Jason; it almost makes me think that in order to play "fast" tastefully one would need a custom or at least a well gapped/embossed harp. Would you agree? IMO, you and Howard Levy are the few that play fast but MEANINGFUL shit. Thing is, most out of the box harps can't get 4 draw to 4 blow fast without choking (even with little air). I understand though that you learned how to customize your own years and years ago. Thanks from Kansas City.
Okay, I freaking love this video.... BUT what I would love even more is if you could explain the tongue movement on the harmonica. I can play a little fast, but I would love to amp up my speed a little more!
This is perhaps the best most well articulated, precise question I have ever been asked on you tube!
Yes yes and Yes...Tongue accent all of them...then do some with just one then some with non...all the above...I think I might be just accent the 2 draw bend ...but I know I do all kinds of ways...staccato is an excellent way of accentuating the bend notes you've worked so hard to get accurate..so overdue it for a while!
get use to it then get sick of it then let it flow when you need after making it a habit, then breaking the habit the owning the technique at your Demand)
theres a bluegrass band named "old crow medicine show" and they have a song called " i hear them all" and it has super cool harmonica but i cant figure out how to play it. could you check it out and give me some pointers?
in cross: 2 draw, 3 draw(Bent a half step), 4 blow, 4 draw, 5 draw, 6 blow(Octave) ao yes the 1 draw, 1 blow and 2 draw bent would work below the two draw natural as lower incomplete extension of the scale.
Oh! I didn't understand your question the first time...The answer is no. a pentatonic is a five note scale I wrote out for you below in second position. What you had described is an octave more specific to our instrument a tongue blocked octave. An octave , is the interval between one musical pitch and another with half or double its frequency. It's the same not just higher or lower. When you employ what you noted above you are playing two notes together that are octaves hope that helps-.jason
An excellent clip here. Shows how centred you are when you are playing fast. Also , a sign of a true master is when he gives credit to other players like Pat R. , Adam Gussow, and Ron Shellist . You're a super player and an inspiring instructor Jason. All the Best , now back to my learning ! !
Jason you truly are the best! Everyone should also check out Clyde Ramsey; Pat's son. He's not quite as good as his dad, but he is much better lookin' and easier to get along with.
LOL. I've been trying to track Clyde down since Pat died. I spent some time with him just before it happened. If you know where he is...contact me. I need to speak with him. Thank you very much for your comment. It made me laugh and miss both those Ramseys.
Its cool how you think chops should be, I absolutely think like you on that. It shouldnt be random stuff. Taking from other players and inovating is one of the best advices you've said. And finaly thank you very much, I'll definitly try your stuff up :P
I learned some stuff from Adam back in 96 but also Pat Ramsey madison Slim and Hummel as well were direct personal influences! Thank you so much for watching and the lavisous complement as you can see from my past spelling errors i am not a genius but thanks anyway!
I've watched about 30 minutes of your videos and learned as much as I did trying to follow the "Intro to I-55" for 6 months! This is the next best thing to getting to sit down with you in person. Best of luck in CO.
Superb series of lessons on the ever perplexing issue of how some harpists play fast. You are a good teacher, and maybe I can see the influence of your own instructor Adam Gussow. I've been pretty much everything I know is self-taught. The result is someone who has a hard time unlearning their bad habits ,and I'm grateful you and Adam are here walking us through basics and demystifying the trickier things. Thanks for the vids and the demonstrations.
Great stuff Jason! Very, very useful. I play fast but not as fast and precise as you and now I need to change my approach to fast playing with help of your advices. Great videos, hope to see more.
When I hear your playing I decide to start using ovebends live, and play diatonic more than chromatic. Thank you very much, your music is great.
dear Etaborya: thanks for watching and Thanks for the kind words. Don't put down the chromatic though!!! I made that mistake years agoand wish I hadn't I have slowly been geeting back into it! Do keep up the overbending! And Thanks again!
Jason you are great. Thank´s a lot from Spain.

Hi jason,
Can I trouble you with quick question on playin fast triplets?
E.G.: 2, 2bend, 1, (all draw)
Then you reverse it 1, 2bend, 2
Which notes do you tongue? All notes or just the first note of the triplet? I mean accent with the tongue (not TB)
Silly question maybe, but it's to fast to hear for me.
Hope to see you again sometime in the lowlands!
