Terrible that Rush reacted that way toward Rand Paul. Rand believes in the Rush message of questioning the status quo, being an independent thinker, allow freedom of speech and decisions, end the wars, and get corruption out of the way mankind governs itself. There was so much crossover and Rand was only showing off his favorite band he grew up with. Sucks that Rush took it so personally as they did in '96 with the Working Man tribute CD by over a dozen virtuoso music paying homage to Rush.
At 28 seconds in, she says "the band is not 'signaling' Paul out". She should have said "singling Paul out". Maybe it was a nod to Signals, the awesomest album of my childhood!
@joverboss That is the most mis-quoted song title ever! I never could understand why, but knuckleheads have called it "Spirit of the Radio" ever since it came out. Even Guitar World (May 1993) used the wrong title on its complete sheet music! At least the tabs were accurate :)
Rush showed alot of grace and class in dealing with this copyright infringement as I would expect. Why? Rush views their status and the platform they have earned as a privilege that they gained from their fans. They don't use this privilege to create a political bully pulpit like so many ungrateful artists in our time. They continue to be amazing and are in a class of their own.
Rush is my favorite band, and if I had to choose, Rand's father Ron would be my favorite politician. It's not like were talking square fits into circle here. They are both modest people who's higher up's are pressuring this argument. The best thing commenters can do is take a deep breath and think objectively.
@bobmarleyisgod1 Libertarians are against big government. Rush are still Canadian citizens. Rush pays taxes in both Canada and the U.S. Canada has socialized medicine. Now tell me, what libertarian or Republican do you that benefits from socialized medicine besides Rand Paul? Don't believe me? Call him. He betrayed the Tea Party movement
@RushFanatic125 Are you sure you're a Rush fanatic? Check out Geddy's comments on the Juno Award when he said that the guys never gave ujp their Canadian citizenship. What does that mean? Well, it means that the guys are paying taxes in both Canada and the U.S. because they are all Permanent Residence (green card holders) of the U.S. And tell me, what Republican would support their country by paying taxes twice? once in the U.S. and once in Canada? Oh and Canada has socialized medicine
@KOAJaps Im not talking about the rest of the band members, i know just know neil is a republican. And concidering i only listen to Rush, I'm pretty sure im am a fanatic
@RushFanatic125 Oh just Neil! Well I spoke to one of Neil's very close friend and that person said that Neil outgrew the conservative party. Oh and, there are no Republicans in Canada. Neil is a member of Progressive Conservative Party of Canada and he supports socialized medicine, is pro-choice, pro big government. Tell me ONE Republican who is like that in Congress?
@RushFanatic125 You mean "one of Neil's [supposedly] very close friends" says that Neil supports socialized medicine and big government. I think that we would need some substantial evidence that Neil's philosphy would have changed so drastically in such a short period of time, and such hearsay is evidence of nothing at all. I rather doubt the veracity of this, and the documentary and other sources demonstrates that all three members of the band have a libertarian world view.
@makanmata Geddy, Alex and Neil live in Canada. tinyurl (dot) com (forward slash)424ne4u. The medical care is paid for by taxes and Google Juno award with Geddy saying they don't want to leave Canada either. It's hard to believe, but a true capitalist would NOT want to pay taxes...twice eve. Once in the U.S. and once in Canada. Also, 2112. Temple of Syrinx was based on the guys say F-You to the record industry, not the govt. And the Priests are not govt officials, but priests.
@KOAJaps Well no, you are wrong again. Neil actually lives in California since he remarried. Your thought that all Canadians want socialized medicine and big government is rather provincial and without any basis. As for 2112, the thing about art is that we can all see in it what we want to see, but the artist has told us what he was trying to say -- read Anthem and find out. Sorry to tell you, but your heros are libertarians.
@makanmata So if I told you that Neil is still a Canadian citizen, while living as a permanent residence in California, then I told you my friend is Donna Halper, the disc jockey who introduced Rush at WMMS? What happens if I told you that Donna said that Neil used to be a libertarian, but grew up and is now a left-leaning libertarian? Or as you said: "the thing about art is that we can all see in it what we want to see" and you'll only see what you interpret as fact?
@bobmarleyisgod1 I think you'd be hard-pressed to call Rand Paul "pro war". He has never supported the war in Iraq, and believes that a lot of the justification for that war was fabricated. He also believes that building military bases in foreign nations is inappropriate. And as for abortion, that's not really a defining issue among libertarians.
And believe me, if all the US cared about was taxes, we wouldn't be $13 trillion in debt right now...
I will never understand how in the world out of all musicians... how they met Neil and they created such incredible music. There are many musicians in the world.... even back then but it is the most perfect thing in life I have EVER Experienced! they are the miracle combination
back to the politics.... the artisan news awkwarded the story out by misinterpreting Ayn Rand differentiating it from Rand Paul. Some people ear it in their dog hears. Some just don't get it, what it is...
@pbmax Eh, not exactly. Geddy Lee's personal views actually seem to be very similar to those of Rand Paul. It's just nice to see that they're going after him anyway, and that rules are rules no matter who you are. (You should stil proceed with what you were going to do though.)
Why do such random comments get voted into the top 2? Truthful or not, at least vote something meaningful up there for every person who watches this video to see, eh?
@lifeson46 Thanks, but no thanks. We don't "swing that way". I'm a republican and love Rush. I like Ted Nugent, thank you for pointing out that Ted Nugent appeals to conservatives. But let me let you in on a little secret. Republicans aren't the only ones that use songs to rally support. John Kerry's dumb, flip-floppin' ass used a song during one of his campaign rallies back in '04. Al Gore... the same in 2000. And this "was a COPYRIGHT ISSUE". I'm not defending Rand Paul, but back the fuck up.
@RushFanatic87 Intensities in ten cities appeals to me as much as a hat scratch skeeter. Ted Nugent yet on the other hand, besides the whole flaw in his psyche about the Thou Shalt Not Kill part, make him an otherwise sober, upright, common sense, kind of guy. Now onto the barbarism when it comes to Eminem and Kid Rock and Madonna. Simply in the fact that detroit and nola are like sister cities in reverse gears, who knows that there aint no such thing better than gulfcoast greatlakes rap GetBusy
Ooo I'm post whoring #3 here. I forgot to mention that every wall in my room was filled with every album cover (at the time), Poster you could buy, "bootleg" stuff from that underground record store from Berkeley or my Hometown and magazine cutouts. from 83-85. I was also a fan in the mid-late 70s as a kid but got into different musics like Motown and Punk and Glam rock that was dying out like David Bowie and the NYDolls, Iggy Pop.
My taste in music changes a slight bit over time. But for the past 10 years it hasn't changed much at all. I listen to more dark 70s and 80s stuff. but RUSH and AC/DC and Zep (though common mainstream in the day) were my favorite since Bon (Not Brian), Geddy and Robert's voice all have a tone in which I can sing too (or used to). And somehow those songs lifted me spiritually. BTW Buy BTLS. There is a funny scene where their first Manager (to have been) looks mad he didn't sign them. FAIL!
@runk1putt Funny Statement.. made me laugh. I'm sure you were just kidding or trolling a bit because you're start video on your channel is Bono of U2. You can't get anymore socialist then an angry Libertarian Irishman. :P
very good Band. Sille 64
This is obviously not the same as, say, Ronald Reagan using John Cougar's "Pink Houses" or Sarah Palin using Heart's "Barracuda". The aforementioned are politically not on the same page as Reagan and Palin, so of course they're gonna object, copyright or not. The headline on this video is misleading. With Rush, it was a copyright issue, nothing more. The band may not be 100% in line with Rand Paul's politics, but they have nothing against him, either.
Typical disengenious headline. Its 10 seconds saying they don't want a politician using their song for copyright reason, not taking on a politician. Wouldn't even be a footnote if it was any left of pol center.
Don't listen to these rednecks below. I'm pretty sure Rand himself is libertarian and there's no tension between the group and him, just a copyright mix-up. These trolls are making Paul look bad.
Paul as far as I know believes in individual liberty, well as long as your behavior does not infringe on another, is against the war in what it has become, smaller government with less interferance, lower taxes, and even as far as I know thinks pot should be legalized. ...........................
................Seeing that the cliche is that rock bands are all about that kind of stuff one would think Rush wouldn't have too much of a problem, especially seeing that paul doesn't even effect canadian politics. Unless there is a bias/hangup because he is under the banner of republican, which has been unfairly and ignorantly demonized by the hipsters/stigmatized. Unless they are being honest and it is just a copyright issue, but wouldn't they have control over their own music ????????????
Anyone who doesn't dig Rush isn't a musician. Those whose minds aren't ready for the music's true complexity, will never EVER understand it. And @MrRepublicanpatriot will probably get raped by another dude (and enjoy it) before his time is over. No one needs to sweat over someone who believes that their beliefs are SO great, that everyone needs to be forced to follow them.
@MrRepublicanpatriot For the record you fucking moron, wer're talking about the band, not your lover, Rush Limbaugh. Now shut the fuck up and go back to giving your own father a blow job.

