No, you don't have to go. It's not easy to refuse, but it's possible. In America they put you in jail for a while for refusing to go to an illegal war, rather than shoot you like the Brits used to do, or the Nazis and Russians. I'd rather go to jail than be put in a situation of killing people who were defending their country from illegal invasion. There's plenty who resisted that war and this one. Check for yourself.

Yes, your politics DID affect the people of Iraq, as the US Govt put Hussein in power to prevent the nationalisation of Iraqi Oil (same tactic in Iran when the CIA installed the Shah). Where should the people PISS OFF to? The US has bases in almost all countries in the world. Should all the Germans, Iraqis, Japanese, Filipinos move to Ireland and Switzerland or what? And yeah, I criticise the Russians, Chinese as well, but they aren't doing half the damage right now that the US is doing.

The war wasn't won (by the people who lived there) via a series of pitched battles, but by the only way the underdog and poor man have to fight--hit and run guerrilla encounters, all of which were lost by the US. The VC no longer existed because they emerged from the jungles and took over, first their land, then their government, after the US ran away--many clinging to helicopter struts. They still run things there today and the folks who perpetrated that war now murder civilians in Iraq.

As for the Viet Cong, they ceased to exist because almost their entire force was shitkicked at Tet. I'll repeat - militarily, the war was actually an incredible success.

The US won almost every major encounter of any implications whatsoever, including huge battles like Khe Sanh, Hue, and Tet. As for the United States "running away," it wasn't due to military inability, it was due to incredible unrest on the home front about the morality of having thousands of US servicemen die so far away from home for...what, exactly? I'm not trying to be condescending, but you really need to research the war a little more closely that what you hear every now and then.

To summarize, don't confuse fighting a difficult, unconvential war with losing a war. The war wasn't lost until two years after the United States left. One thing I think we can both agree on is that they shouldn't have been there in the first place, but that doesn't negate the fact that when they were there, they kicked some serious ass, to the tune of over 1 million VC/NVA dead to about 55,000 Americans. That's roughly 24 Charlies dead for every American. That's called kicking ass.

You are the first 'source' I ever heard say the war was lost in 1977. Napalming peasant farmers working in their fields and throwing civilians out of flying helicopters is known as atrocity, not 'kicking ass.' The US actually murdered close to 2 million civilians, not the 1 million you cite. Khe Sanh was an embarrassing loss, so was Tet. After taking serious casualties at Hue, the US pulled out a few months later, making that a Phyrric 'victory.'Do you flee 'success' on a chopper strut?

I really don't need to read any further because if you honestly think Tet was an embarrassing loss you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground. Do a little research. It was the turning point in the war for public opinion, but militarily, it was an absolute rout by the US, who held or recaptured all territory and killed about 100,000 NVA/VC and the VC ceased to exist after it. It's amazing that some people can deny factual evidence and pretend it doesn't exist. I think we're through.

The VC simply went to their homes afterward and took up their lives again. How can foreigners 'recapture' territory they never owned in a different nation in the first place? I think our little exchange here shows which of us has researched this issue best, however I hold no ill-will toward you for your opinions.
