I got a Sega Nomad for my birthday. It was supposed to have a rechargeable battery pack with it, but the Nomad only works while its plugged in using a GameGear AC adapter. I took off the battery pack and opened it up only to find that it had no rechargeable batteries inside of it. What if I were to put rechargeable batteries made by Energizer inside the pack, could I recharge the batteries using a GameGear AC adapter?
nice review, pointing out the faults and great job pointing out its virtues. I just got one for $80. it wasn't new like yours but it came with a bunch of good game and model one genesis. i could have gotten one of the new gen mobile but it doesnt have video out, second controller port, or replaceable batteries. it was no contest, for 20 dollars more the nomad was the way to go.
howabout buying a everdrive addon and put all your favo genesis games on the sd card and put it inside the everdrive cartride,so you don,t need to carry anny genesis game be with you, hoow awesome is that.
sometimes i wish i was a sega fan,as sega brought manny cool addons and genesis versions and cool games with hich speed, unlike nintendo.
@lartrak "A A" is commonly used as Alcoholics Anonymous, whereas "Double A" refers to AA batteries. When you say "widely used" that may be so, but only because most people are meaning Alcoholics Anonymous.
It was used relatively widely where I grew up in Michigan. Point in fact, people there thought that was incorrect as well, even though it was used regularly.
From what I can gather, it's more common in British English than in American English.
And believe it or not, but I don't find it difficult to distinguish in context when someone is referring to a battery and not Alcoholics Anonymous. I did not somehow conflate the two.
@lartrak Fair enough. It's probably just my bias against Brittish people in general fueling my comment. Aside from all of that i think the Nomad is one hell of a handheld.
Nice video. I was wondering will it play Japanese games. I have been thinking about getting Sparkster: Rocket adventure 2 and have noticed that the Japanese version is cheaper.
I would guess if it physically fits, it would partially work. From my understanding, the Power Base Converter doesn't work as well on Genesis model 2s, and considering how new the Nomad is, its internals are probably more akin to a model 2 than a model 1.
A shame the Nomad can't play 32X games. That would rock. I guess I'll have to stick with my Genesis 2 with th 32X in with the Game Genie in with Sonic and Knuckles in with Sonic 2 in. GEEZ....... That's stacked!!!
It's literally a portable Genesis. I THINK it will work with a 32X stacked onto it, but I wouldn't want to try it, as I'd be worried about damaging the cartridge slot. It'd also be a PITA to hold onto like that.
As is though, it does not have the 32x hardware built in, so it won't play 32x games. It will play the Genesis version of Virtual Racer though (some Genesis clones have problems with the 3D chip built in, IIRC).
ok then, thats good to know. i still want to add it to my collection! I saw one on ebay with a lot of games for around 30-40 dollars! and it said it came with virtua racer!
@KyleReidzilla No, it does not support the 32x, much like the Genesis 3 it cant' do it. This is at least from what I've gathered. And it would be the biggest mess of a handheld if you did manage to plug all that in.
I have a Sega nomad i have played it for 4 hours straight (On batteries)! 4 full games in one sitting. Alien storm, Quackshot, Batman and Castel of illusion (No red low battery warning). If you whanna play even more in one sitting buy a Dc adapter. (More than 4 hours in a row and you sir are hardcore) One of the best controllers sega ever made. It is huge and heavy i give you that but it is heavy quality! Great review! 5 Stars!
The nomad looks cool and all, but i might get a genmobile instead. it has a better battery life, it is smaller, has 20 games built in, and a cart slot. also it cost less. it might have cheaper built quality but i dont really care. i know a guy with a nomad and maybe someday i can get it off him. but for
Nice video. I collect vintage game systems. I have been looking at getting the nomad mostly because I do not really have the room for another console at home or a college I already have nine of them and I do not own a genesis and I want something that can play two players. I was able to find one at a local shop that has the original box and looks brand new not even a smudge on it plus the ac adopter for $80 would you recommend getting one and also how much do the re-chargeable batteries go for.
It works just like an NTSC Genesis. That means it will play all of the PAL games at NTSC speed. There are a handful of games that had their speed properly adjusted for the PAL frame rate (like Alien Soldier). Those games won't work right on the Nomad/Genesis. The rest will.
Yes, but I don't think it would be good for the lifespan of the nomad... You might need to stack it with a Game Genie, which would be really bad for the cartridge slot.
So theoretically you could plug the AV and power from this into a tv, plug in the extra player cables, and use this as a high-portable Genesis? Or do you HAVE to use the screen on the thing for play?
How would you play Yu Yu Hakusho with four players on that screen? o_O
only thing i never got was why they made it oddly shaped... it's not a box for say, it has that weird upward slant on the d-pad side idk if i was sega i would want my system to be sleek to catch your eye. still sega on the go seems fun!
dude great review...i always wanted one of these in elementary school...

Good luck proving that. Both terms are widely used in modern English. Personally, I use each in different contexts.
I'm sorry that this fact angers you so much. Perhaps you should try using your energy in a more constructive manner?

If it's boxed and in good shape with an AC adapter, $80 is a good price.
The battery pack I have is actually dead now. You can get a reconditioned one with new cells, prices vary on that.
Easiest thing is to just get standard AA rechargeable batteries and use 'em in the AA battery case.

lartrak 2 years ago
Fair enough.
In that case, how would you rate it as a "take to another friend's house" portable genesis?
PizzSKat 2 years ago
Pretty good. I'd rather have a Sega Mega Jet for that purpose though, since I wouldn't have to worry about scratching up the screen.

how weak is the battery life on the nomad compared to the game gear or the atari lynx?

I never owned a lynx, but it is definitely shorter on standard AAs than the Game Gear. IIRC, less than half the Game Gear's life.
