In all honesty, they were made out of BIC pens! I had bought a pack of 100 of them for school, and many of them were used for building this instrument. I have no idea as to what sort of plastic they were made from.

If you want to ask him a question, you should probably send a message. Because it seems he has had so many questions since last year that he is unable to reply to any of these comments. If you go to the last page of comments, odds are that he already answered the question you had in mind. I guess he ran tubing clamped with clothespins to the open end of each individual pen and on the other end of the tubing he merged the tubes into a bigger one that he could blow into.dnt giv me a thumb down plz

Guess what? I built one of these!, only to find out that i couldn't get a very clear sound, there was too much chiff. You need to understand some things: 1. Clothespins take at least ten times as much tension to push down than piano keys. 2. aquarium air line tubing works best, 3. the BIC pens should have the air blown across the bottom, not the top, 4. it isnt as easy as it looks, 5. the tubes must be glued to the board so the clothespin mechanism will work, and 6. this is very frustrating.

Is the air pushed through the mouthpiece, then is it distributed evenly to the bic pens? The air to the pens is closed off (somehow) by the clothespins, right?

how does the pen make the sound? how did you make the fipple for the whistle on each pen?

This is called a "portative" organ - small enough to carry around, and powered by a human. A calliope is when the organ is run by externally generated steam pressure from a boiler.

So you should change the name, but otherwise, awesome job.  Bic pens..?!