@7389 Rush Limbaugh is a great Patriot. this band are fucking homos.
speaking of AIDS carrying faggots, portland maine is one of the top places for pickle kissing pillow biters, i see you fit right in with those faggots and dykes up there
@MrRepublicanpatriot You're still coming around here ? Listen BITCH, yes I called you BITCH even if you do pretend to be a male. It says a lot about what a LOSER and MORON you are to randomly go onto videos of things you don't like just to start fights.
And you personally attacking Portland Maine is LAUGHABLE !!!! Do you really think I give a rats ass about what an asshole like you thinks of anything ?
Now shut the fuck up and go get me my dinner, bitch.
@7389 no i'm not a faggot like you. portland maine is full of faggots like you but maine did the right thing when they voted not to give you faggots and dykes what choose to be that way any special rights to destroy marriage
@7389 LOL !!! High five 7389 !! Ignore this jerkoff,, He has enemies all over Youtube. I have his IP address, and I am reporting him. He has nothing but hatemail all over his page and he does nothing but start trouble and bait people. Everything he says speaks VOLUMES about his personality, his mentality and the fact that he's a sad loser.

@Kruegerisgod these fags tried to stop Rand Paul and he kicked there asses all the way to winning office!!! and if they were so concerned about copyrights they would do something about all the bootlegs sold online of there concerts. this was completly about politics and these dipshits LOST
@Kruegerisgod Ignore this asshole. He's ignorant and likes to hide behind a computer screen to start trouble. He THINKS he's hiding, but I have his IP address ( thanks to Jenna Boon) and he is being turned in. A complaint is also being made to Youtube about him harrassing people.
@MrRepublicanpatriot -the question is not whether they suck but more importantly do they swallow. listen you cock smoker for you to come on and troll about rush is great because real fans have a sense of humour. as far as you picking republican over democratic issues, wake up you robot it's two sides of the same coin. stop letting the system divide us. long live the republic!
@MrRepublicanpatriot -1st it takes banking reform, once that is done the federal reserve can be reckoned with. 2nd would be to overall the tax code so we can pay off the principal and not just the interest on this national debt. 3rd abolish the irs. since your man has won what has he done? they all start out as patriots then get seduced by the machine. his fate will be like all the others towing the line or sacrificed on the alter of the republic. give him time, he will disappoint you.
I guess if you don't understand intellectual property rights or copyright law and how it relates to a surname, I'm not sure what to tell you. If they opted to not allow me to use YYZ for a simple railroad safety production, your impotent claim that their "political views" somehow are related to Rand Paul or anyone else's crystal clear violation of the law are intellectually dishonest.
@rushnut1958 I guess reading comprehension isn't your strong point. Again, I wasn't referring to the legality of the issue, but the "spirit" of it.Not too difficult a concept to grasp. And there's no question that politics are at play, especially when they posted "Obamamania" on their website for weeks after the 2008 election. I doubt they would deny the big "O" if he requested a Rush song for his campaign. It's all political.
@dothejcbeat At first, I thought you were just ignorant. Then maybe just stupid. Now I see the truth. You are a lying piece of dog shit. This band from Canada did not put any such thing on their site. They don't give a flying fuck about American politics, just American money. My God! Do you lie to your wife and kids like that?
@rushnut1958 Are you ready to be proven wrong? Look on Rush's website. Click on the "news" link, and go to the Jan 15, 2009 post. It's a tribute to the Big "O" himself titled "Obamamania"? And you say I don't know my facts. All those words you wasted defending your amusing ignorance. Oh, and thanks for bringing attention to my book. Maybe I'll buy some hair plugs with the money :)
@dothejcbeat On the road with only my ipad. Their site is flash, and as you know ipad doesn't support flash. But if I am wrong, I apologize in advance.
You're twisting this 'usage' thing up in knots. The comparison you make is a non-starter.
Rush didn't need the Twain estate's permission to use the title "Tom Sawyer" any more than you would need permission to post the words "I just read a book about Tom Sawyer." Just mentioning the title of an artistic work in the public domain doesn't require the creator's permission. The song "Tom Sawyer" doesn't feature actual words from Twain's book, so it's a non-issue.
@dothejcbeat Doesn't matter. Tom Sawyer is in the public domain. Copyrights are for the life of the creator plus 40 years. Wait until Rush is dead plus 40 years. Then anyone can use Tom Sawyer. I'm going to use it to sell a line of prophylactics.
@dothejcbeat Did Rush ask the Mark Twain estate to use the name Tom Sawyer? That is the absolute dumbest you tube comment in history. Did Mr. and Mrs. William Sawyer get their permission to name their son Tom when he was born in '54? What a stupid remark. In '96, I made a safety film for BNSF RR. I contacted Rush management for permission to use YYZ. They did not grant it, I didn't use it. The SONG is their intellectual property. Any pre law student knows the difference.
Well "rushnut1958" you may need to take a bite of the proverbial "chill pill" buddy. I was not speaking from a legal ("letter of the law") perspective, but from a "spirit of the law" perspective. If Rush is going to use the work of someone else to promote their own work (which is good, I admit), then ethically (if not legally) they shouldn't have a problem with others using their work. I think the problem here lies more in the political leanings of the different parties.
