There is no such thing as IP. IP is an artificial constraint put on society for the benefit of the few, and usually not the artists. Copyright is the proper means of protecting artistic or 'intellectual' works. Further, Copyright itself is a mere formality that was put into place so that society could know the source of a work, in order that the author could be distinguished, nothing more. Anyone who thinks it is fair to ruin a human life for stealing anything, deserves the Hell they create.
Downloaders...you can help prevent terrorists and their funding by not buying pirated dvds or infringing on copyrights by supporting the idea of a reasonable exchange of money for good. Industry if your products are actually worthwhile then any publicity and advertising (namely word-of-mouth) would be beneficial. Thanks youTube for the free space for rant. es
Huh? When was the last time you *paid* for a download? How exactly is this supporting terrorists? I think you need to clear your brain of all those brainwashing soapsuds before you make any more posts...
The downloader feels he or she deserves to own this work because they can..lets meet in the middle..a compromise if you will. Let us (as in the creative youth of this generation) propose a compromise which is also gaining support from other mediums..digital entertainment available on secure websites for a reasonable cost. There are individuals who would like to own a hard copy and those who consume movies and music through a PSP, Ipod, protable DVD, Iphone, or other strictly digital sources..
There exist People who download movies, music, and other aforementioned intellectual property. These individuals benefit from they emotional experience they have from the creative work for free...unless you count the time and storage space. On the other hand you have the entertainment and software industries that produce these works. The industry feels that it is being cheated out of profits they believe would be theirs of certain individuals hadn't acquired them digitally instead of physically...
Yes, and sometimes they are. However, being cheated is a a fact of life. Rather than suing their customers (yes, most 'pirates' are -also- paying customers), the MPAA should be looking for a new economic model. All they are doing with this anti-piracy crap is shifting the blame from themselves to you, even if you are not a pirate.
piracy is not theft, its copyright infringment. You are idiots. The industry doesnt lose as much money as you claim because most of those people would never have bought it anyways.
OK, well since Downloading is stealing, how come shoplifters get tickets or nothing at all, and "Internet Pirates" get sued for thousands of dollars? Seems to me like the MPAA should start going after people who shoplift DvDs it will be a lot easier for them to prove that they are guilty, that way they can avoid that pesky 'justice system'
The theft of intellectual property is just wrong. Downloading films that you haven't paid for is simply stealing, there is no other side to it. There are always those who say that its so easy to download movies online that it shouldn't be illegeal. That is a weak argument. That is the equivalent of saying that it is okay to steal a car since the driver left the doors unlocked. As far as actual shoplifting, that is up to each individual store or company to deal with.
I don't think you've addressed his argument that the scales of justice are skewed. Shoplifting is punished based upon actual goods stolen and actual harm done. IP 'theft' is punished based upon perceived losses and poorly argued implications.
@WestTexasSIFEteam Your post did nothing to address SableFoxx's point AT ALL.
You claim it is stealing, you claim it's "theft of intellectual property" - but you do nothing to prove it, which matters since the fact that copyright infringement and theft are different laws completely, and "theft of intellectual property" as a crime does NOT actually exist makes it easier to disprove than prove.

Wait, so you steal several billion dollars and you get fined 100k? Sounds like a good deal to me...
PhoenixHacker 5 years ago
Where do you get that 'several billion'==100k fine? You do understand that you can be sued up to something like $150,000 per downloaded movie, right?
The MPAA is playing on your ignorance.
