  • If I we're his father.......I would be tearfully proud. He's incredible.

  • this is the first tony rice video ive ever seen and im blown away!

  • Master of Bluegrass guitar !

  • Beautiful song, and superb playing by Tony.

  • Awesome playing and singing!

  • I love you...

  • THIS MY 2nd cousin yall!!!

  • Turn on the captions and you get some pretty screwed up lyrics...made me laugh

  • That Santa Cruz Guitar is beautiful, I might be getting his guitar from my aunt linda who is larry rices wife ( tonys sister inlaw) which was given to my uncle larry from tony with his own hand writtin signature on it. I hope it happens.

  • Thats my uncle right there playing. Him and my uncle Larry are the best that bluegrass will ever have.

  • @MattieMoe2009 Hey dude, where do you live? in NC like me? :)

  • Hello Stu, thought I would encourage you to buy the Martin by letting you,in my humble opinion, hear a D28 at its best. This guitar was owned by Clarence White and was given to Tony Rice (my hero) by Clarence's widow when he died. This is crosspicking par excellence, Note that the soundhole has been enlarged at some time. How good a C F &G can sound eh.

  • @savemyplaylist What an ugly thing to see posted on such a beautiful recording.

  • what time signature is this in?

  • @nubnubs27 4/4

  • @nubnubs27 4/4

  • If I could be as good as Tony, my life would be complete.

  • I love bluegrass music for this reason

  • tony...........................................

  • I was born on church st. and believe me Tony hit the nail on the head

  • Tony's skill level is of the highest order. He plays with so much confidence & it's all clean & well articulated.

  • Grymt bra

  • does anyone know where I can get the complete lesson of this from these clips?

  • @dscho1 practice, practice, practice! then learn it by ear/watching (sorry to sound like a dick)

  • @dscho1 i believe that this is from his instructional video titled "an intimate lesson with tony rice." if it's not that one it's "the tony rice guitar method." but i think that one is later than this. hope this helps!

  • Long may you ride Tony , you're the best flat picker ever ! :)

  • does anyone know if there is a tape of tony rice and norman blake doing LINCOLNS LAST TRAIN RIDE THANKS

  • Of the three greatest bluegrass flatpickers (Tony, Norman Blake and Doc Watson), I think Tony has (or had) the best voice AND the most skill on the guitar. Just my opinion, but his guitar could sound like 3 separate guitars playing at the same time and still pour out a sweet melody. Watching him get together with Doc and Norman on Salt Creek still blows my mind.

  • saw tony rice at watseka theatre watseka illinois in May. Tony was incredible. I am going to Ricky Skaggs also in watseka on august 26. cant wait.

  • My dad covred this song alot my dad is kick ass at guitar...the best I have EVER heard

  • I love this piece.. never grow tired of it. But he is also using his middle and ring fingers on occasion, not only on this piece but on other vids Ive seen. Whatever makes the sound I don't care. Legendary and visionary musician.

  • absolutely mindboggling!!!

  • all heart

  • Such rhythmical pluckage!

  • man i wish... this is soo coool i love this style of playing but i have never been able to keep up it's so inspiring

  • i love this

  • Wow, he's really amazing. It looks like he has a couple extra thumb-joints.

  • Holy Legendary. The wink at 2:36 humbly recognizes it.

Google Island in the Mountains Fest and come join us on the island.

  • oohhh pick it tony

  • oohhh pick it tony

  • Amazing. Tony rice is just amazing.

  • fantastic tune. he's got intense eye contact!

  • I like the little wink he gives at 2:36. Great entertainer, under-appreciated.

  • this makes mewant to throw my guitar in a fire lol

  • @Elkins2424 It makes me want to learn to play like this but then I just stop plauing altogether...

Well, at least you can have a nice fire!

  • A long long long time ago. He is The Man.

    It's fine. Good !!

  • A long long long time ago. He is The Man.

  • I just saw Tony Rice Unit and I met Tony back stage......He was the most gracious Artist Ive met.....and he was holding his D-28 and did a little riff and I was the only one around to hear it....it was an amazing moment for me, being an aspiring artist myself. Go see Tony on this Spring tour ! His band is top notch!

  • unbelievable right hand technique...

  • what year was this recorded?

  • Most likely, the people that are not fans are just young. No need to be insulting. At one time I wouldn't give this the time of day but then I grew up. This whole wiggers thing and other racial epithets is just you lowering yourself to make a useless point. Music is just another vocabulary that sometimes is misused and sometimes hard to understand but we will never be able to enlighten or share if we use negatives instead positives. This guy is amazing and a real inspiration.

  • who in the blue hell disliked it ??