You said: "Funny how the people that make the laws are most likely to break them."
You mean like (D) Tim "tax cheat" Geitner?
Or (D) Barney "it was my roommate that ran the male prostitution ring, not me" Frank?
Or (D) Charlie "it was my accountant's fault I failed to pay thousands in taxes" Rangel?
Or (D) Maxine "it's just a coinkydink that I used my congressional position to get taxpayer money to bail out a bank my husband & I have financial interests in" Waters?
@Ken5244 Of course missed some others, like Larry "Shifty Feet" Craig and Tom "Oooo, you are a big boy" Foley. And how about Tim "Why I never meet his male prostitute or this meth before" Haggard. It's not a crime to be gay, but all these guys were arrested.
Lots of bands don't allow their songs to be used by political campaigns. Back in the 80s, the GOP wanted to use Born in the USA as a campaign theme song. Springsteen's management said No Way. Of course, no one from the GOP actually read the song's lyrics, which would have made it a doubly embarrassing choice for a theme song. As for Paul, he used the song without permission, which is even worse. Rush is Canadian, btw. Why use their song? Paul's people are idiots.
I'm a big Rush fan, but come on! Relax a little guys. You've made millions off of Tom Sawyer, but did you invent the name "Tom Sawyer"? Wasn't that someone else's idea? Shouldn't you be paying tribute to Mark Twain? I've gotta say, I'm a bit dissapointed. I thought you were above this kind of thing.
Moreover, Rush didn't "make millions off of Tom Sawyer" in the way you allege. The song is not about the character Tom Sawyer in Twain's book ("The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"). It has nothing whatsoever to do with it. The song's lyrics, oblique as they are, are about the characteristics of a MODERN DAY Tom Sawyer -- a free spirit, a rebel, maybe a rocker (according to Peart).
Rush didn't use copyrighted artistic work to promote themselves -- by contrast, Rand Paul did.
@dothejcbeat I'm sure it was the copyright thing, but also RUSH probably doesn't want to get involved in any political party. They may agree with Paul, but they may not. Who knows and who cares, it's their song let them do with it as they please.
I would be mad if some opportunistic politician used some of my work to promote probal lies from another so called grass roots republican...sue them, sue them hard!
@ViciousAlienKlown This kind of thing happens, unfortunately. When Sarah Palin was promoting the Republican Party's Presidential candidate (with her as VP), she borrowed Heart's song "Barracuda" for her background campaign music, without even bothering to ask Heart if she could. Their lawyers immediately shot her a "Cease & Desist" letter, which she eventually complied with. I hope Rush sues this guy & wins; this politician "the rules don't apply to me" thing has got to stop...
@seattlejohn01 Same thing happened in Canada about ten years ago. Stockwell Day was leading the Canadian Alliance in the federal election and his people used U2's Beautiful Day without permission. U2 management issued a cease and desist order, but Day's people didn't stop. At last, U2 served the campaign with papers summoning a court appearance. Finally, they stopped using the song. Funny thing was that the song was a love song, and it made no sense for the campaign.
I'm a Rand Paul supporter and Rush fan! I have no doubt that Alex, Geddy and Neil would agree with Rand Paul if they listened to what he has to say. I know this move by Rush's lawyers has nothing to do with that but I just wanna throw it out there anyways. Rush would never write songs like 2112 and Freewill if they didn't believe in liberty. Writing 2112 obviously shows they sure as hell don't like socialism or any of it's evil cousins like facism or communism.
You should have "doubt that Alex, Geddy and Neil would agree with Rand Paul ...." Neil describes himself as "a left-leaning Libertarian" and has criticized Fox News for being "right-wing biased." So he's not a traditional conservative. As a conservative myself, that annoys me, but his beliefs are what they are.
As for "Freewill," it is an Ayn Rand-influenced diatribe against religion (Neil is a devout, outspoken atheist) and has nothing to do with politics or "liberty."
@Ken5244 Well, FoxNews is more of a propaganda piece for the GOP. Even when there was all those bank bailouts under Bush, FoxNews called it "stimulus" and said it was "good for the economy". I guess it allowed all those executives to get their bonuses, so they could spend them on all kinds of shit, which is good for the economy. I wonder how many yachts you have to buy before the economy turns around?
First, your characterization of the GOP using "Born in the U.S.A." as a theme song is incorrect. It wasn't the GOP -- as a party -- using it. It was the Reagan presidential campaign, specifically on the east coast. The GOP didn't use it in any other elections.
Second, songs are used by Dems all the time even though the lyrics have nothing to do with politics. Obama used The Doobies Bros.' "Takin' It to the Streets," which had zero to do with politics.
@Ken5244 At least the Dems asked to use the songs. And the Clinton campaign paid Fleetwood Mac for their song. After the Springsteen debacle, the Reagan campaign asked John Cougar if they could use "Pink Houses". Really, these guys don't have a clue.
I'm sure there have been Dems who've used artists' songs before, sometime & somewhere in some campaign, without getting legal authorization to do so. But since most musicians tend to be liberals, they haven't objected publicly. So we haven't heard about it. Your inference that Dems supposedly take the ethical high ground on this is laughable.
