  • The beginnings of true genius !

    thumb up

  • I think that's an 1836 Tele. Well, it's old!

  • Hey Robben and Larry, you're lucky he switched to acoustic guitar. And you know it.

  • Marty McFly)

  • technically perfect , decent cheese for the 80's ...his current accoustic playing is great , see PBS latest special in San Diego Balboa Theatre ....

  • This is SOOOO 90s down to the very threads of Tommy's red blazer. I'm not surprised this performance hasn't exactly aged well.

  • This literally blows my mind.

  • does any body know his gear set up for this performance?

  • Hey there,

Didn't mean that his performance is boring - just the opposite; he's too animated for my likes. But getting back to his playing; I still think players like him are so polished that they sound a bit mechanica,l and therefore, bore me. Just my opinion. But yeah; he's a brillaint player.

  • Good to the bone

  • Reminds me of Jazz Jackrabbit for some reason... Brilliant music.

  • great guitarist, but find his playing boring. standard and stock cliches. heard it all before.

  • @zenncatt you need to check out his acoustic stuff, or go see him live he is the complete opposite of a boring player, he is outstanding

  • sounds good.

  • I remember watching this "live" (on MTV) and thinking "WoW Robert Palmer sure can play guitar"....my bad

  • I didn't know that Jim Carrey played the guitar...

  • i hate kids commenting saying im 15 and i like this stuff, they act like they the only ones, i was born into this music, and so was most kids, not everyone likes rap, damn

  • paul gilbert should cover this

  • Dear GOD please remove lil waynes music from the face of the earth. OMG...!

  • Anybody else want that Tele as bad as me?

  • @FirstFiveFrets I would quite honestly remove my left ball for that tele...

  • @FirstFiveFrets yeah but he could play YOUR guitar or mine and sound just as good

  • @theanthill1001 Absolutely! I just happen to like that guitar. I didn't mean to imply that the guitar is what makes the player. You are absolutely right. The player is what makes any guitar sing.

  • I thinks this is marty mcfly or it is just me? :))))) lol

  • I'm a 3 year old kid and find todays music and programming abhorrent.

  • Excellent. Ca swingue un max!!

  • bass and drums groove so nice

  • Yeah, I remember when MTV used to have music on...

  • i love tommy, I think he's brilliant, but I'm sure this was a soundtrack to a porn film....

  • @icemanisdangerous haha i was about to say the same thing.I went to write that but you beat me to it..80s porn

  • @icemanisdangerous ahahahahah i have to say that in every porn movie there is good instrumental music! :D

  • @MrWorldpress I wouldn't know I always have the sound off.....

  • @icemanisdangerous What kind of porn do you watch?

  • @mashafasha5 Anything withyour mum in it.

  • @icemanisdangerous My mom is dead.

  • @mashafasha5 I'm a necrophilliac.

  • @icemanisdangerous That makes me sad ):

  • @mashafasha5 try shaggin a dead person, always cheers me up.

  • Any one know what year this is?

  • @lonestar7703 91 I think.

  • God I know he's a great guitar player and all but man does Tommy Emmanuel have the worst case of "Steve Vai Syndrome" *

*great musician that makes some really shitty music.

  • @Liamisamom HAh, Don't you think that that's a bit hars?. I mean he's way ahead of Vai in terms of writing in my books and I consider Vai a pretty decent writer too... It's just that their music is kinda... how do you put it... I don't know, I just like jazz more nowadays :DD

  • @junka22 kinda porny

  • love this song, just not the synth part.

  • Back the days when music was real > Now it's all autotuners and crap! I hate them, though i must admit i'm using one in one of my own recordings.. rofl but generally i hate them to death. 60's-early 90's = Real music, :) If we take the majority of modern musicians and take away their technology.. they will then be crap. thats where it used to be different, the musicians did the work, not the technology :)

  • @TobiasJetter there's a few good modern bands. like Civil Wars - Barton Hollow, or Cage the Elephant - Ain't No Rest for the Wicked

  • Haha he looks like Micheal j. Fox in this video

  • @vicRATTLEhead92 dude he always does in a sence :D

  • Saw this live yesterday. It was the first time Tommy performed on electric guitar with his band outside of Australia.. Damn the guy still kicks ass!!!

  • @Powerslider wow tommy still does electric??? gotta get myself up to date with tour dates here

  • @vzsozs yea it amazed me too.... he recently started his new tour where he combines his acoustic solo style with the addition of his band. AWESOME STUFF!!!

  • @vzsozs He really really does. I saw him recently in Bristol, England and the best bit by FAR was when he was on his electric with the whole band. It completely blew me away and I was already a big fan!

  • this song make me think of a 80's porno

  • You hang in there mushroomz88. You have a bright future ahead of you if you are thinking along those lines. Proud of you!

  • Great telecaster, awesome!

  • I remember when I was really into Tommy Emmanuel I went on audiogalaxy to find other albums I couldn't find in town here, and I found all these weird george benson sounding discs with his name on it and I thought it was someone else !!!

