  • Awesome vid dude 5 stars :)

  • does make a difference wether or ot the second and thrird engine units are backwards or forwards, i noticed some are in reverse and some forwards and some are both, whats the reasoning behind that is there one/

  • Why do the leading units flash the ditch lights like that? I've seen it alot but never figured the reasoning behind it, can some one answer?

  • Love it!!

  • oh my god 7 locomotives coupled together, what a wonderful freight train is....

  • Nice catch. Does anyone know why the last CRQ was rolling in and out of coal?

  • hope the 710 is here to stay... could be made into 24V710, which can power a SD90MAC

  • Alot of bucket's to push/pull thank's for the great footage.

  • Love to see BIG BLUE!

  • what is that piece of equipment on the deck of the last NS engine?

  • @pele6922 EOD maybe??

  • @pele6922 That's the Helper Link. It allows the helpers to cut away on the fly. It's rarely used though. All the new SD40Es have them too.

  • Thats some train to need 7 loco's

  • Great video. Looks like the Blue Sd40(3338) is surging.

  • In the movie "ApocolyseNow" Robert Duvall had a famous quote which would like to paraphrase: "I love the smell (and sight) of screaminn' notch 8 SD-40-2s in the

    morning"!

  • not sure if coal train is heavier then container train?

  • @PhantomDark21 coal train would be way heavier than a container train 100 ton pre coal car and only about 40 max per container

  • Make our loco`s here in the UK look pathetic. Would love to see and hear that. Sounds a lot better then a class 66!!!!

  • The cycling on the smoke is due to the turbo varying in its rpms. It's a sign of a turbo on its way to failure. When maintaining a steady psi in the block at full throttle, there should be little or no smoke. But, when the psi drops due to a turbo problem, you will get more black smoke. When they completely fail, you get mega black smoke!

  • @awp290engineer the engines dont all increase at the same time its like moving furniture around if the guy in front starts to slow down the guy in back picks up more of the work same thing here. i went to school working on diesels if the turbo was going out it would have constant smoke that smoke there is from an engine going in and out of under load condition

  • @awp290engineer But why would it cycle so consistently? I'm not a train engineer (but i did stay at a Holiday Inn 5 years ago)

My first impression with that symptom would be pulsing fuel delivery, possibly week pump or dirty fuel filters. Do you have experience fixing these symptoms with 645 and 710's?

  • Thats what I like about NS is they use SD40-2s like railroads should. Unlike BNSF or UP uses those WideCab engines way too much gets old and boring.

  • Hello

My name is Bert de Koning from the Netherlands

I have a Question;;Those loco's on the rearend...is there a driver on board...or are these engines remote controlled...

    Greetz Bert

  • @bertdekoning Bert, The SD-40 locomotives on the rear of the train have the typical crew of 2.

  • 710s and 645s in run 8 together! AWESOME!!!!!

  • Wow, Amazing video, the trains here in the UK are tiny in comparison to these :O

  • I would have loved to stand on the catwalk of 3338 with a camera for this lash up! The sound is deafening! No worries, I have a good set of ear plugs! lol!

  • i never seen 4 dpu's before i rarely see three!

  • Nice video!!

  • Hello. My name is whistle700.

It is a great force. Very very strong.

    In Japan, are not considered.

    Thank you shoot. ★×5!

  • freaking amazing!!!

  • These have 16 cylinders 710 engines right?

  • @panamcunard The three lead units do. The SD40-2s all have 16-645E3 two strokers in them.

  • what are class lights?

  • Like the great sound of 567c thundering away into history, the rumble and whine of 16 cylinder 645e3a diesels will slide into history soon. Enjoy there music ,i sure do

  • @inrun84me The E3A was applied solely to the DDA40X. All other 645's were E3's.

  • @inrun84me Most of the rairoads are having extened life programs. (Except BNSF. Most of the SD40-2s are gone from them.) CSX is rebuilding their SD40-2s and SD50s. NS is also doing it too. UP has had a turn around, and is rebuilding, INSTEAD of retiring the majority of SD40-2s. If anything, we must remeber UP's standard cab C40-8s. THEY are on the cutting block now

  • I had the privelage of being in a conrail 60i on a ns cabride that is now sadly black and white

  • Be happy for black and white, all we get here is Armor yellow and Heritage paint

  • The SD40-2 are very awesome by the sound! These are my favorite US-Diesel Engines! Five stars from me. Twostrokefan!