As for not having a clue, it cuts both ways. Shall we talk about Joe Biden and his "Roosevelt went on TV" debacle (among many others)?
@Ken5244 Hey Bonehead? Where did I say that Dems were on a higher ethical plain. The example was that the Clinton campaign PAID Fleetwood Mac for the use of their song BEFORE they used it, which is what you're supposed to do. To infer anything else from that state just means you're on crack, likely jerking off when you wrote, and are illiterate as well.
Yeah, I'm so "illiterate." I'll have to work on that. Maybe someday I can rise to your level of articulation. *rolls eyes*
Your criticisms of the GOP, as if the Dems aren't as bad or worse, demonstrates hypocrisy. It's that simple. You know what they say about people in glass houses ....
I'm not disputing what Murdoch said (although I didn't see it). I'm disputing your spin, er, interpretation, of what his words meant. I see nothing amounting to a "confession" so stop lying.
@Ken5244 Where the GOP is concerned, let's give genocide a chance. I can think of nothing better than to herd every single Republican into a giant gas oven and burn them all to the Hellfire they can't stop yakking about.
No, Fox News is not a propaganda piece for the GOP. If you actually ever watched it (instead of drinking your leftist MSNBC Kool-Aid), you'd know they are completely fair and balanced and give leftists TONS of airtime. Leftists simply don't want ANY credible views put forth by conservatives, and when they are, they call Fox a shill for the GOP. What a joke.
Re the bank bailouts under Bush, the Dems in Congress supported and voted for them. Ooops.
@Ken5244 On Real Time, Rupert Murdoch was one of the panelists. When Bill Maher asked him "I hear you own a news channel..." Murdoch replied, "Maybe. Some think it's a news channel, others think it's performance art." I think we can take that as a confession.
Only a dishonest leftist would twist that statement by Murdoch into a "confession" that Fox News somehow isn't a news channel. Free Clue #1: Just 'cuz a channel has the name "news" in it -- you know, like CNN *wink* -- doesn't mean every single show they offer is a news show. Like CNN, the Fox News channel offers straight news along with other programs (media & news analysis, pop culture, opinion programs clearly presented as such [e.g., Hannity], documentaries, and so on.
@Ken5244 Are you really that stupid?! MURDOCH SAID IT. On the air and in front of everyone. Besides, you cares what FoxNews says. Everyone knows who they are and they don't deny it. I think it would be great to have a news network that does nothing but reports about how Latinos are going to take back all of the southwest US because whitey aren't popping them out the way they used to. Wait. They already do. Clear Channel operates a Latino channel that does just that. No one is fair and balanced.
As for "everyone knows who Fox News is and they don't deny it," that's just more leftist hyperbole. Fox News is a network that broadcasts a variety of programming, including hard news. In fact the most strictly "news" program they air, in prime time, is Shepard Smith's "Studio B." And Smith is an outspoken Democrat. The fact that you choose to misrepresent accurate news reporting as being "right wing propaganda" because it doesn't fit your world view merely displays your dishonesty.
LOL at the notion that CNN is in the "middle." It's always been a partisan, leftist network, owned by the far-left Ted Turner. The fact that MSNBC exceeds their leftist bias by giving new meaning to the term "lunatic fringe" doesn't diminish CNN's own bias. They used to be called the "Clinton News Network" for good reason.
The only remotely "middle" news host they have is Anderson Cooper, and he's only on for an hour a day.
Like I said Fox is so far to the right that any other news organization is to the left. I mean to Fox supporters all other news stations are leftist liberal leaning.
If you can point out another news organization to the right of Fox, what you say might actually have made sense....but until then.....
Like I said, CNN got the name "Clinton News Network" for a reason. It sure wasn't for a "middle" approach to their programming.
Your comparative reasoning is fallacious. A network isn't "to the right", "left" or "middle" because it leans one direction more than some other network. A truly "middle" network would be one of two things:
1. Completely neutral; or
2. Balanced in terms of giving both sides equal air time
The 1st is impossible, and Fox is closest to the 2nd.
Fox news got the name "Faux news" for a reason too....
I think you need to actually watch all 3 networks, Having Juan Williams as a panelist isnt equal time, either is cutting off or shouting over a left leaning guest.,
I know its hard to see with your left eye closed....
Fox panders to right, MSNBC panders to the left, CNN reports the news,
... anyone who 'actaully' watches all 3 can see the obvious.
I watch all 3 all the time. That's exactly why I can voice an observation based on facts.
"Faux news" is a term coined by the Olbermann/Maddow/Huffington/MoveOn crowd. In other words, the same left "panderers" you acknowledge on MSNBC. In other words, socialists and America-haters who lie for a living. Wake up.
Fox has far more than Juan Williams on the left. Dems Geraldo Rivera & Shepard Smith have their own shows, and Alan Colmes co-hosted H&C for > a decade. There are more.
You need to actually watch all 3 networks. *wink* If you did, you'd know that The O'Reilly Factor, On the Record, Hannity, News Watch, and most of their other shows feature, every day, hardcore reps from the left like Bob Beckel, Kirsten Powers, Doug Schoen, Juan Williams, Alan Colmes, Malik Shabazz *rolls eyes*, et al. Glenn Beck has debated the head of the American Communist party on his show. Cindy Sheehan, Media Benjamin & Michael Moore have been on many times. It's obvious.

