No, your iPhone must be jailbroken. And, as far as I know, it's in the default repositories. Just search for "GV Mobile" without the quotation marks and there you go!

yes google voice uses ONLY data, so basically you could have like 450 min no texting and no calling and u could send texts and make calls completely free of charge if you used GV (not the default programs unless somehow it would change the default programs to use the default sms program but i wouldnt try it)

Google Voice is how I do 99% of my texting now. I can do it from the phone or the GV website.

It can't do MMS (pics, video, etc), but does regular text w/o a problem.

Ok, I am signed up with GV mobile (Google voice) and I downloaded the GV app on my iphone. But, when I dial a number, I get a message saying that GV can't call the number that was dialed to my iphone. I don't understand this. When I dial a number, it looks like it's making the call, then stops and sits there. How can I make a simple call on GV mobile?

sorry i was incorrect on the voice part you have to have a unlimited calling to a certain number or unlimited incoming calls plan but the sms should still be data based

I think the key was that you can make calls for your iPhone or ***iPod Touch.*** That's huge. Except for lack of a cell network, that would bring the Touch on par with the iPhone -- without any of AT&T's fees.

So from what I'm getting so far about this GV Mobile app, you have to be connected to WiFi or on the EDGE or 3G network.. If you're at home it's good, but if you don't have a data plan its pointless when you're out.

Yes that's correct, but that's a given since how is any application that utilize networking suppose to work without 3G/Edge/WiFi. Also you need a MyFaves plan from T-mobile or any carrier w/ a free incoming calls plan for GV Mobile to work for you for free. You could set up a cheap data/regular plan w/ no txting and w/ the cheapest/lowest minutes available. Since calls and txting will be free with GV Mobile.

@Supraman353 only if your using an ipod touch. if you have an iphone with a data plan then it'll work, the point is.. if you have an iphone and get the cheapest plan with no texting and web, you can easily get GV Mobile and have texting/web for free basically

At first it did not make sense cause i tought that by adding google # to my faves its still like paying for faves plan, so whats free? nothing, but i figured that by adding the google number to my faves than i could call anybody therefore saving my plan minutes. It may be an advantage for some people, i personally have skype and use it over edge, well i do pay $7 quaterly for skype. I dont have faves. So gvmobile might not work for me. should i add faves? would sms work without faves?

If you have T-Mobile fave 5 plan you can add your Google Voice number to your fav and talk for free all you want...

That's true, unless you're a heavy caller and texter like me, who could only afford the cheapest plan from your carrier. I have an iPhone and AShiT&T charges me about $130/month with my plan. So once my contract ended, I jailbroke and unlocked my iPhone and put a T-Mobile sim inside w/ an individual myFaves plan w/ unlimited web which cost $50/month. I can make unlimited texts and calls w/ GV Mobile even though my plan only permits 300mins/month w/ no txting. From $130/m to $50/m. Epic win.

What phone do you have? GV Mobile app only works on smartphones: iphone/androids/blackberries. I recently bought a T-Mobile myTouch (android). Plan details: myFaves 300 + myTouch Unlimited Web.

@7SnakeEyes7 I did the same, I have a pay as you go from T-Mobile and use Whistlephone for free phone (via wifi) to land line calls. The downside is that you've got to listen to a little ad before it connects you to the number so for lots of short quick calls this may not work but if I'm gong to be chatting to a buddy for half an hour who cares and its FREE as in free beer and free love!!

Apple probably rejected it because they are up the telco arse. I think they will all have an answer for future voip use etc. Just look at the credit card companies and what they do, up the rates. look how long it has taken nokia to try to release the 97 with skype/contact integration. They are trying to change the game, but the telcos and government are putting the kabosh on it.

It is so absurd, why not have the government just investigate why DELL, SONY, HP, etc. computers don't have shelf space in Apple Stores? I wonder why Apple doesn't put Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile ads with Blackberrys and the countless other smart phones up on their iPhone web pages? I think the government should look into that also.

You CAN make calls using WIFI or 3G, I am doing it right now on my HTC FUZE and Iphone3GS. You need to get a Gizmo5 account (free) and Fring (for mobile device). Have Google Voice foward to your Gizmo5 account (In google voice: Add a new phone->Phone Type: Gizmo). Then Use Fring with Gizmo5 settings on your mobile phone to *RECIEVE* calls via WIFI. To place a *OUTGOING* call use your Mobile Web Broswer to login to GV to enter your number you want to call.

NOW ENJOY UNLIMITED MINUTES!

so cool!! the only thing that i dont like is the texting. if someone relpys to your text that you sent with GV, the message will arive in your message thing, so if you reply to their reply, your number wont show up right? then it wont match your number on your friends phone book right??

If someone replies to your text message AND if one of your forwarding numbers setup and enabled on Google Voice is a cell phone, then it will go to your cell phone (their reply will show up under a 406-xxx-xxxx number). You can reply via your cell phone to this number and it will appear to them as you replying from your Googel Voice #.