  • very, very cool

  • Those Conrail Engines LOOK LIKE SHIT!!! with their Red Class lights removed.. Im so pissed off at NS and CSX for removing these lights from their units!! They defaced them and made the locos look like shit!! the class lights were the EYES of the units.. Now they all run blind! Arrrg!

  • I agree but CSX left most of the class lights intact.

  • did you now that conrail horns are ugly sounding

  • Relax.

  • i know, that and the horns are what made conrail awesome!!!

  • here in mexico we to turn on the class lignts even not need'em (no longer work with standar system, now mostly by track warrant) just because we like how they look.. usually one red, one green.. very patriotic.. jejeje

  • @EsPeSD40T

I'm so pissed it has taken CSX and NS over 10 years to paint all these ugly conrail engines into black and blue to get rid of that awful conrail paint

  • @EsPeSD40T hah, we had a MP15 and an old conrail engine for switching duties in my yard and it still had the red lights (they are disabled)

  • This is sooo cool!

  • An all EMD lashup, LOVE IT!!!

  • Nice flashing ditchlights on the SD60I! Nice catch!

  • What's wit the Conrail puffer SD40? Was it slipping?

  • maybe its being controlled by remote control from the lead, supposedly that can cause it to throttle up and down like that

  • could be....not sure. Im gunna have to find this out.

  • The engine in slipping what happens is the engine loads down thats when you see the smoke when the wheel slips it takes the load off the engine and it revs so the engine cuts the fuel off a little bit when it sences no more slip it pours on the flue thats when you see the back smoke

  • that or the load regulator is a little out of calibration... It's too rhythmic to be wheel slip... The system backs off, then it pours it on, but too much, so it backs off, a bit to far, then pours it on again. It's basically and unstable control system. Long way from the heart though, she'll pull till the day she's retired.

  • OHHHHHHHH YEA!!!!! Ahh man, my back ones were definitely a hell of a lot SHINIER, but yours definitely SOUNDED better!! But I just gotta ask, if they ran the ALMIGHTY 536 up 2 that day...then what the HELL was coming up track 1!!!

  • Nice catch! All ex Conrail units leading! Long live the big blue.

  • you wouldnt say that if you had to ride on those crap engines for 12 hrs. haha

  • Looks like the Conrail SD40 needs a little work. 5 stars

  • I'm jealous man! To catch a Conrail Quality SD60I I have to wait several months and go out at 3:00 AM to get my shots. Sweet video!

  • Blue COnrail!!!!!!!!

  • absolutely awsome one of my favorite coal trains

  • Wow. I think I am in heaven....!

  • WOW.I bet that shook the ground.

  • GE's suck! lol but good video

  • no, Dash 9's suck. Dash 8's rock.

  • GE's dont suck. They get the job done just as good as an EMD. If they sucked so much, NS, UP, BNSF and CSX wouldnt have new ones in their fleets rollin along side new EMD SD units.

  • Man you can't beat that sound. Great catch!

  • Great Catch!

  • Sounds like maybe you should have got behind that last unit and started pushing! Long Live Conrail!

  • you should have went down there and shot the hole train because i love the squeal of those breaks

  • damn man i cant tell you how much i love this video! and that sd40 in conrail paint i saw a couple years ago i think at syracuse NY!

  • Holy Crap eric!! I have never seen that many Conrail Units together( Well in a LONG time) They sound Great! Nice Work, Andrew

  • An entire ex-Conrail lash up, now isn't that something? Thanks man!

  • love conrail blues!

    gorgeous last shot

  • Didn't know 536 still runs in daylight

  • Great video! Is that extra smoke from wheel slip?!

  • Not sure... probably a skip in the engine since it seems to occur in a repeating pattern.

  • And right here is what I love to see! From afar, it looks like a legit Conrail coming at ya.

Those SD40-2s sure do sound great when theyre using their horses to push.