I rather doubt the veracity of this, and the documentary and other sources demonstrates that all three members of the band have a libertarian world view.
makanmata 7 months ago
@makanmata Geddy, Alex and Neil live in Canada. tinyurl (dot) com (forward slash)424ne4u. The medical care is paid for by taxes and Google Juno award with Geddy saying they don't want to leave Canada either. It's hard to believe, but a true capitalist would NOT want to pay taxes...twice eve. Once in the U.S. and once in Canada. Also, 2112. Temple of Syrinx was based on the guys say F-You to the record industry, not the govt. And the Priests are not govt officials, but priests.
KOAJaps 7 months ago
@KOAJaps Well no, you are wrong again. Neil actually lives in California since he remarried. Your thought that all Canadians want socialized medicine and big government is rather provincial and without any basis. As for 2112, the thing about art is that we can all see in it what we want to see, but the artist has told us what he was trying to say -- read Anthem and find out. Sorry to tell you, but your heros are libertarians.
makanmata 7 months ago
@makanmata So if I told you that Neil is still a Canadian citizen, while living as a permanent residence in California, then I told you my friend is Donna Halper, the disc jockey who introduced Rush at WMMS? What happens if I told you that Donna said that Neil used to be a libertarian, but grew up and is now a left-leaning libertarian? Or as you said: "the thing about art is that we can all see in it what we want to see" and you'll only see what you interpret as fact?