  • it's those 10 drunk persons again...

  • Good ole Robby on Bass!!

  • what are those 10 people on? must be the jacket they don't like???

  • the best ---->

  • wow tommy is a pretty decent electric guitarist and possibly the best acoustic guitarist. haha bastard

  • Comment removed

  • Tommy doing well, but nothing you don't hear from most of the rock-fusion groove-and-jam bands back then. His gifts in solo guitar performance are the most impressive.

  • I thought this was going to be early Tommy Emanuel with the long hair in the early eighties maybe with his brother, Poster must be young.

  • I like the camera on the headstock, classy.

  • worst suit ever and best guitar player ever

  • @TheReilly8 Awesome suit =)

  • @MrAxSAP lol i suppose it is pretty awsome

  • the camera on the headstock was a brilliant idea

  • Aaaah the 80's.. a time when America was its best in my opinion. M T.V. & the airwaves had all the variety. It was just one hell of a decade to live in! Great vid here!

  • @tubecat72 sorry but this is from 1991 :)

  • hows he getting the tone

  • @guitardrum321 God gave it to him..! :D

  • GREAT SKILLS!!!

  • nice finger cam!

  • this sounds like the theme tune of a 1980s cop drama, good though

  • EPIC!

  • holy crap the headstock cam! this is awesome. i love tommy, this is so 80's even though it was early 90s.

  • This whizz on the electric guitar morphed into the fingerpicking genius that we all know and love today...

Who would have credited it back in the 90's hearing him play like this...

    Peerless talent !!!

  • @Grockle1345 Dude he was fingerpickin at age 15 like a pro. There's a docco on him and his early life. Watch it theres a funny story about their Pincipal not believing that he could play the guitar and he busted out some chet atkins and the principal was so flabberghasted he started asking for lessons.

  • @Grockle1345 well that's a pretty cool thing about Decades, things don't really change until about 1 1/2 years after the start

A lot of 80's rock/metal bands were still dressing 80's style in early 90's until about half way through 91 when grunge reeeeeaaaallly took over

  • The best so far

  • Simply the best in the world

  • ha the only time you get music on Mtv is either between reality shows when they are rollin the credits and at 3:00 in the god damn morning.

  • Actully it is a little bit ironic that MTV don't play music anymore. I mean... If MTV stands for: "Music Television," then they should change their name to: RTV (Reality Television).

  • I've seen him perform live many times and got to jam with him once. A truly humbling experience. As an all 'round guitarist he is without peer

  • Tommy when he had the Micheal J Fox look going, but Fox never played guitar like this. Cant wait for the tour with the old band...bring it ON!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yessum, that hit the spot. Love the tone. I can't believe I didn't know Tim Robbins could shred like that dot dot dot

    and we was laughin

  • This man is absolutely wonderful! Music for body and soul! Yessss

  • I love Tommy I do. But that faux scissor kick at the end was just ugly... ha ha ha ha..!

  • Thank´s Gina^^

  • i reckon acoustic suits him better because there are many electric guitarists out there who are very skilled at blues and jazzy stuff as he's doing in this vid. on acoustic, this guy is a wizard, doing stuff that literally has never been heard of or seen before. but no matter what kinda guitar he has, he's a very gifted composer.

  • how did MTV go from this to 16 & pregnant in almost 2 decades?

  • It's disgusting, isn't it? I'm a 15 year old kid and find todays music and programming abhorrent.

  • @mushroomz88 You don't have live through music to find it good, or bad for that matter. 16 years old here, and I agree with you 100%.

  • @mushroomz88 I completely agree... theirs "some" exceptions , but they are quite a rare breed in todays popmusic culture...

Last week a friend of mine told me that : TE/Satch/Dire straits etc etc would all be gone/dead becouse "They are not in the hit charts , so they are not popular , and in 10 years they would be extinct"

    I Lol'd...

  • @mushroomz88 No matter what age, if you're a musician you know what's good and what's fake!!!

  • @tman916x You tell me. MTV is not worth watching anymore and I wish there would be old good music at least one or two nights a week... Or it doesn't have to be old, just good.

  • @BlueScrn I agree. I only watch it when I'm channel surfing and see South Park :P

  • @tman916x

I think because people are changing(in a bad way) and TV shows/programs/channels show what people want to see :-)

  • @tman916x because they need to dumb it down..

  • @santaslayer what a bunch of jagoff's!

  • @tman916x

So true. MTV is utter kid-drivel these days. and VH1 plays the same 25 songs from the late 80's all day.

  • @longbendy81 yea dude, it's sad.

  • @tman916x teenagers and marketing.

  • @tman916x

Because now Lady gaga is considered as music ;))

  • @tman916x

    hahaha

  • @tman916x eeh.... money for example ?

  • @petrovmarin well obviously. I wish there was a channel that'd showcase talent w/o selling out. Kinda like how candyrat brings light to all these new artists.

  • @tman916x that just shows you the generation we have today...

  • @wrona003 Hey!!! I'm part of that generation lol.

