That lines is just flat out brilliant & really describe who Batman is.
What I find so wonderful about this film is that it really digs deep into the mindset of Bruce Wayne before he became Batman, and the journey it was to even become Batman.
God this movie was sooo boring. The Dark Knight was slighly overrated but at least there was enough action to keep me awake. Heath Ledger totally owned that movie. BB sucked.

@jairoller4life Fun fact: Scientists today believe it's likely for a Batman to exist with the proper training and budget for equipment. They say it wouldnt happened for a number of reasons, such as the civil disrest and the money it would cost.
This film is just so incredibly well written it's scary. The key to any film is the script and that is what makes Christopher Nolan so effective as a filmmaker. This scene hits home on so many levels, especially when Wayne is talking about what his symbol is and what it will do for the people of Gotham. *Sigh*, now I want The Dark Knight Rises.
Here is the part where I don't quite understand. The Depression was in the 1930s. I am in my early 20s and my GRANDPARENTS were born in the 1930s. Since Bruce is supposed to be in his early 20s in this series, how YOUNG were Bruce's parents when they nearly bankrupted Wayne Enterprise combating proverty during the Depression?
@Dantinus you should pay more attention to dialoges in the movie. Ra's tells bruce theyre organisation has brought down corrupted society's for years. This includes Gotham. Ra's tells Bruce that his league of shadows has tried to bring Gotham down before, using MODERN TECHNIQUES instead of physical violence. they ruined Gotham's ECONOMY, which led to an ECONOMIC DEPRESSION. This means Ra's is partly responsible for the death of Bruce's parents as he pushed Gotham into robbery and stealing.
@Dantinus In the DC/ Marvel Comics Universe (goes for the comics too), certain realistic historic events have a different timeline/ way of going about. Also, In this movie, the timeline for him becoming Batman changed. The day he has that argument with Rachael and she slaps him and he leaves Gotham, he is 23 years old. He studies for the next 7 years and returns shortly before is 30th birthday.

one of the greatest movies of all time. christopher nolans best movies are easily his batman movies, all his other movies are too confusing and seems like there is almost too much thought put into them
@adam145 - Completely agree. I also think Batman Begins is superior in many ways to The Dark Knight because of the origins told of Bruce Wayne and his past. The Dark Knight focused solely on the Joker and his destruction of Gotham (which is understandable). I did miss Wayne's personal story though. Fortunately, The Dark Knight Rises brings the whole story back to Batman Begins and I cannot wait.
@Silentghost45 Yeah, but that's because Maggie G was ugly in The Dark Knight lol. And anyway, all Rachel does in The Dark Knight is die, so it's not a problem.
@alloxxxsaurus I personally like Bale better, not for his acting which is decent but not terrific like the Joker's in Dark Knight, but for his portrayal of a non-campy Batman (the first ever in live-action movies).
I do give lots of credit to Keaton and the first 2 Batman movies that set the tone and style of the Batman franchise, and more importantly, allowed Batman The Animated Series (the gold standard of Batman IMHO) to be created.

