  • These aren't hidden - but the game never says what they are - however these enemies must be a harder to kill enemy (if they ever came out to fight that is) and are waiting for deployment.

  • I found the source files for the crab synth today. Looks pretty sweet.

  • @Lasergun45 if you happen to have source SDK (you can get it for free off steam tools) you can open it and view the crab and motor synths. its epic.

  • If you look in source SDK for hl2, they have attacking animations. They were probably cut when valve had to speed things up for there deadline when hl2 ALMOST came out; they ended up delaying it.

  • You know I never really could tell which end was the front piece of the mortar synth. Aerodynamically speaking, the curved part is what I would assume to be the front and the head/claws are on the back like a nautilus.

    And after so many years, I'm still hoping some awsome coder could put all these npcs back in the game in full working order.

  • They have no AI* or models, so you can walk through them.

    They also appear near the end of Half Life 2, but *they were scripted to move*

  • The official Half Life Blog mentions headcrabs, and how it may be impossible for them to survive in artic weather. Maybe these big boys will be replacing them in EP3? XD I wouldn't want one of these latching onto my head.

    Mortar synths are flying artillery pieces. Crab synths are walking light tanks, armed with miniguns and i think a flamethrower. So yeah, i don't think those things would be jumping a your face anytime soon.

    There's going to be an episode three, It's only we know just about nothing about it, besides that the borealis is probably going to be in it.

    They aren't really "Hidden" enemies, they're just cut, I've seen something related to this scene, too. buncha mortar and crab synths on conveyer belts. The concept for this room was probably dropped, but kept as an easter egg.

    The Crab Synth and Mortar Synth wouldn't be included on account of the contrasting designs. They were just, and I stress this part, easter eggs.

  • The mortar synth and Crab Synth were probaly used in the 7 hour war. Now they are just walking around in the Citadel. But Valve might add them in Episode 3.

  • Synths are pretty much advanced Combine Machines, Machines that are designed to be alive, and have mind of their own (well of course they have a mind seen from the Strider in EP2). Synths were major in the seven hour war. These Synths were created by the Combine Citizens, the REAL Combine, not forces, Citizens, from their homeworld.

  • No.. they weren't Crab Synths and Mortar Synths. They are just another type of synth. The entire Combine army are synths. Hunters, Striders, Combines themselves.

    I'd love to see the creatures they modified to make the hunters and striders.

    The only synths you really face in the game is dropships, gunships, striders, and hunters.

  • It is mentioned that these synths were once Alien races but were enslaved by the Combine and turned into war machines, just like those creepy looking stalkers you see in Ep 1

  • Hmmm... almost seems like the crab synth has antlion guard animations. The major difference, is I doubt that the antlion guard has a massive gun underneath it