JoarSupurEthics 9 months ago
@bobmarleyisgod1 I think you'd be hard-pressed to call Rand Paul "pro war". He has never supported the war in Iraq, and believes that a lot of the justification for that war was fabricated. He also believes that building military bases in foreign nations is inappropriate. And as for abortion, that's not really a defining issue among libertarians.
And believe me, if all the US cared about was taxes, we wouldn't be $13 trillion in debt right now...

John Kerry's dumb, flip-floppin' ass used a song during one of his campaign rallies back in '04. Al Gore... the same in 2000. And this "was a COPYRIGHT ISSUE". Ooo I'm post whoring #3 here. I forgot to mention that every wall in my room was filled with every album cover (at the time), Poster you could buy, "bootleg" stuff from that underground record store from Berkeley or my Hometown and magazine cutouts. from 83-85. I was also a fan in the mid-late 70s as a kid but got into different musics like Motown and Punk and Glam rock that was dying out like David Bowie and the NYDolls, Iggy Pop.
tsatm2011 10 months ago
My taste in music changes a slight bit over time. But for the past 10 years it hasn't changed much at all. I listen to more dark 70s and 80s stuff. but RUSH and AC/DC and Zep (though common mainstream in the day) were my favorite since Bon (Not Brian), Geddy and Robert's voice all have a tone in which I can sing too (or used to). And somehow those songs lifted me spiritually. BTW Buy BTLS. There is a funny scene where their first Manager (to have been) looks mad he didn't sign them. FAIL!

