@photolitherland You should learn how to use the camera first (picture profile). D200 is 10Mpix, D7000 is 16Mpix. So if you use kit lens, on D200 it's ok, but it will be "blah" on D7000. Go and spend more money for a PRO lenses. D7000 with Nikkor 17-55/2.8 makes razer sharp images.
Hi Gordon, I currently own Canon gear, however I am seriously contemplating switching to Nikon, why? Because Nikon allows the use of their old lenses, although completely manual but really nice lenses nonetheless, they are also inexpensive, while the Canon full frame cameras do not allow that without using an adapter. Can you confirm that the Nikon D700 allows the use of such lenses as the inexpensive 50mm f/1.2?
@MrKnnknn I know that this is a late comment, but (correct me if I'm wrong) any lens that runs on Nikon's 35mm cameras will work on their DSLR variants. The even cooler thing is that legacy lenses will only be manual on Nikon's lower-end consumer-grade cameras, such as the D40-D3100. The Nikon D7000-D3x all have AF motors which are, I believe, compatible with Nikon's legacy lenses.
I hope this helps, if you still want to be 100% certain you can always look it up or contact Nikon.
Hi Gordon, would you have any idea if Nikon will upgrade this model in the near future like they do with most of their products? Considering the D700 has been released since '08 I'm assuming it's due for an 'S' prefix soon.
Hi mr.Gordon, i was wandering if you could help me to choose my new camera, i'm looking to a full-frame camera & i can't which one to buy, is it 5D mark II or D700.i'm not into video-photography, so i don't care about this feature in my camera..but i look for image quality & body build...so what you think should i go to!! by the way, if i bought the nikon D700 i will choose those lenses : Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 , Tamron 70-200mm f2.8, nikon 50mm f1.4 .. i hope you can help me..thanks
Hi Gordon, I am a big fan of your videos. I am struggling between a Full Frame such as the D700 and the Canon 7D. I have read a ton of articles on your website. I am not surprised that Nikon has stayed with 12 megapixels, I am surprised however that Canon has moved to a high pixel density on the 7D, I have seen some photos taken with both, using excellent lenses and they both look great, the D700 is within my budget, what should I buy? At 1.4 MP/cm2 + a great lens, how can you lose? Or?
hi gordon, i was just wondering from your opinion does the nikon d700 produce photos better quality of photos that nikon f5 or f6 can take. I think i read somewhere that the films can produce quality that was equivalent to 25 mega pixels
@davestubevid 25 Megapixels is really pushing it for 35mm film. Even if you perfectly expose 50 ISO film and use a top quality pro drum scanner, I think 15 Mpixels is close to the resolvable limit. If your film or scan are lower quality, you could have less than 10 Megapixels worth of real resolution, and just have fuzzy pixels at anything higher. Today's best DSLRs are out-resolving 35mm.
@cameralabs Thanks Gordon for response. I have always had the same idea about that but i wasnt too sure since i have not seen a sample of drum scanned films and cant seem to find any on the web to make comparisons. Do you have articles about this on your website? cheers

