7yearstoday Thank you. He struggled to stay alive for so long and felt worse than he let on, so indicitive of his personality. I do enjoy thinking of him carefree and happy. It's just hard to believe he is really gone.
We're playing this great song at my dad's visitation and funeral today and tomorrow. From the very first time I heard Dan play this song, it reminded me of my dad. He was the leader of our band. Now, he can listen to Dan play in person. Both of them are certainly missed.
Wow I had Dan Fogelberg, John Denver, Garth Brooks, Billy Joel and Sir Elton to grow up to. Kids today have Justin Bieber 50 cent and the black eyed peas ? I think my era knew how to tell a story !
@stihlica13 I agree! I'm 30 and I don't even like most of the music that's out now. Nothing can compair this kind of music. What true story to tell... :)
@craftygirl7 well for 30 you have great taste in music , it's a pity that VH1 didn't ever have Dan on story tellers or behind the Music ! I will always remember the last show I saw him at the Pier in seattle on the waterfront a perfect 72 degree evening with blue sky and the sounds of boats in Elliot bay stealing a free show ! I hope that you were lucky enough to have a "Dan" memory too !
@stihlica13 And you never even mentioned James Taylor, Carole King, Jim Croce, Linda Ronstadt.....and on and on. Would the modern world recognize such talent if it did come along today anyway?
@ve7ha I remember the "I have to say I love you in a song" song.. Jim Croce, right? I'd listen to it over and over again and think, I'd dedicate this to the one i love.. TEN YEARS later and I still want that... Artists today aren't even half as good as artists then.. Happy and lucky I had the chance to grow up to these kinds of music..
@GoDdEzZrInOa Yes! And the "...if I could save Time in a Bottle...the first thing that I'd like to do..." Jim Croce. Still looking after TEN YEARS?? Yeah, but that's because you're a romantic...
@stihlica13 TRUE.... don't forget Elvis Presley :) My dad had these collection of tapes he'd keep "rewinding" on the casette,.. haha.. HAPPIER DAYS..I'm 19 btw and I love the oldies :))
@stihlica13 you got it stihl...maybe there are a few more awesome storytellers...but the kids today have moved away from art to total tech...so sad..i am sure however there will be a renaissance of art in a few years...the techno will get tiring and people will need more emotional experiences..my 3 cents
I truly cannot wait to join you and hear that beautiful voice once again! This world that we live in is only a small piece of time in our short lives, and legends like you Dan, never ever die. God bless you and your music my friend.
Being a good man means that sometimes you have to put aside the warrior mask and be tender. I shoot guns and drive trucks and love being a man. I will never be ashamed for being soft and maybe cry a tear or two also. It reaffirms my manhood as the creator said it would. Life is to short to live so restrained and estranged from everything good. Human emotion, man or woman, is good. Life is too short to confine it.
The Chorus of this song was laid on my Grandfather's chest when he passed away. This song brought back all the memories I had with him as a kid each time I heard it. I used the living legacy part as my inspiration when I wrote and delivered his eulogy at the funeral. I don't know how I gathered the strength to do that without getting choked up. Giving that speech has definitely helped with the healing process.
They just don't write and perform music like this anymore. too bad I'm 20 and didn't get to enjoy this fully and get to see him live. God Bless Dan. He was taken too soon.
the ever cherished song of the century... Amazing.. this song has been my favorite since high school.. agh.. sutters mill also by dan.. wow... great folk singer...
My Dad taught me to throw a baseball, took me fishing, most of all he passed along his love for playing the guitar to me. He passed away in Sept of 2006. When I hear this song, it peels back the years and reminds me of the journey we have traveled, the people we have come across. Dan, thank you for your gift of music and for making us all the more richer for having you amongst us. Peace...

@clusebalca I can relate to it also; my father died 9 years ago, I still think of him everyday. I still dream about him from time to time (in my dreams he is alive & we are sitting drinking coffee & talking politics as we did in life; the dreams are good) he was the nicest guy I ever knew.
this is my daddy's favorite song and every time I hear it I can't stop crying. I dread the day when I can no longer pick up the phone and call my dad and ask how he spent his day and hear his cheerful laughter on the line.
The world grew a little darker two years ago when Dan died. I miss the kind of music that speaks softly of what is so important in this world. There seems so little of that today.
This is an exceptionally beautiful song, and it made me cry :( He's a fantabulous singer!!!!!!!! This is not me writing this, this is my daddy. He has a tough exterior, but you know, he is really just a big old softy!!! Who loves this song :-) Kay kay

@brianl890 I really like what you said. I love this song too. I am half native. My mothers mohawk and my dad is english sometimes I feel like i don't belong in either tribe but I know the heavenly father excepts everyone righteous including Dan and hopefully me.
This song is so beautiful. It reminds me of my own wonderful father. His blood runs through me. We are coming up on the 4th anniversary of his death. How I miss him.
We watched Dan's 2004 SoundStage concert on PBS last night. I really loved it when he said that if he could only ever have written/performed one song, this would be it. Wow. really loved him and his music so very much.
To the Morning (from Home Free) may very well be the most beautiful song ever written and recorded...if you have not listened to it, do. Dan wrote and recorded it at either 17 or 18 yrs old...magical talent.
His wonderful music stands for itself. On his website someone wrote "it is hard to imagine heaven, without Dan there". So very true....
wow this is just awesome

This song is so beautiful. It reminds me of my own wonderful father. His blood runs through me. We are coming up on the 4th anniversary of his death. How I miss him.

Just for once I would like to do something great with my life, and even if it is never meant to be, Dan gives me inspiration to at least try.

May your weary soul rest in peace.
You are now the leader of Heaven's Band.