Again...Did Rush ask the Mark Twain estate for permission to use the infamous "Tom Sawyer" name? If not, they're hypocrites.
dothejcbeat 1 year ago
@dothejcbeat
Ken5244 1 year ago
@dothejcbeat Doesn't matter. Tom Sawyer is in the public domain. Copyrights are for the life of the creator plus 40 years. Wait until Rush is dead plus 40 years. Then anyone can use Tom Sawyer. I'm going to use it to sell a line of prophylactics.
bearmare 1 year ago

I think the problem here lies more in the political leanings of the different parties.

bearmare 1 year ago
Lots of bands don't allow their songs to be used by political campaigns. Back in the 80s, the GOP wanted to use Born in the USA as a campaign theme song. Springsteen's management said No Way. Of course, no one from the GOP actually read the song's lyrics, which would have made it a doubly embarrassing choice for a theme song. As for Paul, he used the song without permission, which is even worse. Rush is Canadian, btw. Why use their song? Paul's people are idiots.
bearmare 1 year ago
I'm a big Rush fan, but come on! Relax a little guys. You've made millions off of Tom Sawyer, but did you invent the name "Tom Sawyer"? Wasn't that someone else's idea? Shouldn't you be paying tribute to Mark Twain? I've gotta say, I'm a bit dissapointed. I thought you were above this kind of thing.
dothejcbeat 1 year ago
@dothejcbeat
Ken5244 1 year ago
@dothejcbeat I'm sure it was the copyright thing, but also RUSH probably doesn't want to get involved in any political party. They may agree with Paul, but they may not. Who knows and who cares, it's their song let them do with it as they please.

