"I got to get together with you girl, by murdering & plundering the planet, because you need all those baubles, gold rings & jewels that are other people's property, so I'll go killing across the planet to get that plunder for you."
@centurion180ad Yep. Well, Page, Bonzo and Plant all made a pact with the devil. We all know Page was huge into Crowley. So it would make sense they would invoke such things. Keep a light heart though, this is still incredible beyond words.
The original song was called How Many More Years by a blues artist called Howlin' Wolfe. It was the done thing back in the day, even The Stones did it. They called it 'borrowing' the song and rerecording it with ur own sound. They did a fab job, what a track, what a band. Loved 'em since I was 16 which was 20 years ago! But their music is timeless. Hats off to Bonham and JPJ on this particular track.
I don't care if this song was lifted from an earlier Yardbirds thing or not -- this is beyond fucking heavy. This is a wilder trip than "Stairway" by far.
I was 17 years old and in our neighborhood we pooled our cash and bought this LP and put it on one of our parent's old fashioned Stereo Console units in the living room and turned it all the way up...............Eargasmic! You thought we dropped acid hearing this for the first time!
I was driving with my friend and I played this song on a cd I made. I turned to him about three minutes in and asked, "doesnt this song fucking rock? my face is melting." He had the balls to say "Nah, not at all." He hates classic rock and says that phase of his life ended when he was twelve and that he's moved on to true music like wiz khalifa and dubstep and shit. I told him to check if his door was open, and made a sharp left turn, he wasnt wearing a seatbelt, he flew out the fucking car.
funny how i see that zeppelins tunes have lasted over four decades now show me a new artist whos music stays fresh for four days maybe a week if they get lucky
Eight and a half minutes of being driven up and down and ripped to shreds and smacked in the face by Jimmy's belting riffs and being pounded half to death by Bonzos mammoth drum assault and having Plants screaming power vocals torn and shredded into my brain!! It's an assault on the senses that only raw Zeppelin could deliver.I feel like I've gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson after hearing this.....Dynamite just dynamite.
@coppercat94 Very true,JPJ just keeps that cool bassline driving along,he really keeps the whole thing from exploding into a million pieces as he does with most other zeppelin tracks. When all the others are going berserk and really lettin loose JPJ is the cool head keeping it together-he is the solid rock it's all built on.
@jjacer1 How Many More Times do I have to say I love JPJ's bass...he's the cool dude who holds it all together while the storm is erupting all around him! JPJ's bassline is the rock that Zeppelin is built on!!
Gosh, its been so long since I listened to this...use to have this album when it was brand new and I was 22 years old...am now 65, but still LOVE this! Classic rock never gets old, but some people do...the music lives on.
This band was like winning the lottery. The odds that these 4 musicians could get together to produce this kind of complete sound that we're listening to here has to be one in a billion.
@shasta1962 The only ones that were into the occult were Page and possibly Jones...Plant and Bonham had nothing to do with it. Jones may not even have been into it. But yes Page was. I am a Christian also
Jimmy's band is the best. I hate how every classic rock song on youtube has idiots talking about how much they hate certain pop artists. Please stop, you're so fucking annoying. Just enjoy the music. Enjoy it loud, the louder the better on this song. It's probably my current favorite on Led Zep 1.
I'm drunk....I sure loves whisky. Love Zep and have for all my 38 years...well, 25 I guess...around 13 when I started to know of a band called Led Zep....lol
Damn, WHY WAS I BORN IN 1992?! Today we got a fucking gay named Justin Bieber and hes getting famous just becouse many hates him and teenage girls who love him.. It was so much better before when Led Zeppelin was on the road, they got famous becouse millions of people loved them, and so shall it be nowadays too, but... this generation.....I don't wanna live on this planet anymore.
@pROTPANDA Don't worry PANDA, the 60's and 70's also had their Bieber equivalents (and even worse). But especially the 60's were a mind boggling experience, that's for sure. Thank God I was a teenager back then. Keep strong my friend, carpe diem.
2 out of 5 in favor of what other albums out at that time? The Beatles? The Who? Stones? Doors (OK..they kicked ass)...Hendrix (ok he kicked ass too)...who?
to think they were blasted by music critics back in the day. A phenomenal band, the best in their genre. Jimmy Page a guitar genius, Bonham, rocks pre-eminent drummer, JPJ among the finest baseman ever and a talented keyboardist and finally the unparalleled rock singer (at the time) in Plant
My 1st zep concert was 1969 in Dallas. I double dated with my older brother. I was such a geek, I wore a plaid sut. We had to step over hookas to get to our seats. Flew to Seattle for my 57th birthday and saw Guns N Roses. There was no aroma. Times do change.
Hey stewardo good call! It only proves the old adage, Those who can not do teach, I guess those who have zero musical ability become music critics. Rolling Stone Magazine has indeed made quite a few momentous blunders in the past. And this is one for sure, 2 out of 5 (?). It's a shame when R&R and/or Blues critics start to believe their own hype and become snobbish elitists. Jazz has for quite some time cornered the market on music genre snobbery.
The violin bow segment gives me chills every time I hear it. The sound Jimmy gets out of that is unreal. I really wish I could find music today I enjoy more than this band but I just haven't.
@frankktillery82 Lol it's cool... But now that I've actually analyzed this song, it's Page playing an e minor half-bar at the 12th fret. The way he gets that sharp tone is with the wah (he presses it down and turns it off as soon as he cuts off the chord). JPJ is playing an e minor or e 5 voicing on his hammond, too.
@MrAdvance2go yea but they made at least 1 good descision... guess whos number 1 guitarist according to them? JIMI HENDRIX now thats somrthin we can all agree on man

@ajchimek Yes, this one of Zep's best--the trademark blues riff in E really make it remarkable. I re-discovered it when I saw Mpls. based rockers "Slave Raider" featured a whole Led Zep medley/tribute in Moorhead, MN 1987!
It's funny...Rob has said many times that he wasn't happy with his vocals on the first album because he was "nervous." I'm sure he was nervous, given the circumstances, but I think his nervousness fits perfectly with the ominous, spooky, kind of threatening vibe of the first album.
Maybe Jimmy made him feel nervous on purpose! Anyway...check "Rosetta West - Underground" for some good raw blues, btw.
My fave Led Zep album. I have listened to this in the past stoned, sober, while driving, while in the shower, while just sitting on the patio, and hummed it in my head at work and NEVER get tired of it. Hey Don and Pete, can you remember listening to this in the winter of 1989 in Don's "jamming room" while everyone else was at the high school hockey game and we were drinking and enjoying this?....good times!
The first 30 seconds or so of this song always reminded me of the music in the old Spiderman (1967) cartoon. I loved that music as a kid and I have loved Led Zeppelin since 1984.
My science teacher played Kashmir in class once. I couldn't help it, but I got up and danced on the table, for the full 8 and a half minutes of the song. It was awesome.

It's not that guitar that's making me rape the replay button... it's the riff itself that JPJ starts...

Growing up at the end of the 60s into the 70s was fuckin' wild, I'm not gonna lie!!!...
I don't think I even own any music produced in this decade.
Wouldn't trade those times or the music for anything...