@MrGreenBack no you will not get the same quality as the d700 on a d60 because the d700 has a full frame sensor. on the d700 your able to go up to higher ISO sensitivities with less noise and there are more buttons on it for the manual controls plus the handy little LCD screen on the top however the d700 will also empty your wallet because it is very pricey. you can still do alot with a d60 but the 700 has alot more to offer. i suggest you reas up on it on the nikon and cameralabs website
thank you for all your videos all was helpful ... but its possible that you can make video in low lights with the d700 ?? or compare the pics with 5d mark ii ?
@hanshamy1 I think you're confused. The D700 is an FX camera and it has a full frame sensor. Plkease watch the video and read my review and you will understand.
Hey Gordon, just wondering, is there anywhere on C-labs site that has a list of current model Dslr cameras in order from entry to professional for each brand? If there is, I would love to browse through it, as I would like to see what would suit me. I love photography, and I am currently learning the basics, I don't want to go over board and buy something I wont understand. I'm 18 with a limited budget.
@cameralabs, Thanks, but no luck for me. All i could find was products made from #1 to current. I shal keep looking though! Thanks anyway, love the vids!
For you, I'd recommend nothing higher than a D90/50D, or maybe a Pentax K-7.
You really don't want to get something like this or the Nikon D300, simply because the lack of a command dial will make the learning curve especially steep.
@awesome87, I have played with a Canon eos 5D & 7D and I feel right at home with the 7D, since I posted that comment I have become a lot better with dSLR's. I am planning on a 7D in the future, and saving up as much money as fast as I can. It should be 2-3 months before I have enough to buy the camera-lens-card. And I not buying cheap junk for it. Its all going to be Canon-Sigma-Sandisk.
What are those 2 front buttons on the right hand side of the camera? I use a D2s for my job but they don't tell us what the buttons are for since we never need them. But I am curious.
oh what the heck. how tall and big are you? i was hoping that it was a lil bigger, so that it fits my hand better. but it looks pretty small in the video.
I'm new to photography, would D700 be too much of a camera for me to handle? I like the idea of full frame and I am more interested in prime lense.. or should I get Canon 7D instead? The latter looks like a rocket...
if u can afford it sure get it, but if you want to save a bit and then go up u should get the d90 which is an awesome camera for starters. for me i have the d5000 its very user friendly. now i am thinking about getting the d700 because of the full frame.
snifnscratch: i use a canon 1ds III which is also 21 mp. Printing at a4 size you probably wouldnt notice any difference. I print 20x30 inch prints and they come out flawless, id be comfortable going much bigger. Ive heard 5d (original 12mp sensor) photographers say that its not enough for 20x30 inch prints but juuuust ok for a3 size. The 18mp canon 7D with the awsome 10-22mm lens would be a good landscape kit.
The ISO-Noise is much better on the D700 than on the 5D2
I would have bought the 5D2 BUT:
The 5Dm2 is just a studio camera. It hat just 8 AF sensors and 1 cross type focuspoint so that means you cannot "play" with different af-zones so it always focuses the center of the image.
The AF in the 5Dm2 is not optimized for quick movements such as wildlife or sports
The 5d2 is best for portaits
The D700 has 51 AF points and you can better shoot quick movements with it.
I was undecided because I understand that the d700 does provide better quality images.
Then I went on Ken Rockwell`s site and found this:
"For landscape and nature photography, the $2,700 Canon 5D Mark II gives images as good as the $8,000 Nikon D3X, and superior to everything else from Nikon"
which has swayed be back to the canon.
I`m not too fussed about shooting at speed, but want to print large landscape images
wait until Feb. 2010 There are announcements that will be coming out of PMA. Namely Nikon is supposedly going to introduce a d900 which will be Nikon's answer to the Sony alpha a900 and the canon 5d mark ii. So be patient.
I figured that if I get a decent lens (14-24f2.8) then upgrade from the d700 when the 900 comes down in price(?!). On release, the cost of the 900 would be over my budget.
12.1mp is nothing for big prints, especially for nikons high asking price.
What gets me is that a £300 nikon film camera can produce better shots than the $8000 d3x...............
They did a test recently comparing film to the high end DSLRs and actually the DSLRs were sharper than their film counter parts. As for price and what not, I hear you. I am thinking maybe to go D3s and a D900 with the D3s being my general camera and my D900 for my studio work. I am with canon right now though. We shall see. As for the 14-24 that is a BEAST of a camera. Great for telling stories or landscapes.
@FlatHeadedTurkeyInfa "and so thats how jerry the nikon fan boy switched to canon. the end. and he lived happily ever after when every digital slr had a full frame sensor" LOL
you can use both, if you worry about the weith and size the d700 is a little bit bigger and havier than the D90, also the D90 has very good image cuality and good performance at high ISO but the d700 IS WAAAAY better in mage cuality
IF you shoot in RAW Format and you can take the full advantage you should by the D700 (even thoug is more for pro's)
That Ultra WA is pretty awesome. I've heard rumors that the d700 is not good for astro photography? I'm looking to shoot portrait, landscape, macro and astro. Obv this is going to cost me a crazy amount of money. I'm looking to get the 5d II or this. The high iso perf is pretty sweet. Although I wouldn't really have use for that higher iso performance. So I'll probably just get a 5d II, or hmm, maybe even a 50d? I can't really justify spending crazy amounts on L lense on a cropped frame though.
