Deanna Durbin always said she disliked the movies she made. I wish she could have realized the blessings and the uplifting joys her wonderful voice, beauty, and talent brought to so many--especially in such trying and suffering years of war.
It is impossible to be sad when listening to this beautiful and wonderfully talented and remarkable and heavenly sounding lady.
I appreciate you posting this song of hers. I printed it out and taped it to my bathroom wall by the bath tub and I sing it in the bath tub. It's a lovely song. She brings to life many of the songs she sings. You look on u tube and she does all of the the best.
Roberts smile so beautiful. I had a crush on him so bad when I was 10 LOL and Deanna well I always wanted to sing like her. Too bad romance is dead in America today :(
I discovered Deanna Durbin recently in a seniors course I took titled "Hollywood Sopranos'. I had just barely remembered her as a youngster and I just fell in love with her all over again - and still am. God bless Deanna Durbin as she approaches her 89th birthday. The Canadian - Hollywood songbird who retired much too soon.
Thank you soooo much! I am 80 and my sister is 85. We always wanted to "be" Deanna. I have put together a DVD for her as she doesn't have, or know anything about, computers but she can work her DVD player. She is ecstatic.
Thank You, so much. I am 78 years old now and as a little girl I used to watch all her movies. I also recognize Robert Stack in this film clip. Too bad she gave up the movies. Ann Blythe was also one of my favorites. I now watch Turner Classics and they play some of these old movies at times.
I played this song on the back porch on a warm spring day. The woods are right behind it, so there are dozens of large trees not far away. One of the lines of the song is I'll sing to the birds as they sing to me. I called to my wife to listen. As Deanna sang the trees came alive with birds joining in. It was so beautiful, like Snow White communing with the animals of the forest.
How sweeping and beautiful and innocent it is, when TRUE LOVE enters our hearts for the first time! More wondrous it is, when this takes place "late in life!"
All the more painful it becomes, when it is dashed through the cheap and vulgar behavior of the loved one, who turns out to be a vile serpent, filled with venom that contaminates the whole, and destroys the innocent beauty that was in the heart of the beguiled one!
This is great! I can just see Deanna Durbin as Rosalinda in "Die Fledermaus" - singing, dancing, acting her way across stage - interacting with the chorus in that second act. I sang chorus in two productions of that show and danced in one of them. In the other one, only a few couples danced and the rest of us just swayed back and forth. Boo! But it was fun. Bravo, Deanna Durbin!
It's absolutely Gorgeous! Such elegant times. Do you know that Strauss composed a ballet Cinderella near the end of his life? I posted a video of it's music. It's really gorgeous and rare, few people know about it. I will never know why.
man, girls were so pretty back then. The way they dressed and the was they spoke and sang. I just took my girlfriend to the senior Prom and it was the first time I'd ever seen her in a dress. back they girls wore gloves and hats and were ladies.
Today I heard her the first time in my life. She ist brilliant! I can´t image why I never heard of her before. Diese Leichtigkeit, mit der sie die hohen Töne erreicht. Incredible.
She is so wonderful. Kiri Te Kanawa was trained to copy the nice pure style and emulate Deanna's singing style. Kiri is one of the best sopranos around now. Also Renee Fleming used Kiri as a role model. She said so herself. Imagine, if there was no Deanna, this beautiful singing style would never have existed.
@freespiritQC I 'll tell how we went from a land of beauty and grace to one of despair , we threw God and the ten Commandments out of the schools and the courthouses not to mention our everyday lives , Now we have to except Gods Judgement's against us , we'll learn , those of us that will be left that is
She is so beautiful and angelic. I love her voice. That man that is enamored and quite taken with her is Robert Stack from Unsolved Mysteries (handsome huh) Beautiful.
She is like a spring lily singing towards the sun. Beautiful voice and personality. I believe if she became an actress over the long haul, Hollywood would degrade her. Good thing she retired. So very smart. Ah yes, these were the innocent times.
Many thanks. I wanted to sing this in a tribute to Hollywood sopranos recently, one of whom was Deanna Durbin, and watching this really helped. Would love to see her version of Nessun Dorma.

Just imagine if Deanna was young now. She would be the toast of Vienna in the New Year's Concert applauded by Daniel Barenboim.

I have a cd with the great Joan Sutherland singing this, as she loved Deanna Durbin, just as my own dear late mother did.

I saw "First Love" last night, and it was delightful! Ms. Durbin's rendition of this song is lovely.
And, wow, Robert Stack was so young!! He still hadn't developed that famous voice!