  • @tman916x so am I, but we are the best of both worlds

    ...lol

  • @tman916x Don`t know.....Every real music has left the channel, so why does they still call it MTV (Music TeleVision?) MTV of the 20th centry is crap. Still Tommy rocks and man he is a one man show of a kind

  • @tman916x

Yeah, it's incredible how MTV has improved in the last 2 decades !

  • @bleakcabal haha are you serious?

  • great feeling

  • How do you do the 3:19 thing?????

  • I think he's bending the high E string behind the nut, by pressing the string down towards the headstock between the tuning peg & the nut.

It also sounds like he's hitting a pinch harmonic with his picking hand as well.

  • it might be the natural harmonic at the fifth or seventh fret with the above the nut bend. thats a pretty neat trick if youve never tried it

    ;)

the G string's natural harmonic at 5 with a behind the nut bend can be very tasteful

  • It's a Fender Telecaster...

  • what kind of amp does he have here? It's probably a Fender but which model? And its also probably modded. Anyone knows any more information?

    Thanks!!!

  • This tune sounds very Steely Dan-ish!!

  • Is it possible to find that concert? where tommy is playing? the MTV special basemet tapes?

  • well all o theese songs are on his cd 'determination'

  • I know, but I wanted to find the concert.

  • does he sell tabs for this song or no shoes blues??

  • He played electric guitar before switching to acoustic

Perhaps, acoustic guitar is the true guitar to him?

  • i rekon acoustic suits him better

  • Undoubtedly the best and most versatile with the personality to match. That's a gig I would love to do.

  • I was just wondering who he is reminding me of...but damn yes you're so right "BuddhaMaster84" lol

  • this video is like watching michael j fox in back to future, but for real !

  • Actual quote :

"The greatest guitar player I've ever seen" - Eric Clapton

You oughta see him live! Even better!

  • was that referring to when Eric saw Tommy play electric or acoustic?

  • I would say early electric. Tommy used to do a lot of studio work with British groups in England in earlier years. He's shared the stage with Clapton, Les Paul and many others. Hell, I love ALL guitarists! If they hit your inner feelings then it doesn't matter who they are!

  • he's so fun to watch.......I can't help being happy no matter how bad the day has been.

  • He does a pinched harmonic

  • he plays the a natural harmonic on the 5th fret 3 rd string (G) and then he pushes the string down (towords the neck) after the nut near the tuners. Hope I helped :)

  • It's a natural harmonic and then he bends the string behind the nut as its ringing

  • it's a false harmonic

  • Hi archinkent, he is pushing down a string between the fretboard and the tuners( picking the string with that finger too of course.)

  • wat year is that tele, and wat the hell is that thing hanging off the neck???

  • "and wat the hell is that thing hanging off the neck???"

A cam :) no wireless back then I guess.

  • im pretty sure its the cable for the headstock camera

  • Were these rare songs ever put out on the air waves? Can you still get this in CD or buy the mp3? That was when we rapped up the eighties... when good music and skill was slowly taken off the air! With the exception of a few rock bands left, the rest of it is just ka ka! They should have a radio station that plays one decade of music per channel. 20's, 30's, 40's, and so on. I have to search for good stuff like this to transmit through my ipod.

  • they do, there is channels on sirius radio called like the 20s on 2 and 40s on 4

  • have you realised its hard to find a tommy emmanuel video with less than 5 stars?

  • Hahaha, off couse! That is because tommy is great!!

  • nice nice nice

  • lol no matter what he plays you can always hear that chet atkins influence XD Damn good guitarist

  • is he on a satriani level?

  • Comment removed

  • FAIL?!?! what ever...this is awesome

  • Tommy Emmanuel outranks every living guitar player today. I don't care who you name. He can do it all, with more taste than anyone. This is an old clip too.

  • Guthrie Govan.

  • guthrie is pretty awesome too. I'm sure TE could show guthrie a thing or two on guitar, though.

  • Of course :D

  • Absolutely loved it

  • Oh my God... Tommy on MTV, hell, those must've been the good ol' days, you could turn on the TV and watch clips from magicians like Satriani and Emmanuel... I hardly think today's average MTV watching kids could even comprehend music such as this...

  • fenderbender92 he's a legend from Australia and in 2008 readers of Guitar Player magazine named Tommy as the "Best Acoustic Guitarist".

  • g'day fenderbender92. where you from. tommy is a aussie. he is a legend here.

  • i just love from 1:37 to 2:05

  • Why havent I heard of this guy before?

    He's AMAZING!

  • Comment removed

  • talk about feel..Tommy has it in spades..

he reminds mea bit of Jeff Beck when he plays his tele..you can hear it in hus licks.

Tommy,Jeff beck, & Duane Allman three of the best most soulful players..

  • Acoustic or electric Tommy is just GREAT! What a player!

  • It's not an easy life, being tommies guitars.

You do your best but get your ass kicked as thnx.:-p

  • Watch me for the changes, and try to keep up.

  • how the hell did he change his clothes so fast??
