@JoshGoldie I can try. That is a bit of an oddball question, but here goes. You are right in making the connection between d minor and F Major. You've clearly done your music theory homework. It's just a matter of this song is in d minor, and while that contains all the same notes as F Major, our ears want to hear d as the tonic. If you are playing F Ionian, you are falling back to F as the tonic which is just not what the ear anticipates. Dorian--G will be closer. The song is d Aeolian.
