  • Unbelievable!

  • I have so many favorite MF tunes, and this is definitely one of them. It still moves me.

  • So much respect for Maynard. No matter how hard anyone tries nobody will ever be the same. Such an inspiration. Also, if you liked this check out bill chase's River.

  • Real shame that this video isn't in better quality.

  • 8:29

I thought maynard could only go up...

  • holy cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that was insane from from start to finish!!!!! what a trumpet section. every trumpet player needs to watch this vid...thanks for the post...and boy do we miss the Boss.

  • 9:05 = WTF

  • I love the firebird! I've been a Maynard fan since I played trumpet in high school. This is the first time I have had a chance to actually see the firebird. I want one!

  • @3kingkool I had a Firebird from about May 1987 until June 1990. Wish I'd never let it go, would love to get it back but the guy I sold it to sold it, that guy sold it and he can't remember who he sold it to. Great horn!!!

  • @PIR8KINGBOC ...and they're hard as hell to find, too.

  • what the " is that aperatus?

  • Its called a Firebird, a Maynard original. Its a trumpet with a trombone-like slide valve. He also invented the Super-Bone, which is a trombone with valves like a trumpet.

  • @lonnied123 I can't speak for the Firebird, but the Superbone is not just a valve trombone. Valve trombones were around way before Maynard. The Superbone has valves AND a working slide so you can use either...or I've seen some people use both at the same time when showing off.

  • @lonnied123

Yes, the "Firebird" was a model made by "Holton" (as the "MF horn" models). I tryed one of these instruments some years ago... But was never able to make correct use of the slide.

Holton have also in his catalog at this this a "Don Ellis" model with 4 valves (the 4th for quater tones).

  • amazing! the best trumpet performance I have ever seen! The 5 are awesome

  • FIREBIRD!

  • This is to MF as Whipping Post is to the Allmans..........

    RIP, Maynard.

  • the first live concert I ever attended was this tour back in 77'. I was 14 and Peter Erskine popped my cherry!! Damn to only have Maynard back. RIP! You are dearly missed!

  • WOW! That second solo is a bullfight in and of itself.

  • great clip of the BOSS

    priceless

  • Love the Firebird sound, thanks for the video

  • yeah which begins at 0:37 until 1:57 at the end. this is like the intro to the piece.

  • i think this was in canadian band stage festival

  • Incredible clip, thanks for posting. Anyone know which show this was and why in the world it has never made it to DVD? It looks like the one I caught the tail end of on BET one night a long time ago, LIVE from Toronto or something. I threw a tape in and caught the end of Stella by Starlight and an abreviated Pagliacci but then it ended and I always wondered what other tunes were in that show. Might be the same show? Would love to see the whole thing. God bless The Boss!!!!

  • @scrimnot Yes, I too would like to know where this came from! This is by far the best performance of this piece.

  • The fellow after Stan Mark is Joe Mosello.

I got to see this band three times between April and June, 1977, in Atlanta. When all the trumpets walked out into the crowd, whoa!!

Stan Mark, Dennis Noday, Joe Mosello, and Ron Tooley. What a group!

  • @tlmaddox

How lucky you are to have seen this lineup. Nothing, and I mean nothing, today holds a candle to this.

  • @tlmaddox Maynard always had great musicians, but this is probably my favorite MF trumpet section of all time. Life hasn't been the same since he passed away.

  • wow this is my most favorite song to hear mf play, and it sucks that this is the only live version! why!!!!!!!! Oh great maynard ull always scream in my heart! live on!

  • who's the other trumpet players on this video? the guy after Stan Mark has got great pitching

  • whoever he is he sounds just like Al Vizzutti

  • I'm not sure but perhaps : Stan Mark (the first, with "afro" hair), Joe Mosello, Dennis Noday, and Ron Tooley.

  • yep

  • Classic MF. It's ALL about the MF Big Band.