@alloxxxsaurus I can agree with your opinion. May I present my own? I believe the best Batman is the one in the Animated Series with the voice of Kevin Conroy.
Ehh I never see from Batman (Keaton) to Batman and Robin how they portray "Bruce Wayne", it's all about Batman and Bruce Wayne is just when he's not wearing the suit. Bale goes more into portraying Bruce Wayne, like his ideals, his playboy style (Look at the scene where he goes to a dinner with 2 girls).
You saying Keaton is better because you just like it is a prejudice, and same as saying an old Samsung cellphone is better than an iPhone 4.
@Mark1Mach2 Yeah :D When I'm wealthy I will want to set up schools and programs in other countries for people to have the same privileges that we have. I'm not going to be a rich dickhead because I know if Bruce Wayne can use his wealth for good I will.
i guess alfreds words were never "where the hell have you been seven freakin years no calls no letters and you go off and play f-in ninja warrior" dont mean to bash im not really just love alfred and bruce in this scence
@chrissmart21 yeah, ur right, but in the script or novelisation (cant remember which) there is a part where bruce finds a place with a phone and calls alfred for the first time.
@KoN1777 thing is i agree with him, over the years we've had the introduction of robin and batgirl and what made them what they were and who taught them to be who they were, the christian bale trilogy is focusing on how batman came to be who he was both in building the batman persona and the emotional and psycological building he needed to become, from facing his first villan, to the nurmerous design improvements he needed to make to his suit to even making his first batarang.
The concept of dramatic examples is nothing new. In Superman: The Movie (1978) Jor-El tells Kal-El during his 12-year tutelage, "Let your leadership stir others to..." And in the prequel comics that came out in 2006 that filled in certain gaps it's even expanded more where during the ship's trip to Earth Jor-El explicitly says that Kal-El must lead by example.
the words that Christian Bale/Bruce Wayne uses here makes this a great scene .
Bruce Wayne: People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I can't do that as Bruce Wayne, as a man I'm flesh and blood I can be ignored I can be destroyed but as a symbol, as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting.
Alfred Pennyworth: What symbol?
Bruce Wayne: Something elemental, something terrifying.
love the scene, the dialogs are great, with this beautiful light...love the humour noir of Nolan, which he uses most of the time at the most dramatic moments as a contrast...
@Mohi212 he's family, so if he ever did, he could never kick him out -- besides, he knows too much! roflol Friends close, enemies closer, Butlers closest of all!! roflol
Don't leave out Michael Caine in this one, when he said "you can borrow the Rolls if you like, but just bring it back with a full tank", I believed he will be an awesome Alfred
one good thing about this scene: it shows that, even after 7 years, Alfred had that much faith in Bruce, that he was strong enough to stay alive and one day, ultimately, return. It must have been hard for Bruce to keep from being found, and Afred had to know that, and he had to know that that represented distrust or rejection of the society he'd come from, on Bruce's part. A pretty amazing reunion.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Imagine that. Two thumbs down for saying that Bruce Wayne came from Comic Books and Bruce Lee was a Real person? Its amazing how ppl think these days.
Alfred is a real trustworthy and loyal person. He could easily have overthrown and dumped "Master Wayne" while he was away 7 years in preparation. But no he didnot. Instead he kept the company together and ran things straight pending the return of his former Boss's Son.
I miss when Christian Bale gave good performances, or at the very least, was given something to do. This scene is what completely sold his version of Batman to me, and had him soar above the rest.
Thus it saddens me that in TDK, Batman just feels like 'anonymous superhero no. 2' as opposed to this compelling character journey. You really have no room to criticize Bale's Batman if you haven't seen BB.
this is the scene where i COMPLETELY fell in love with christian! after seeing this at the cinema when it first came out i started to do some "Bale researching" and now I´ve seen every movie he has been in....at least I think so!
Omg,yessssssssssssss, his sexy ass deep erotic voice, omg, especially when he gets low and to a whisper, guhhhhhhhhhh!!! Love this scene too,I was even more hooked after this movie, soooooooo sexy!!!!
hey, if you haven't seen it or already you should check out 'american psycho'... my favourite christian movie! i don't usually like those kind of movies but he is just so great in it!
i agree. The Dark Knight was better in direction and suspense & thrills...BUT Batman Begins had a much more engaging storyline. like you said, on a personal level with Bruce Wayne.
When his parents died i almost cried...and you could feel it throughout Bale's performance.
then TDK focused on villains so much that Batman was there to just save the day...one villain at a time.
My friend felt same way, i asked what he thought and hes like "idk man, Batman Begins was much more interesting".
Batman Begins had an authentic feel with character. i felt and empathized with bruce wayne and i think storywise batman begins was better, The dark knight had better action n suspense but u get to kno bruce on a personal level.."why do we fall....to pick up ourselves again" a very power message
@hawkman2k7 Bruce Wayne still felt personal to me in Dark Knight. You can tell being batman is taking a tole on him and he wants Dent to take his place. The joker pushes him to his limits, and he's very confliced about what he should do (should he turn himself in or should he endure it like alfred says). And when Rachel dies and he looking out the window of his penthouse, that scene is VERY similar to the scene in begins where he was a child looking out the window after his parents funeral.
there's one line in particular that still buzzes on my head "now i realized what i have to become to stop a man like him", on my view that simply line puts the remaining humanity of bruce into conflict
Best batman! He's soooo handsome!

@jakebiomask I think that's a terrible and shallow reason to dislike an actor, because you feel she's "ugly."
A) Maggie G is better looking than every girl you've ever dated
B) She's actually a good actor compared to Katie Holmes who's lines felt forced at times.
MarcusKiner 6 months ago
@MarcusKiner She's been pretty sexy in some other movies, but she looked like an old hag in The Dark Knight, LOADS of people agree with me.
A) Bullshit. She looked like miss piggy. Also, this is bad looking in terms of Hollywood, it's different than if you see a girl on the street.
B) I don't give a shit, her character was an annoying hag, in both films. Glad the Joker blew that bitch up, as the vast majority of people are.

the speech by Gordon about Batman becoming a symbol, someone that need to be hunted and hated but that criminals respected and feared
masondarko 1 year ago
one good thing about this scene: it shows that, even after 7 years, Alfred had that much faith in Bruce, that he was strong enough to stay alive and one day, ultimately, return. It must have been hard for Bruce to keep from being found, and Afred had to know that, and he had to know that that represented distrust or rejection of the society he'd come from, on Bruce's part. A pretty amazing reunion.

OMG. Bruce Wayne is an idea, Bruce Lee was a real person. Besides, Bruce Wayne learnt it, Bruce Lee lived it.

Imagine that. Two thumbs down for saying that Bruce Wayne came from Comic Books and Bruce Lee was a Real person? Its amazing how ppl think these days.

Michael Caine absolutley nails Alfred. Perfect preformance!

There has never been a bad Alfred, but Michael Caine gives the best performance.
When I heard that he was cast in the role, I had no reservations.
Byrnzi360 2 years ago 5
@Byrnzi360 There has totally been a bad alfred. Have you seen the first batman. Alfred brought a girl that he barely knows into the batcave. WtF??
Then take george clooney's film. Alfred is dying and then his daughter comes along. WTF????

Alfred is a real trustworthy and loyal person. He could easily have overthrown and dumped "Master Wayne" while he was away 7 years in preparation. But no he didnot. Instead he kept the company together and ran things straight pending the return of his former Boss's Son.

I miss when Christian Bale gave good performances, or at the very least, was given something to do. This scene is what completely sold his version of Batman to me, and had him soar above the rest.
Thus it saddens me that in TDK, Batman just feels like 'anonymous superhero no. 2' as opposed to this compelling character journey. You really have no room to criticize Bale's Batman if you haven't seen BB.

amen. you are completely right about Bale as Batman.

My friend felt same way, i asked what he thought and hes like "idk man, Batman Begins was much more interesting".
mhaze210 2 years ago 6
Batman Begins had an authentic feel with character. i felt and empathized with bruce wayne and i think storywise batman begins was better, The dark knight had better action n suspense but u get to kno bruce on a personal level.."why do we fall....to pick up ourselves again" a very power message
hawkman2k7 2 years ago 13
You're so right, man. Really, I think so, too.
DarthMorl 2 years ago
