@Wolfbreak54 Sorry for not answering sooner.. I use an Alinco DM-330MV powersupply in this video.. At my new house im running it purly off a 12V battery bank thats charged by solar.
i to have been warned to stay away away from the 857d my friend who is a ham had that radio, he got it when it was 2 weeks old for $ 550 from a guy that had it two weeks got tired of all the menus and told him to come and get it, that guy bought it brand new from randl electronics in hamilton ohio, i like the ft-857d but if i had the money in hand i would take the ft-450 over the 857d, no hard feelings lol 73's nice review kj4aqv
Yes i used it at home, because when i used it in truck with my amp on and the face off it rfed real bad, not one 857 but 2, i now use an alinco dx70 in the truck with no rf issues what so ever, and im an extra, so please dont tell me i dont know what in talking about, for a radio that does it all its ok if your only using 100 watts, but add power in the mobil and its rf city, as far as the ft 450 not having 2 meters or 440 who cares about the geek bands who needs them, there too easy,
grat radio, just put one in my car with remote mount kit, good earthing is a must, radio audio could be better, default setting sound the best with the equalizer switched off and proc at 50,mic at 50,the rx is good and the dsp works a treat, well made and until recently was very well priced, but with current exchange rates with japan there price has shot up,second hand seen them selling for £450....still very good for money compared to ic7000 or ts480
I hate to say this and noting against you, BUt the Yaesu FT 857 Is an abortion, its the worst radio Yaesu ever produced, It rfs if you use a linear, Its so hard to use the raidio button after button, THE YAESU FT 450 is One of the finest hf radios ever made. Youll see the 857 SUCKS, and the 450 is increadable... they need to pull that 857 off the market because its the worst, I had 2 of them Both had horrible receive, too much going on with this radio.. dont waste your money get a ft 450
Everyone has an opinion.. The radio has worked great for what I do. I also liked the 450, but I needed portability and carrying that around didn't seem like a good idea haha
@fishula You're joking, right? Since you mention a linear, it's safe to say your using it QTH,. So...Since your only complaint seems to be the buttons, have you heard of computer control? The CT-62 cable can be found for less than 10 bucks and there are dozens of FREE full featured applications so that you may run the 857D from your PC.Oh, and to categorically say that the 857 'sucks' shows that you know NOTHING about ham radio. The 450 is a great radio, no 2 M or 73cm, just for starters

Solid overview! I'm interested in this radio as well. Cheers on the 4200 mile contact....that's great! What are you using for an antenna with this rig?
at the time of the video i had a Dipole setup. 140 feet long, center fed with 450ohm ladder line into the AT100 pro auto tuner, worked 80-6m pretty well considering the antenna was up about 90 feet or so in the trees around the house.
If I had to pick just one for everything that I do in the hobby now , id have to say the 817nd. I do alot of hiking and some days I just dont feel like carrying the 857+ batteries to operate it and just want a fast lighter load on my back. At the end of the day 5 watts will do quite a bit and Im sure id manage to be ok with not having more power.
I have had both the FT-817 and FT-857 and I think I would choose the '857 (in fact I did in the end). Reason being, I ran the '817 at 5w all the time and I can do that with the FT-857 as well as having the 100w when I need it and the DSP as standard. I think if I was "backpacking portable" as opposed to my "dump it in the car and drive" portable, I would choose the FT-817 like you. Desert island rigs!
I am thinking of getting the 857. It has been a choice between it and the 450. While the newer filters, sensitive front end and display are said to be better (?), I still like the portability of the 857. I can use it as a base w/CAT software, and then put it in the truck with a hamstick, or take it off road with a small (affordable) 12 v. battery, such as a fishfinder 8 ah one. My question is: how much amp draw is there at each of the lower power settings for HF and SSB VHF--e.g. for QRP?

Good choice for a high power rig. I had the FT817 and changed to the IC703+. I also have the FT-897D and got it for the same reasons you did. The nice thing about the 857 and 897 is they draw fairly low current when turning down the power on the rig. Your FT-450 drew much higher current at the same rated output power levels.
now you need to get a 897d then you have them all .. have fun maybe we will find you on the bands some time i will be working on some videos of the 897 .ldg tunners work 100% 73's kc9kuh
Well, the 450 I loved and worked great!, I have limited use on the 857 so i really cant say how well it will work as a base station. the 450 has more controls on the front panel, and is a little less menu driven then the 857 and 897, so for ease of use the 450 might be a better pick. but really at the end of the day its personal preference, id try and see the rigs in person and go from there.
Hey, Great radio! I had one of them a while back and now have a FT-450. I loved the FT-857 done every thing I need. The only thing I didn't like was that the screen was small. I hope you have some great qso's on it :)
I am curious about your antenna approach. I think I understood that you will be using a resonant antenna and not using a tuner. If you did use a tuner, what would be your lightweight choice for backpacking / field ops? I need to go back thru your prior vids to check . . . did you use a tuner with your FT-817? I'd also like to see your power set-up for the FT-857. Sorry in advance for so many questions! Thank you.
For the 817, I did have a tuner the Z-817 from LDG electronics. I however have not found a need for it. My small roll out dipole is resonant so i dont need the tuner to make up any missmatch. However, at home if i did not have my AT100 i would need it for my multiband antenna to use the 817 effectively.
As far as power goes, I am using two 8amp hour Sealed lead acid batteries in parallel. I am looking at alternative as they are very very heavy.
I was think of this rig too... have you ever tried the FT897?

its 50 watts for 2m, and I think 20 for 70cm. 6m-160m is 100 watts. sorry for the late reply

Aside from the obvious differences like battery, power and size, would you say the 817 and 857 are comparable in relation to rx and tx ?
Also are you able to tell me what the memory management is like for vhf/uhf ?

I have one, but I regret it. It's not for me. I guess it's a fabulous, great, and incredible radio. At least that's what everybody says....

cheers for the video.
Quick question if I may.
Forgoing portability I was looking at either the 857/897 or the 450 for base use.
Any advice or recommendations ?
Would be using an external tuner anyway and the 2m/70cm isn't deal breaker as I have a icom 208h for that.
thanks