Sounds like the 5dmkII would be fine for you... I use a D3 but I shoot sporting events aswell as journalism/reportage in general.
if you dont need the higher frame rate and ISO coverage like I do then the higher res on the 5dMkII would probably be better for astro, landscape and macro.
are u sure that they are working on a d700x or d800 ? they just came out with the d300s...not even a full frame sensor... I'm waiting on that to but I'm not sure it's gonna happend this year....
D100, D200, D300 series will always be DX sized sensors. they added some HD movie features and processing speed to the D300s as the D90 which is lower in the range was making the old D300 look obsolete. The D700 is just over a year old so I doubt we will see a replacement very soon - its pitched as a D3 in the same form factor as a D300. An improvement to the D3 (not D3X) is more likely in the future than D700
Thanks! I think Live View is quite important, which is why I say a lot about it in the vidoes and reviews. I notice most other reviews barely describe it, so it's good to do something different from the rest. PS - we have a review of the Nikkor AF-S 50mm f1.4G at cameralabs . com...
just done my own review of the d700 and compared it against the d300, so far it is proving very good. still got some more reviews to do on it. but yes this camera is awesome!
I'm upgrading from my compact D60 to a heavyweight D700 next week. Any advice on which 2 lens I should go for first? And as for zoom lenses, which one should I go for? How about Tamron or Sigma lenses? Thanks.
I got the D700 a few months ago and its just awesome! Regarding lenses. I have been struggling with your question too. I decided to go with the motto "buy lenses that you want to keep forever". This means get the most expensive lens you can afford. These keep their value. Top Nikon lenses are more expensive second hand than what they were originally new (!). I went for the 17 - 35 mm pro lens and the 50mm 1.4 G lens. Keep your weight down or you will leave lenses at home and that is sad. Gd luck
I can't decide between the D3 and the D700. I had my mind set on the D3 but the price has just shot up. this time last year I could have got a D3 and that lens for the same price as a D700 kit if I shopped around. £2200 and now the body only D3 is roughly £3400 (lowest price I've found is £2800
If you can afford it, go for the pro-lenses. Don't waste your time with the standard kit lenses. Go with the zooms that offer f/2.8 thoughout their zoom range. You won't be dissapointted.
I just ordered a D700, but, since I am stepping up from a D40, only have DX lenses for the time being. I am aware that the DX crop mode will lower the MP count (which, since I have no need to make large prints, am not entirely bothered by), but would like to know if the drop will simultaneously effect its ISO performance as less pixels = less light gathering. Also, if I forgo the crop and suffer the falloff in quality, does that apply to everything outside the DX frame or just the image circle?
the megapixels do drop yes because it's cropping the sensory coverage. if you only have the standard d40 lens then you seriously need to upgrade if you're getting the D700. and yes d40 to D700... thats one hell of a jump lol.
Believe it or not, I don't have time to shoot with anything other than what I'm currently testing! So the camera I use is the one I'm testing at that time.
wow awesome review. I think i learned more about the D700 in 10 minutes then the 2 hours i spent on the net reading all the articles and stuff... good stuff man keep it up!
I've just ordered this D700 body.... your review of the camera helped me make this decision. I'm looking forward to low light captures. All your reviews are extremely thorough and articulate.. no surprise. Thank YOU, Sincerely, Frederick Dunn photographer
24-70/2.8 is a good lens but the entire zoom range is kinda useless. anything wider than 24 and narrower 70 is going to be far more useful and interesting.
World recession is now. Big companies must understand that the time with prices above 1500 euro are PAST TENSE.If they want to sell products they must retrieved the prices and give people 24mpx sensors, below 1500$.They will not survive if they sell cameras only to rich people.Rich people are less and less every day.
I simply love this wonderful camera! I'm really glad I took the step up from the D300 and I didn't invest in DX lenses in the first place. I've been using mostly 24-70 and 70-200 VR and also my favourite 85mm 1.4. Works like a dream! This camera is simply fantastic in low light conditions, like concerts... Nikon has done it again!
Stopped by the local camera shop yesterday evening and checked this cam' out! Lovely piece of machinery I'd say! I will be grabbing one within the next week! Can't wait!
hi there.i have a d60 n i liked it so much im thinkin of getting into photography hobby. im planing to buy a d700 next yr as im saving up some money. Can somebody tell me what are the lenses i shud buy? i want lenses that covers evrything from macro to telephoto. i need al the lenses in the bag to handle every situation.
Well, you'll need FX format lenses for starters and quality ones to do it justice. These, like the 14-24mm, don't come cheap. See the lens buyers guide at cameralabs . com, and in the lenses section, you'll also find the complete nikkor lens range with prices so you can see how much you'll need to save! Feel free to discuss this further in the Nikon section of the cameralabs forum.
FX is Nikon's name for a DSLR with a full frame sensor, DX is Nikon's name for a DSLR with a cropped frame sensor. See the lens buyers guide and my reviews at cameralabs . com for more details.
D700 doesnt take HCSD and only CF cards??? Why does it take those dinosaur CF cards nobody sells any more?
A good reason for me not to buy the D7000