  • @JolluliHome I shoot him dead if i meet him. Good Lord. Tony knows to slow down and speed up at the same time. Its not enough to play fast you got to be back and forth at the same time. Tony is a king

  • Great song, great voice, incredible guitar - playing is wonderful (what a right hand!!!), and instrument's tone is extraordinary.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Guess you know that D-28 Martin guitar of Tony`s at one time belonged to another flat-picking titan,Clarence White. It has a much larger than average sound hole,no dots on the fret board, and there is no Martin trademark on the headstock.More great bluegrass has been played on that instrument than can be imagined!

  • I thought you had to use autotune to sing...

  • sweet sounds..Mr Rice is the man

  • Comment removed

  • this is what real music sounds like

  • Thank you YouTube for allowing the world to see this... I always get a kick out of Tony, I remember seeing him 20 years ago and always thought the world of Him..

  • If there is a better flat-picker, I haven't heard him. Tony Rice is a master.

  • Greatest flat-picker EVER.

  • 1:00 I WISH my right hand was that fluid!

  • This is true talent. The opposite of what you see at the Grammys today.

  • Amazing how much he gets out of the C shape.

  • That was one of the most incredible old time recording's I've ever heard. The man's an inspiration for songwriters.

  • tony rice unit comes to the watseka theatre watseka illinois on saturday may 7, 2011

  • wow this is good.

  • SO NOSTALGIC!!! I love it!

  • SO NASTHALGIC!!! I love it!

  • the camera man is retarded..

  • there's a lot of pickin' here on you tube, but nobody can pick like tony :)

  • Tony has been doing some singing with Peter Rowan recently. Just some back up harmony but there is No mistaking that voice!!

  • God, I don't ask for much.

But please give Tony Rice his singing voice back

  • @MrNonoz But mister, his voice has returned! You can catch him singing a bit during a live performance in some video here around YT !!

  • @MrNonoz Yes please! He was and still is one of the all-time all around country greats. But I wish for the same my friend

  • He can't pick for shit... ;)

  • @Ineedwords1121 Saying that Tony can't pick is like saying a rabbit can't run, a lion can't roar, and a bird can't sing. There is NO ONE ON EARTH who can pick as good as Tony can....even on his worst day.

  • @geldridge Lol... I was kidding dude. He's the best picker I've ever heard.

  • 11 people who watched this video have no idea what good music is supose to sound like.

  • wow i just went from listenig to voodoo chile to this quite a change.

  • @guitarfreakRSS Nothing wrong with that!

  • man, this makes me miss some of my ol' guitar pickin' friends

  • Wow

  • the people who disliked it were wiggers and rappers who finally found a good song and thought they were clicking 'dis i like.

  • @D28CWB DIS I LIKE!!!!!

  • @D28CWB Well, as a fan of many genres...hiphop is good...just not the gangsta rap... listen to The Roots live...they have a guitarist named captain kirk (Kirk Douglas) who is one of the greatest guitarists i ever heard

  • @D28CWB hahahahaha. thats effin funny stuff man. thankya

  • I love his smile/wink at 2:37

  • When Tony plays, does he anchor his right hand on the guitar with his pinky finger, wrist, or is it completely free-floating the whole time?

  • @lukeman3000 Free floating most of the time :)

  • This dude is seriously the smoothest-picking son-of-a-bitch I've ever seen

  • No matter what you say, this song sounds amazing, guitar and voice... It gives you a real appreciation for bluegrass/ blues...

  • Love the blues

  • Not only an amazingly beautiful piece, but incredibly difficult... and to make it sound right you have to make it sound like it's the easiest thing in the world to play. Tony is a master, to say the least.

  • @thinkpad20 Very well put. Tony says that rhythm guitar (bluegrass) is harder than lead in many ways. And to play this kind of tune, you have to have the velvety smooth rhythm strums that only come with mastery -- plus, you have to be pretty adept at picking big, clear, bell-like lead notes, and then you have to do them both at the same time! Not many people on the planet can play this style of guitar well....

  • @peerman2006 It sure looks like Clarence White's Martin, specifically from the enlarged soundhole. I played a Martin CW signature copy, what a sweet sounding guitar!.

  • Ain't hardly nobody can touch that sound

  • Is that The guitar? The one that Clarance Rice sold to him?

  • @peerman2006 it was actually given to him by White's wife, after his death.

  • @peerman2006 That specific guitar has a very speckle-y tortoise pick guard. Tony acquired that guitar from a bar owner well after Clarence died. You can read the story of that guitar on Tony's website.

  • This guy is so perpetual.

  • He is playing that with only a flat pick, no fingers. that is amazing.

  • If feelings could be expressed in a single sentence, it would be the longest sentence ever made. Beautiful song.

  • Ever wonder how to make a 6 string guitar sound like a symphony?

  • @deadstrings01 : Hand it to Tony Rice, God bless him.