I hope Rush sues this guy & wins; this politician "the rules don't apply to me" thing has got to stop...
seattlejohn01 1 year ago

Writing 2112 obviously shows they sure as hell don't like socialism or any of it's evil cousins like facism or communism.
vinnykster 1 year ago
@vinnykster
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244 Well, FoxNews is more of a propaganda piece for the GOP. Even when there was all those bank bailouts under Bush, FoxNews called it "stimulus" and said it was "good for the economy". I guess it allowed all those executives to get their bonuses, so they could spend them on all kinds of shit, which is good for the economy. I wonder how many yachts you have to buy before the economy turns around?
bearmare 1 year ago
@bearmare
Several points to make:
First, your characterization of the GOP using "Born in the U.S.A." as a theme song is incorrect. It wasn't the GOP -- as a party -- using it. It was the Reagan presidential campaign, specifically on the east coast. The GOP didn't use it in any other elections.
Second, songs are used by Dems all the time even though the lyrics have nothing to do with politics. Obama used The Doobies Bros.' "Takin' It to the Streets," which had zero to do with politics.
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244 At least the Dems asked to use the songs. And the Clinton campaign paid Fleetwood Mac for their song. After the Springsteen debacle, the Reagan campaign asked John Cougar if they could use "Pink Houses". Really, these guys don't have a clue.
bearmare 1 year ago
@bearmare
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244 Hey Bonehead? Where did I say that Dems were on a higher ethical plain. The example was that the Clinton campaign PAID Fleetwood Mac for the use of their song BEFORE they used it, which is what you're supposed to do. To infer anything else from that state just means you're on crack, likely jerking off when you wrote, and are illiterate as well.

@bearmare

I can think of nothing better than to herd every single Republican into a giant gas oven and burn them all to the Hellfire they can't stop yakking about.
bearmare 1 year ago
@bearmare

Some think it's a news channel, others think it's performance art." I think we can take that as a confession.
bearmare 1 year ago
@bearmare
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244 Are you really that stupid?! MURDOCH SAID IT. On the air and in front of everyone. Besides, you cares what FoxNews says. Everyone knows who they are and they don't deny it. I think it would be great to have a news network that does nothing but reports about how Latinos are going to take back all of the southwest US because whitey aren't popping them out the way they used to. Wait. They already do. Clear Channel operates a Latino channel that does just that. No one is fair and balanced.
bearmare 1 year ago
@bearmare

@Ken5244 As much as your biggest turn-on is the Beck/Hannity/O'Reilly circle-jerk, with you in the middle of that clusterfuck, of course.

Fox is so far right that anything else to the left of them is liberal
MSNBC is so far left that anything to the right is conservative
That leaves CNN as middle ground..
swinginwang 1 year ago
@swinginwang
Nice try, though.
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244
Like I said Fox is so far to the right that any other news organization is to the left. I mean to Fox supporters all other news stations are leftist liberal leaning.
If you can point out another news organization to the right of Fox, what you say might actually have made sense....but until then.....
swinginwang 1 year ago
@swinginwang
Ken5244 1 year ago
@Ken5244
Fox news got the name "Faux news" for a reason too....
I think you need to actually watch all 3 networks, Having Juan Williams as a panelist isnt equal time, either is cutting off or shouting over a left leaning guest.,
I know its hard to see with your left eye closed....
Fox panders to right, MSNBC panders to the left, CNN reports the news,
... anyone who 'actaully' watches all 3 can see the obvious.
swinginwang 1 year ago
@swinginwang
Ken5244 1 year ago
@swinginwang

So you watch all those Fox shows and you cant observe a right wing bias?....
Most people bleed Fox cant....;)