I'm new to photography, would D700 be too much of a camera for me to handle? I like the idea of full frame and I am more interested in prime lense.. or should I get Canon 7D instead? The latter looks like a rocket...
fridayzet 2 years ago
if u can afford it sure get it, but if you want to save a bit and then go up u should get the d90 which is an awesome camera for starters. for me i have the d5000 its very user friendly. now i am thinking about getting the d700 because of the full frame.
veryboringjimmy 2 years ago
@fridayzet If you are new to photography I would suggest to get a D5000. It's very user friendly and will enable you to learn from the scene modes.

snifnscratch: i use a canon 1ds III which is also 21 mp. The 18mp canon 7D with the awsome 10-22mm lens would be a good landscape kit.
redcarpetphotography 2 years ago
I am returning to photography and am going digital, but I have a conundrum regarding camera choice.
I want to do landscape (with a3/a4 size prints), but would the 21mp of the canon 5d2 provide for greater detail on larger prints than the nikon d700?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
snifnscratch 2 years ago
The ISO-Noise is much better on the D700 than on the 5D2
I would have bought the 5D2 BUT:
The 5Dm2 is just a studio camera. It hat just 8 AF sensors and 1 cross type focuspoint so that means you cannot "play" with different af-zones so it always focuses the center of the image.
The AF in the 5Dm2 is not optimized for quick movements such as wildlife or sports
The 5d2 is best for portaits
The D700 has 51 AF points and you can better shoot quick movements with it.
I'll go with the D700.
FixedHDD 2 years ago
I was undecided because I understand that the d700 does provide better quality images.
Then I went on Ken Rockwell`s site and found this:
"For landscape and nature photography, the $2,700 Canon 5D Mark II gives images as good as the $8,000 Nikon D3X, and superior to everything else from Nikon"
which has swayed be back to the canon.
I`m not too fussed about shooting at speed, but want to print large landscape images
snifnscratch 2 years ago
when you're printing a3/a4 images, nikon is better.
Nikon has also a better picturequality with its D-Lighting function.
But of course, Canon has more Megapixels and you can print larger photos
FixedHDD 2 years ago
@snifnscratch
wait until Feb. 2010 There are announcements that will be coming out of PMA. Namely Nikon is supposedly going to introduce a d900 which will be Nikon's answer to the Sony alpha a900 and the canon 5d mark ii. So be patient.
BigPreme 2 years ago 3
@BigPreme
Thank you for the heads-up.
I figured that if I get a decent lens (14-24f2.8) then upgrade from the d700 when the 900 comes down in price(?!). On release, the cost of the 900 would be over my budget.
12.1mp is nothing for big prints, especially for nikons high asking price.
What gets me is that a £300 nikon film camera can produce better shots than the $8000 d3x...............
snifnscratch 2 years ago
They did a test recently comparing film to the high end DSLRs and actually the DSLRs were sharper than their film counter parts. As for price and what not, I hear you. I am thinking maybe to go D3s and a D900 with the D3s being my general camera and my D900 for my studio work. I am with canon right now though. We shall see. As for the 14-24 that is a BEAST of a camera. Great for telling stories or landscapes.

hay guys i'm realy confuse between nikon D90 and d700 which one i got i use the camera only for family things can anybody advice me please
ahmadzaatar 2 years ago
you can use both, if you worry about the weith and size the d700 is a little bit bigger and havier than the D90, also the D90 has very good image cuality and good performance at high ISO but the d700 IS WAAAAY better in mage cuality
IF you shoot in RAW Format and you can take the full advantage you should by the D700 (even thoug is more for pro's)
but remember D90 is amazing camera to :]
i hope i helped a bit :)!
theroden 2 years ago
are you confused about which camera you got?? OR which one you should get??
nzakharov 2 years ago
forget both. A D40 would be sufficient. You won't need the megapixels and you'd be better off using an seperate camcorder for videos.