  • @deadstrings01 Yeah, you hand it to Tony (MF) Rice.

  • @deadstrings01 Tony's technique is astounding. Is he just flat-picking or does he use the other fingers on his picking hand.? I can't tell.

  • @DaMuttzNutz just flat picking

  • @DaMuttzNutz I was just wondering the same - it looks like he hits the sixth string occasionally with his middle finger. This is my favorite Tony Rice right here....

  • @deadstrings01 "Exhibit A" - Tony Rice.

  • @deadstrings01 Answer: Tony Rice.

  • probably my favorite song of all time you just cant get any better pickin than this right here fine fine job

  • Great picking and singing Tony,I'm to old to learn a new style. I'll just have to listen to you and stick with thumbstyle guitar...Thanks for posting this tune...Bill Futrell

  • How is possible to give this a thumbs down, probably modern r&b or hip/hop fans that are confused by a song that doesnt contain the words "bitch or ho" and a computer isnt responsible for the instumental

  • @erico1977 I agree with you. I have played this video for a lot of my friends that are into all sorts of music and everyone of them just love this.

I can not imagine anyone being thumbs down on this one.

This video is a legacy in itself .

    Travis

  • how could the 11 people dislike this there just an oddity at best

  • What a subtle and soulful version of a deep and lovely classic song! I'm sure Mr. Blake would approve heartily! This interpretation is for the ages. Thanks! May we not forget the poor and forsaken in these tough times!

  • PickJo - "Tony rice's singing face" Back to the Fall of 1968 in First Marines on an operation near Charlie Ridge there was a battalion radio operator who carried a guitar into the bush with him. Of an afternoon he would sit down on the edge of his fighting hole a few holes down from me and take out his guitar and pick out a few tunes before things got serious for the night. He looked just like this guy. He would sit and pick for a half hour or so and then secure it and tend to ...

  • This rendition brings a subtle (okay maybe not subtle) element of sadness. But it's not a downer. It's just a healthy sadness. Kind of like joy. It's the type of sadness that's really joy.

I love Tony Rice's singing face.

  • He play so fast that smoke is coming out of his tuningpegs.

  • @sangolt88 I agrree with you !!! You made me laugh !! The fingers on his left hand move so quick and precise, it made me think of watching one of those computer controlled mechanical assembly machines that put together a whole radio, or whatever, in 2 seconds or less.

  • I've listened to a lot of guitar players and this is definetly the best in my opinion.

  • If there are any dislikes it must be a jealousy issue. How powerful can one man playing solo get,and in a band situation he becomes magic, it's a tragedy about his vocal decline but he's already legendary and most respected..

  • @xxpervysagexx1 anyone dissing tony rice is either pretentious or jealous you're right... that's like a pop fan dissing michael jackson

  • .....i just can't describe how this makes me feel......

  • As great as a guitarist as he is, nobody seems to mention that he had an AWESOME voice. Too bad he can't sing anymore but his guitar playing is still wonderful.

  • clarence whites d-28

  • what makes tony the best is the clarity and deep sound he makes, and of course doing it with ease and flow.

  • Man, he sure can play!!!

  • best acoustic guitar player ever

  • @kellough248 tommy Emmanuel? and many others...

  • i wish i could play and sing like that

  • I keep coming back to watch this, it has a healing calming and purifying effect it seems

  • Damn that's fine.

  • How and why are there 11 dislikes on this video?

  • @justinge999 im wondering the same thing

  • Tony Rice The Greatest Guitar Player

  • So beautiful!

    How hard is that?

    OMG!

  • rocker just turned bluegrass help me

  • @MAXMAXTON hey buddy im still a rocker but i grew up on tour with bluegrass bands its in my blood if you like the music you like the music if you like rock too you like rock too it flows in your viens just like me you cant "turn" on one type of music or the other it sounds to me like you just got it in your soul hold it there and enjoy and dont be afraid to rock out either

  • Tony Rice has such a cool rolling style. Very efficient in many ways! It does kind of get to you doesn't it!!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • if ever someone deserved to sit and hold clarence whites hd-28 its tony rice anyone disagree? didnt think so............

  • This seriously brings me to tears.

  • I agree. There's something magical about this take, everything is just so...in harmony. Really never gets old.

  • this just never gets old to me. ever.

  • Sam Pacetti? Sam Pacetti??? You're kidding right?

  • I've listened to everything: hank williams, steve vai, coltrane, bartok... but I'm just now starting to get into tony rice. very elegant and restrained, but still a monster. took me a little while to get into him but I have to say I'm lking this.

  • Tony is as GOOD as anyone who ever put a flatpick in his right hand!

  • @thompsonlake are you implying that theres a lefty who's better than rice? :P

  • Dang!

    Tony frikkin Rice everbody!!
