That Santa Cruz Guitar is beautiful, I might be getting his guitar from my aunt linda who is larry rices wife ( tonys sister inlaw) which was given to my uncle larry from tony with his own hand writtin signature on it. I hope it happens.
Hello Stu, thought I would encourage you to buy the Martin by letting you,in my humble opinion, hear a D28 at its best. This guitar was owned by Clarence White and was given to Tony Rice (my hero) by Clarence's widow when he died. This is crosspicking par excellence, Note that the soundhole has been enlarged at some time. How good a C F &G can sound eh.
@dscho1 i believe that this is from his instructional video titled "an intimate lesson with tony rice." if it's not that one it's "the tony rice guitar method." but i think that one is later than this. hope this helps!
Of the three greatest bluegrass flatpickers (Tony, Norman Blake and Doc Watson), I think Tony has (or had) the best voice AND the most skill on the guitar. Just my opinion, but his guitar could sound like 3 separate guitars playing at the same time and still pour out a sweet melody. Watching him get together with Doc and Norman on Salt Creek still blows my mind.
I love this piece.. never grow tired of it. But he is also using his middle and ring fingers on occasion, not only on this piece but on other vids Ive seen. Whatever makes the sound I don't care. Legendary and visionary musician.
I just saw Tony Rice Unit and I met Tony back stage......He was the most gracious Artist Ive met.....and he was holding his D-28 and did a little riff and I was the only one around to hear it....it was an amazing moment for me, being an aspiring artist myself. Go see Tony on this Spring tour ! His band is top notch!
Most likely, the people that are not fans are just young. No need to be insulting. At one time I wouldn't give this the time of day but then I grew up. This whole wiggers thing and other racial epithets is just you lowering yourself to make a useless point. Music is just another vocabulary that sometimes is misused and sometimes hard to understand but we will never be able to enlighten or share if we use negatives instead positives. This guy is amazing and a real inspiration.
@JolluliHome I shoot him dead if i meet him. Good Lord. Tony knows to slow down and speed up at the same time. Its not enough to play fast you got to be back and forth at the same time. Tony is a king
@RootsinBrooklyn Guess you know that D-28 Martin guitar of Tony`s at one time belonged to another flat-picking titan,Clarence White. It has a much larger than average sound hole,no dots on the fret board, and there is no Martin trademark on the headstock.More great bluegrass has been played on that instrument than can be imagined!
Thank you YouTube for allowing the world to see this... I always get a kick out of Tony, I remember seeing him 20 years ago and always thought the world of Him..
@Ineedwords1121 Saying that Tony can't pick is like saying a rabbit can't run, a lion can't roar, and a bird can't sing. There is NO ONE ON EARTH who can pick as good as Tony can....even on his worst day.
@D28CWB Well, as a fan of many genres...hiphop is good...just not the gangsta rap... listen to The Roots live...they have a guitarist named captain kirk (Kirk Douglas) who is one of the greatest guitarists i ever heard
Not only an amazingly beautiful piece, but incredibly difficult... and to make it sound right you have to make it sound like it's the easiest thing in the world to play. Tony is a master, to say the least.
@thinkpad20 Very well put. Tony says that rhythm guitar (bluegrass) is harder than lead in many ways. And to play this kind of tune, you have to have the velvety smooth rhythm strums that only come with mastery -- plus, you have to be pretty adept at picking big, clear, bell-like lead notes, and then you have to do them both at the same time! Not many people on the planet can play this style of guitar well....
@peerman2006 It sure looks like Clarence White's Martin, specifically from the enlarged soundhole. I played a Martin CW signature copy, what a sweet sounding guitar!.
@peerman2006 That specific guitar has a very speckle-y tortoise pick guard. Tony acquired that guitar from a bar owner well after Clarence died. You can read the story of that guitar on Tony's website.
@DaMuttzNutz I was just wondering the same - it looks like he hits the sixth string occasionally with his middle finger. This is my favorite Tony Rice right here....
Great picking and singing Tony,I'm to old to learn a new style. I'll just have to listen to you and stick with thumbstyle guitar...Thanks for posting this tune...Bill Futrell

PickJo - "Tony rice's singing face" Back to the Fall of 1968 in First Marines on an operation near Charlie Ridge there was a battalion radio operator who carried a guitar into the bush with him. Of an afternoon he would sit down on the edge of his fighting hole a few holes down from me and take out his guitar and pick out a few tunes before things got serious for the night. He looked just like this guy. He would sit and pick for a half hour or so and then secure it and tend to ...
This rendition brings a subtle (okay maybe not subtle) element of sadness. But it's not a downer. It's just a healthy sadness. Kind of like joy. It's the type of sadness that's really joy.
@sangolt88 I agrree with you !!! You made me laugh !! The fingers on his left hand move so quick and precise, it made me think of watching one of those computer controlled mechanical assembly machines that put together a whole radio, or whatever, in 2 seconds or less.