I can't really justify spending crazy amounts on L lense on a cropped frame though.
aadoza 2 years ago
Sounds like the 5dmkII would be fine for you... I use a D3 but I shoot sporting events aswell as journalism/reportage in general.
if you dont need the higher frame rate and ISO coverage like I do then the higher res on the 5dMkII would probably be better for astro, landscape and macro.

are u sure that they are working on a d700x or d800 ? they just came out with the d300s...not even a full frame sensor... I'm waiting on that to but I'm not sure it's gonna happend this year....
BogdanLeitan 2 years ago

PS - we have a review of the Nikkor AF-S 50mm f1.4G at cameralabs . com...

DemonicGenocide 2 years ago
If you can afford it, go for the pro-lenses. Don't waste your time with the standard kit lenses. Go with the zooms that offer f/2.8 thoughout their zoom range. You won't be dissapointted.
pamelot5 2 years ago
I just ordered a D700, but, since I am stepping up from a D40, only have DX lenses for the time being. I am aware that the DX crop mode will lower the MP count (which, since I have no need to make large prints, am not entirely bothered by), but would like to know if the drop will simultaneously effect its ISO performance as less pixels = less light gathering. Also, if I forgo the crop and suffer the falloff in quality, does that apply to everything outside the DX frame or just the image circle?
moviemastermind88 2 years ago
That's some jump from a D40 to a D700! Feel free to ask the Nikon owners on the cameralabs forums!
cameralabs 2 years ago
Same for me, I'll ask too. Thank you for your awesome reviews!
DitiTux 2 years ago
the megapixels do drop yes because it's cropping the sensory coverage. if you only have the standard d40 lens then you seriously need to upgrade if you're getting the D700. and yes d40 to D700... thats one hell of a jump lol.

So what camera does Gordon Lang, editor of cameralabs dotcom use when he's shooting on his own and not doing a review for a camera company?

Believe it or not, I don't have time to shoot with anything other than what I'm currently testing! So the camera I use is the one I'm testing at that time.

Well I suppose that's not such a bad deal when you're reviewing things like the D700 and 5dMkII.
ConstantlyQuestion 2 years ago
Excellent review !
I am thinking of buying this but the issue is i cant figure out which lens to buy. Ideally an 18-200 VR would be fine but it aint FX compatible :(
The three choices are Nikon 24-120 VR f3.5-5.6
Tamron 24-135 f3.5-5.6
Sigma 24-135 f2.8-5.6
By the number of opinions I have had Tamron is the best choice. Sigma and Nikon both lose sharpness it seems. Whazz ur take...?
I think nikon should now focus on a good mid-range zoom FX lens... and stop upgrading bodies !! :(

24-70/2.8 is a good lens but the entire zoom range is kinda useless. anything wider than 24 and narrower 70 is going to be far more useful and interesting.

7000$ for 1385 g. for Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III
8000$ for 1260 g.for Nikon D3X.
If they are made from pure gold it will be cheaper. What people pay for.
For IDEA?,for technological develop?
They pay for 1300gr of plastic, glass, little metal parts and huge impertinence of top factories.
They let us technology which is older then 5 years.
In 21 century 24mpx full frame sensor must be standard for every DSLR camera on price range of 500-1000 euro.
My god 8000 euro for what.
KristalSrb 3 years ago
World recession is now. Big companies must understand that the time with prices above 1500 euro are PAST TENSE.If they want to sell products they must retrieved the prices and give people 24mpx sensors, below 1500$.They will not survive if they sell cameras only to rich people.Rich people are less and less every day.
ADOLFAJ 3 years ago 4
Very sensible comment.
Recommendation to factory is:
Full Frame chip 24mpx=2400 euro
Full Frame chip 12.3mpx=1230 euro.
Half frame chip 12.3mpx=Half of 1230=615 euro.
It is unbearably to ask 7500 euro for EOS 1DS Mark III or 8000 euros for DX3.
This is price for Car not for such a trivial thing like still camera.
This is the END of Time of savaging byers from BIG companies.People have no money any more.Lower prices or close factories.
