I think Russian romantic/modern music reached a kind of perfection, it reached the highest point in terms of expressing human pathos, and we have the unique chance to get back to this music whenever we want to by hearing it or playing it, I don't think we need to /can fill a gap. And I fully share your fascination for this music, I would add Borodine and Moussorgsky to the list.

My favorite piece, the 1812 Overture. I simply cannot help but endorse music that uses REAL artillery. Modern composers and writers could do worse than to follow this path, just think of the incredible array of sounds the present day military produce!
