Ah The Milkman's Matinee! I remember my grandfather telling me how he used to listen to Marty Wilson "Spin Some Shellacs From The Old Record Rack." I understand Marty is now making a living selling used 77 DX parts to Pirate Chinese Radio. Hey, it's a living.
And now, New York has no stations, radio or TV, with the call letters WNEW. First the TV station made the slight change after it was seperated from it's radio sisters, then WNEW AM signs off in 92, and just a few years ago, WNEW-FM changed its calls.
I just put up another WNEW video on my channel and have one more in the works. The one up now is the Milkman's Matinee open from 1984, The one coming is the final moments of WNEW Dec. 11, 1992.
I so miss this station. I could only get it at night as I live in NH but it would come in clear as a bell. Even though they played "old people music" I listened almost every night when I was in High School in the early 80's. The nights I didn't listen I would listen to Larry Glick on WBZ in Boston. I have a whole montage of WNEW jingles in MP3, I may have to make a video out of it and post it.
@tallboyyyy I miss it too. Hearing that jiingle again really soothed my soul! We once did a show at the Cat Club in NY, with the Basie Band which was simulcast on WNEW right after Basie passed away, with William B. Williams. That station was an institution! I wish somehow someone in charge would see fit to bring it back, as did WCBS 101.1 fm (another institution) came back.
WNEW was my favorite station growing up in NY. Listened to Knick and Ranger games and great DJ's like Ted Brown, Jim Lowe, Jonathan Schwartz, William B. Williams and the best news department in radio with newscasters like Mike Eisgrau and Mike Prelee. Thanks for posting.
Thanks! I loved this station growing up as a teenager in the 1980's. I loved the Milkman's Matinee and it began a love affair with old music that I still have today. Yeah, I guess it was for old folks....but I'd still wish it were still around. I recently noticed someone selling old broadcasts on ecrater. Too bad nobody's streaming them on the net.
During this period, WNEW-TV and WNEW-AM were owned by Metromedia, Inc.- this was just a gentle reminder to tune in their radio station after Channel 5 signed off....
OMG!!! One of my favorite stations - another time, another place! Thanks so much.

My grandparents used to always listen to that station until it's demise. Then they listened to 1560 WQEW (now Radio Disney).

Yep, my parents had it on in the car, and now they're gone and I miss the station terribly.
