Those are channel designations for stereo or bilingual audio tracks. Channel 1 is the left channel while channel 2 is the right.
As for the player, I'd check for mechanical problems.
You said this player was shipped to you. It could have been damaged in transit.

check all caps and clean the whole unit on the inside that's what i would do
