young modern made them a pop group instead of a rock band. diorama had its 'eye-rolling' moments like 'luv ur life' but it also balanced it with 'one way mule' and 'lever'. young modern is an album where every song is luv ur life. and i think it was forced upon the band by daniel johns voice losing its rasp completely. he cannot sing rock anymore, it seems to be physically impossible. u kno how he leaves out the 'get up' part of emotion sickness now, or just whispers it? i doubt its by choice

BUT- he's been leaving the "get up" part out of emotion sickness for a LONG time, long before his voice changed so drastically. and he can still sing rock perfectly well. watch vids of the lever, israel's son, or anything they still do and it sounds great, very reminiscent of his old voice.
with YM i think he just wrote what suited his mood and voice.

@butterflycaught900 hmm, I'm not sure. I still see them as evolving in their personal tastes and taking bigger risks with doing something different. I know that his voice has changed significantly. Some songs he can sing better than others, but you gotta see it from an artistic point of view. There are probably songs that Silverchair's played so many times that they got kinda sick of it. I think he can still sing rock, but that it might be a more conscious choice to do something different.

It is a bit less daring than Diorama, but it might've just been the album that they really wanted to make, I suppose. I'm not sure about this stuff since I haven't listened to this album a whole lot lately. If anything, I'm getting ready for their next album, a new Stone Temple Pilots album instead.
@spscotto daniel covered that ground with the dissociatives. i'd hoped he'd gotten it out of his system. guess not. and i heard him recently saying the new album would only have about 4 songs with guitar!?! i was like, um, i cant even think of 4 songs on young modern with guitar o_O. so apparently he's found a way to make the next album even softer than YM... sigh...

I only recently got into this band, and on a music level, both albums young modern and diorama are clearly the best albums they've created, from frogstomp to neon ballroom are great albums for a grunge genre, but musically the last two are more universally appreciated. Glad some musicians have some balls to actually go against some established fanbase and play what they want to play, shows character
So they changed. Sometimes I wish they'd rock out more, but I appreciate them trying something new. How many of you enjoy a wider variety of music in 2007 then you did in 1995 or whenever Frogstomp came out? Leave them alone.

But, the more that I listened to them the more I loved them. Maybe I have a bias because they are my favorite band but I just think that people are too quick to judge them. As for the Nirvana comparisons, anyone who has listened to anything from Neon Ballroom on would know that they are much more inventive and musical than Nirvana ever was. I understand that people grow and change. I'm the first person to defend newer Metallica material whenever anyone puts it down with the same argument. I think it was just a little hard to swallow at first, but it sounds way better the second time listening to it... The album is well written musically. It's interesting, but too soft for me personally compared to the old stuff. Most silverchair fans will agree it was a stretch to like Diorama, but most eventually did. This is much more of a stretch. Guitars feature almost no distortion and where's the solos? Much of the lyrics seem thrown together too. There's a few gems, but most of it is boring.

Silverchair are the awesome. Further then the great tunes, in silverchair's albums you can see a definate growth, it evolves, steps out of the box and takes you on a journey and even if it's not exactly where you'd like them to go it's always enjoyable.

i like the song's beginning, but it sounds like the killers to me. overall, it's an ok tune, but what's going on is he's mixed in the dissociatives with his own original band. like on tool's lateralus. parts of apc's sound got mixed into the album. not a good thing to me.

i'm not a fan of them anymore but i wanted to express myself as an old listener of them... how much i was disappointed by their work in nowadays.
i mentioned the nipples just because i was so upset that they were with me during my teenage period and now they do pop songs (yes sir, pop songs).
compare frogstomp to whatever they have today and you'll see.

Believe me, I loved it too. Nowadays I see it as growth on their part to write pop material. You can only be angry for so many years before someone calls bullshit on your schtick, and I can really only see it as an evolution to their sound.

what do you think about my theory that they were forced to change to pure pop because daniels voice has totally lost its rasp so he is physically unable to sing rock now? whenever u hear him do 'freak' the last couple years he yells but theres no gravel at all in it. he just sings louder in an attempt to make it rocky. i cant imagine him being able to pull off 'one way mule' anymore

@butterflycaught900 hmm, I'm not sure. I still see them as evolving in their personal tastes and taking bigger risks with doing something different. I know that his voice has changed significantly. Some songs he can sing better than others, but you gotta see it from an artistic point of view. There are probably songs that Silverchair's played so many times that they got kinda sick of it. I think he can still sing rock, but that it might be a more conscious choice to do something different.

It is a bit less daring than Diorama, but it might've just been the album that they really wanted to make, I suppose. I'm not sure about this stuff since I haven't listened to this album a whole lot lately. If anything, I'm getting ready for their next album, a new Stone Temple Pilots album instead.

I only recently got into this band, and on a music level, both albums young modern and diorama are clearly the best albums they've created, from frogstomp to neon ballroom are great albums for a grunge genre, but musically the last two are more universally appreciated. Glad some musicians have some balls to actually go against some established fanbase and play what they want to play, shows character

More attitude?? Obviously you havent listened to Young Modern or Diorama more than once. I'll admit that after hearing both albums for the first time i didnt know what to think. But, the more that I listened to them the more I loved them. Maybe I have a bias because they are my favorite band but I just think that people are too quick to judge them. Yes Silverchair has changed, but its for the better.

It's amazing that there are so many bitter fans lingering around waiting for them to go back to grunge. Of five albums, only the first two were grunge. It doesn't look likely, does it people? As for the Nirvana comparisons, anyone who has listened to anything from Neon Ballroom on would know that they are much more inventive and musical than Nirvana ever was. Their songs are complex orchestrations that convey a deep love of music as opposed to the deep resentment for life conveyed by Cobain's.

I understand that people grow and change. I'm the first person to defend newer Metallica material whenever anyone puts it down with the same argument. I think it was just a little hard to swallow at first, but it sounds way better the second time listening to it... Like I said, I respect SilverChair, saying that the album "sucked" probably wasn't the best choice of words after my initial reaction.

The album is well written musically. It's interesting, but too soft for me personally compared to the old stuff. Most silverchair fans will agree it was a stretch to like Diorama, but most eventually did. This is much more of a stretch. Guitars feature almost no distortion and where's the solos? Much of the lyrics seem thrown together too. There's a few gems, but most of it is boring.

this is one of my fave new songs...they're all wicked...i can't wait to see them in toronto with only 400 ppl...its gonna be insane...they've evolved so much since frogstomp and i just love listening to the records from frogstomp to diorama...and just hear the changes...its amazing...daniel is a geninus when it comes to music

i like the song's beginning, but it sounds like the killers to me. overall, it's an ok tune, but what's going on is he's mixed in the dissociatives with his own original band. like on tool's lateralus. parts of apc's sound got mixed into the album. not a good thing to me.

daniel knows exactly what hes doing.
every album has evolved, every tour ive seen them on has been unreal, and i live in england. From a tiny room playing tomorrow to sheperds bush empire and diormama!
just enjoy it, we all love them and the anticipation of each album/tour etc just personifies that!

Yeah he sure is heading to the homo territory that is for sure. He is starting to suck more and more at least Elton John doesn't suck as bad as Daniel and Paul Mac do. hahahahaha
