Although Allan Holdsworth is incredibly smart in the way he plays, i don't like it. This piece has lots of chromatic chords and whatnot, but it didn't have any real authentic cadences which our ears like. even though very impressive from a theory standpoint, i just don't like the way Holdsworth sounds.
@nickheck Agreed. I've always felt that way about his playing. He's incredible, but it's hard for us mere mortals to musically digest and enjoy. I'd prefer to listen to someone like Greg Howe, or Eric Johnson, not that they're better but I can grasp more melodies in their compositions.
I hope you're not basing this opinion on Holdsworth's sound based on a couple videos on youtube, especially one like this (from an instructional video) which is merely a shadow of the original.
But if you have checked out a lot of his music and merely don't care for the sound then that's fine with me. It's not for everyone, and I do think his style took some getting used to for my ears.
@gunther101 Believe me, u will love allan once u start developping knowledge about music etc U might know a lot alreay i don't know because i don't know you but my experience is that allans playing is so genious that u have to grow into it to understand it. 9 out of 10 people don't like him because he doesnt play the usual phrases etc but once u understand what he is doing and what he is trying to say with his music you will love him no doubt !!
I think he is a guitar god... but seriously I think that he should take off that shirt and wash it or something!!!... he is wearing it in almost every video I saw him... or maybe he got wardrobe full of these shirts!!! lol
There's a video somewhere on youtube of Allan and Shawn hanging out at a NAMM show. Check it out if you haven't seen it. It seems like Shawn is totally in awe lol.
Yes i have seen the video at the NAMM show, i watch over it every now and then becuase in my opinion seeing the two greatest musicians in history is just incredibly inspiring and motivates me to keep going with fusion and discovering new ways of playing the guitar.
I have the most incredible respect for Allan and Shawn.
I would dare to think what i would be without them.
House of acid.

Either that, or he has the amazing ability to film multiple music lessons at once...the musical equivalent to a quantum particle.
