i was there in 2007 -2008 with 25id and i work in the 3rd IBCT 25ID in the FECC and what was reported to me was after the area was contained eod reported it was a old WP round leaked and cause a fire that turned in to this. SGT BLEVINS. former Bronco 45
@dusty7924 I was there as well as part of the 506th Civil Engineer Squadron when this happened. It was a rocket that started the fire. We had at least one heavy equipment operator (dirt boy) on the way to the fire when they decided to evac and another not far behind him. I was a heavy equipment operator myself, we were in our modular dorms at the time. It was pretty cool seeing that stuff go up.
Hey gmillerl it was not a mortar, we never got mortared at KRAB. it was 2 107mm rockets, and it was actually just before 10pm, not 11pm. I just want to be accurate ok.
@AntithesisFilms Remember when Shankey used to say corny shit like, "SF RANGER'S, HUA!" omg that dude was funny.. to laugh at. I am pretty sure I clearly remember there being mortars at that time since I was on the Tac For and we DID find mortar tubes AND mortars around the bridge. Anyway, I also recall this was an enemy rocket that started the fire which spread to the dump. I was there and wide awake getting my mac on outside Mod 7 at the time, smoking a newport, in board shorts and PPE.
I wrote the official report that went into the history. I also have the videotape from a WSTI surveilance camera that shows the impact and subsequent fires and explosions. There is absolutely no doubt about what happened. It was a 107mm rocket, not a mortar.
yea i was there with the 25th, I ran the Ammo Dump with our fellow AF crew who was waiting to catch a plane that night to go home. Im glad they didnt blame us for all that happening, but we were famous for a long while
I was project manager in charge of clean up of all UXO left over from this night and the remains 0f bunker 9A. The project lasted from October 2008 to december. I have never in my life seen so much UXO in one place. We unearthed almost daily 5 250 & 500 lb soviet FAB bombs, ZAB bombs, over 5000 misc projectiles. At the end I was amazed all of us still had toes fingers and no accidents. And I as well am amazed that no one was killed the night this bunker cooked off.
I was the Defense Force Commander at Kirkuk AB when this happened. It was a 107mm rocket, that started it. AF personnel of 506th ESFS did a fantastic job of clearing the area before the explosions began and saved a lot of lives that night. The Air Force Security Forces performed flawlessly as did our Army partners with the 25th ID who did everything we asked of them, as well as the Air Force Fire Fighters who kept this puppy from spreading to the fuel dump and the air field. Nobody was killed.
Hey I was there too!

It was actually caused by a rocket. Kirkuk never got hit by mortars in 2004. 107, 122, and 155mm rockets only.

I've heard everything from a rocket, to a mortar, to artillery. Everyone has a different idea of what happened.
